With around 10 million inhabitants, it's one of the world's oldest nations, being independent since 1143. Fruit of all its history, Portugal is a country of many singularities molded by Roman, Visigothic and Suevian, Arabian, African influences as well as a whole world that it aimed discover in the XV century. It was in this unique period of it's history, when it "gave world to the world" that the Portuguese sailors travelled through Africa's western and eastern coasts setting sea routes to India, Brazil, China and Japan, making Portuguese one of the most spoken languages and the Portuguese people the most open to new cultures and civilizations. Member of the European Union since 1986, today Portugal is a modern country, gifted with good infrastructures and good connections to all the other European countries, offering itself as an ideal entrance door to Europe. Simultaneously it keeps investing and adding value its wide artistic and archeological patrimony. With a rich gastronomy and a thriving cultural life, Portugal is the testimony of its long history. 25 Portugal, a meeting point for many faraway cultures keeps its own identity as a hospitable country, pacific and pleasant! Welcome to Portugal! Location Located in the extreme southwest point of Europe, it is surrounded by an extensive coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, limited at the north and east by Spain, and at west and south by the Atlantic Ocean. The territory of Portugal includes the Azores and Madeira islands. Climate Portugal is one of the European countries with a warmer climate, with average daytime temperatures between 5ºC and 15ºC in the winter and between 25ºC and 35ºC in the summer. Summers are mild in the highlands of the north and in the coastal region of the far north and center. Autumns and winters are typically windy, rainy and cool, being colder in the northern districts and central provinces, where freezing temperatures occur during the colder months. 26 The North records the highest rainfall and the lowest average and annual temperatures but it is in the interior region that the larger temperature ranges take place. South of Tagus River, it is possible to feel the Mediterranean influences, with very hot summers and short winters and little rainfall. Madeira Island has a Mediterranean-type climate with mild and pleasant temperatures throughout the year, while the Azores have a temperate maritime climate with abundant rainfall. Language The official language is Portuguese. Religion Portuguese Constitution emphasizes freedom of expression, religion and conscience. Churches and religious communities are separate and independent from the State. For historical reasons, which exist since foundation of Portuguese nationality, the Catholic Church plays a central role. Currency Portugal’s currency is the Euro. From January 1st, 1999, Portugal, and another 10 State Member of the European Union (Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Finland and Ireland), adopted a single currency – the Euro, which came into circulation on January 1st 2002 and whose symbol is €. 27 ABOUT LEIRIA Centuries of history and memory LEIRIA This region, where the sea is always present, is considered particularly interesting to live, study and work, not only for the quality of the economical and material resources, but also for the richness and beauty of natural and cultural, resources a characteristic of the region. Leiria is the capital of the regional district, hosts the IPLeiria headquarters and three of its schools: the School of Education and Social Sciences (ESECS), the School of Technology and Management (ESTG) and the School of Health Sciences (ESSLei). It is a small city and where you can find the old and the new and a very good cultural tradition, hand in hand with a safe environment and a very good quality of life guarded by its beautiful castle, with leisure areas to walk and enjoy along the Lis river bank, cinemas and cultural spaces. In the historical center, besides finding the traditional shops you can go to cafes and bars, terraces and other places of interest. In the evening, which is always lively, especially in the Rodrigues Lobo Square (Praça Rodrigues Lobo), you will find many IPLeiria students given that in the city, about 11,500 students are studying and living there. The region of Leiria and West is rich in historical and cultural heritage. There we can find two of the most beautiful Portuguese monuments – the Batalha Monastery and Alcobaça Monastery – classified by UNESCO as World Heritage. These two historical and artistic treasures, of Gothic-style, symbolize great moments in the history of Portugal and therefore do not exempt a visit. The first, whose construction was ordered by 28 King D. João I, in honor of the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, in 1385, and the second, a repository of the vast and centuries-old presence of Cistercian monks, where the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro lie, who represents the most beautiful love story of Portuguese kings. The nearby castles of Leiria, Ourém and Porto de Mós, medieval and haughty, carry out centuries of history and memory. The Fatima Shrine, located 20 minutes away from Leiria, is a place of reference that annually receives over five million pilgrims, being one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in the world. There are many places of interest that you must visit and learn about! West Region Ride the wave! The beauty of the sea and the nature are perhaps the most beautiful things we have in this coastal region. A few miles from Leiria, along the coast, the beaches follow one another: more than a dozen. There are many attractive places during the summer and not only, for sunbathing, strolling by the sea or ride a bicycle on the bike path along the Atlantic Road, just in the middle of the pine forest. Nazaré is the most typical beach, composed of narrow and winding streets among the white houses, and which go up to the very blue sea with outstanding waves. For that reason Nazaré has developed a project called The North Canyon Project to make the most of Nazaré sea potentialities, which are exclusive for being under the impact of the Canyon of Nazaré, a geomorphological undersea characteristic that powers such remarkable waves. Then there are many others: S. Pedro de Moel is a very beautiful and serene beach, where there is a perfect symbiosis between the preservation of the natural environment and the harmony of the houses; further north, you can find Pedrógão beach, known for its extensive sand pit that allows the realization of numerous sports events in summer; S. Martinho do Porto, in the municipality of Alcobaça, has a magnificent bay, and, further south, Foz do Arelho (Caldas da Rainha) or Supertubos (Peniche), with ideal 29 conditions to practice various water sports such as fishing, diving, sailing, rowing, jet skiing, surfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. If you enjoy camping with friends, you can find lots of suitable places in the region. Nazaré, for instance, where IPLeiria has a leisure park. There is also the Pinhal de Leiria, whose plantation was ordered by King D. Dinis, in the late thirteenth century, a region’s natural reference, a place of leisure and pleasure, right near the coast. Besides the beaches, we still have, in this region, the presence of the mountain, where we feel the purity of the air and where you may feel compelled to walk, contemplate the landscape or even practice more radical activities. In the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros, inhabited by protected species and dominated by limestone, there is a world of things to do outdoors. And below us, towards the deep underground, some of the most spectacular caves in Portugal, truly amazing geologically sculpted stone monuments. A visit not to be missed!
