ELEPHANT CAMPS
For centuries, timber elephants played a crucial role
in northern Thailand's economy.
The Thai
government banned commercial logging in 1989, but
the skills of these huge yet graceful animals are still
displayed at tourist-oriented elephant camps
scattered around the province.
Pang Mae Sa, about 15 miles northwest of town, is
the closest and most commercial - operation (call 6653-297-060).
Chiang Dao Elephant Training Centre, 35 miles
north of Chiang Mai on Highway 107, the mahouts
and their charges demonstrate more traditional forest
talents (call 66-53-298-553).
You can also clamber atop a howdah,
or elephant saddle, for a rumble through
the jungle.

Mae Sa Waterfall : The spectacular eight tiered waterfall occupies a natural setting

spot for locals and tourists alike.

is the location for our zipline adventure, which is less than one hours' drive
from Chiang Mai's city center.

WHITE WATER RAFTING
Northern Thailand is the perfect location for exciting
whitewater. With its warm, tropical weather, steep mountains,
and beautiful scenery, the Mae Taeng is the nexus of fun in
northern Thailand.
Rafting down the Mae tang river is offered by several companies
and can often be combined with elephant riding or mountain
biking. During the dry season (Jan-Feb) water levels are
relatively low with only grade 2-3 rapids, but during the rainy
season (Jun-Oct) higher water levels make for a more exciting
grade 4-5 trip.

WAT PHRATHAT DOI SUTHEP
Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep
The quintessential image of Chiang Mai with its
large gold-plated chedi, visible from the city on a
clear day.
It was founded in 1386 under miraculous
circumstances. It crowns the Doi Suthep mountain
on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai.

WAT PHRA SINGH
Wat Phra Singh (Temple of the Lion Buddha) is an important Buddhist
monastery and temple on the west side of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Founded in the
14th century, it houses two medieval Buddha statues.

HILL TRIBE VILLAGES
Long Neck Karen or Padong, the village of women in their long neck represent
the beauty among the unspoiled nature. Lahu Shi Balah or yellow Lahu, women of

WIANG KUM KAM
Wiang Kum Kam (wiang goom garm) was a settlement long before it became King
Mangrai s capitial around 1287-90. Frequent flooding caused Mangrai to move, but
the place remained important throughout the Lanna period. The site was later
buried under mud when the river changed course during the Burmese period. The
area was restored as a historical park during the 1980's.

UMBRELLA FESTIVAL
This festival is usually held in the 3rd week of January in the village of Bo Sang
where hundreds of pretty local girls hold umbrellas in a very colorful parade
and beauty pageant. It origins are purely cultural and is as much for the local
people as it is for visitors. Over the years the tiny village has become
synonymous with umbrella making and is now a well known tourist attraction
in itself.

FLOWER CARNIVAL
Dazzling colour in this celebration of flowers. A gentle festival with a parade of
intricately arranged flower floats, a beauty contest, flower displays, gardening

SONGKRAN FESTIVAL

Visakha Bucha is the most important religious holiday in the Buddhist calendar.
Walk Up Doi Suthep Tradition is a pilgrimage up the local mountain to the west of
Chiang Mai. This walk up Doi Suthep takes place the night before Visakha Bucha
Day. It is believed that anyone who participates in the walk up to Wat Phrathart Doi
Suthep, and does the vien tiane, or walking around the Grand Stupa for three
rounds on Visakha Bucha Day, will receive the results of making merit: virtue, luck,
and prosperity.

LOY KRATONG FESTIVAL
Loy Kratong Festival , Chiang Mai is one of the prime sites to celebrate by lit
up above thousands 'khom loy' (floating lanterns) of drift into the night sky.

mother), and their cub born on 27 May, the Snow Dome also features a separate

stalls selling all kinds of items and you may want to bargain for the price.

Saturday Market is open every Saturday from 4pm till
midnight. For the sheer volume and variety of goods on
display the Saturday Market easily matches the more well
known Sunday Market and the Night Bazaar. Wui Lai
Road is full of Silversmith shops to visit and there are
plenty of silverware and aluminum sculptures on
display.
Sunday Market is a real showcase of the art and
craftsmanship of Northern Thailand. Many of the
stallholders have personally made the items they sell and
the many hand crafted objects are a testimony to the
skills and inventiveness of local people.

BORSANG UMBRELLA VILLAGE
Borsang is known throughout Thailand as the Umbrella Village . It is famed for
handmade parasols made from bamboo and rice paper. The village has made
umbrellas for generations and the art has been handed down through a small
number of families that live here and is said to have originated from a Thai
Buddhist monk who learned the practice on a pilgrimage to Burma.

Ban Tawai is wooden furniture manufacturing to suit all tastes and styles from the

shipping agents around Ban Tawai that can make arrangements for you but please
be careful to check import regulations.
