North West or 51 minutes NATURE & ADVENTURE WHITE WATER RAFTING Northern Thailand is the perfect location for exciting whitewater. With its warm, tropical weather, steep mountains, and beautiful scenery, the Mae Taeng is the nexus of fun in northern Thailand. Rafting down the Mae tang river is offered by several companies and can often be combined with elephant riding or mountain biking. During the dry season (Jan-Feb) water levels are relatively low with only grade 2-3 rapids, but during the rainy season (Jun-Oct) higher water levels make for a more exciting grade 4-5 trip. North or about 60 minutes CULTURE & HISTORY WAT PHRATHAT DOI SUTHEP Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep The quintessential image of Chiang Mai with its large gold-plated chedi, visible from the city on a clear day. It was founded in 1386 under miraculous circumstances. It crowns the Doi Suthep mountain on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai. CULTURE & HISTORY WIANG KUM KAM Wiang Kum Kam (wiang goom garm) was a settlement long before it became King Mangrai s capitial around 1287-90. Frequent flooding caused Mangrai to move, but the place remained important throughout the Lanna period. The site was later buried under mud when the river changed course during the Burmese period. The area was restored as a historical park during the 1980's. Over the years the tiny village has become synonymous with umbrella making and is now a well known tourist attraction in itself.
