HELSINKI CUP 11.-16.7.2016 Tervetuloa! • Välkommen! • Welcome! • Bienvenue! • Bem-vindo! • добро пожаловать WELCOME TO HELSINKI CUP 2016! Helsinki Cup has been organised since 1976, and next year will be its 41st time. Finland’s most well-known and international junior football tournament will be played again from 11 to 16 July 2016. Helsinki Cup has successfully upheld its original principles and ideology since its start. We wanted an international boys and girls football tournament in Helsinki which would involve the whole city, and we succeeded in doing so. Over the years, some of the brightest upcoming Finnish sports stars have played in Helsinki Cup, such as Jari Litmanen, Sami Hyypiä, Roman Eremenko, Laura Österberg Kalmari, Teemu Selänne and Petteri Koponen. The internationality of Helsinki Cup was on the forefront again last summer when there were teams from 11 different countries participating in the tournament. Several upcoming international stars have also played in Helsinki Cup over the years, such as Ze Roberto, Julio Baptista and Luis Cristaldo. It was an interesting coincidence that Rafael Benitez, the coach for the Real Madrid boys A team in Helsinki in 1991, was selected as the new head coach of the Real Madrid first team at the beginning of June. There was a record number of teams that participated in 2015. The pitches throughout the city of Helsinki were filled with 1,240 different participating teams, playing over 4,000 matches. The city of Helsinki offers the tournament exceptionally well-kept pitches. Last summer, Helsinki Cup was played on 18 different pitch areas, and there were approximately 90 pitches in all. Moreover, accommodations for Helsinki Cup are located in central locations close to the pitches and they are easily accessible by public transport. The centre of the tournament is Töölö, where a new Cumulus hotel will be built next year. At the heart of the tournament’s downtime activities beats the Helsinki Cup event market, Love the Ball Center, which is full of different events, partner displays, competitions and presentations. Helsinki Cup will continue to put emphasis on internationality as well as the girls’ series, without, of course, forgetting the boys. Helsinki Cup warmly welcomes all Finnish and international boys and girls teams to come to Helsinki again in the summer of 2016!
