When and why did you decide to be an entrepreneur? The desire to have more autonomy and control over my career became strong. I strategically prepared my transition to Xperience Leadership, LLC over a couple of years by re-tooling my skills at every opportunity. My experience in the corporate world provided a strong foundation for understanding business, finance, risk and operations, which became part of the process in ensuring my success. How has the Small Business Center assisted you? I have taken several seminars at the Small Business Center, such as “Getting the Word Out About Your Business” and “Why Businesses Fail.” These seminars were critical and helped me transition my business. As my business grew, I attended more in-depth courses. What is the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? Owning my own business is rewarding, but it is not without challenges. Prioritization is a daily consideration. I constantly balance how, when and where to expend my resources so I can maximize my time, money and energy. Carole Isom-Barnes, Ph.D., owner | Xperience Leadership, LLC The Pitch Xperience Leadership, LLC consults with companies in the midst of systemic change. We focus on people and process improvements, via analysis, risk mitigation, operations management, human resource management and training. We improve efficiency and create sustainable operations for our clients. When you launched your venture, how did you get your seed funding? I maintained my employment while transitioning full time to Xperience Leadership, LLC. Since my transition was planned over a couple of years, I was able to secure a few clients in various industries. Doing so enabled me to secure the funding needed to appropriately kickoff the business. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs? Make sure you have a plan. Educate yourself in the industry you are interested in and then find mentors who can guide you and connect you with the right people to get your feet off the ground.
