Students’ Union Briefing Paper: Feeding back and raising the profile of your Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC)

Why is it important to feedback?

One of the most important roles of an academic representative is to feedback to students. Feeding back ensures the student body feels involved in the decisions being made, and encourages them to raise issues with their academic rep.

Talk to your peers about your SSLC. There will be students who have never heard of an SSLC and its purpose. Ensure they know you are their representative, and that you can raise any issues for them at the next meeting.

It is essential that you give feedback to students about what is discussed at your SSLC, as well as any developments or resolutions that have come about as a result of gathering student opinion. If students raise issues with you and do not see what steps have been taken, they will lose interest and not see any point in continuing to raise things. You should inform students of the response you receive from your SSLC, whether it is positive or negative.

Who should you be feeding back to?

Your peers: If you have raised an issue or piece of feedback on behalf of your peers/classmates, ensure you let them know what happened as a result. Keeping your classmates informed will make them to feel involved, and listened to, and they’ll be more likely to raise other issues with you.

The Students’ Union: It is very useful for us to know what impact you are having within your department. Whether your achievements are big or small, they should be fed back to us. If you are experiencing issues which are not being taken seriously by your department or faculty, feed this back to us.

It is also useful for us to know how we are doing. If you have any general feedback about the academic representation system, from the elections, to meetings, to the awards, let us know at academicreps@bath.ac.uk

!

Other Reps : Feeding back to other reps is important for a number of reasons. If reps in other departments are experiencing similar issues, your experience of an issue and how it is resolved could be beneficial to them when approaching their SSLC. Similarly, the sharing of good practice and things that have worked well have should be fed back to your fellow representatives. An ideal place to do this is at Faculty Forum or Academic Council.

You can also use the Academic Reps 2015/16 Facebook page to discuss issues with reps from other departments/faculties. These could be issues highlighted to you by your classmates, or the continuation of discussions had at Faculty Forum or Academic Council. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1654360774824097/

How can I effectively feedback?

Lecture shout outs: An inexpensive and time efficient way to feedback . Make sure you ask permission from your tutor first

Social Media: Probably the easiest way to feedback. Use a variety of platforms to try and reach out.

However, remember that not everyone uses social media!

Moodle: Some SSLCs have their own Moodle courses which hold all the necessary information regarding SSLC meetings. Sending out messages via Moodle will reach anyone enrolled onto that course, your classmates. Your classmates will also be able to keep up-to-date with past minutes and what is coming up on the agenda. Talk to your department about setting one up!

Email: A failsafe way to get the message out. All students have a University of Bath email address so you can be sure that your feedback reaches all who you represent. You can access your cohorts mailing list via the ‘Controls’ option on bathstudent. You must be logged in to do so.

Video: A short concise video update is an effective way to feedback to your cohort. It is engaging, accessible to all, and can be circulated via email or uploaded onto your Moodle or Facebook page.

Rep Feedback Form: Let the Students’ Union know your achievements by using the Rep Feedback

Form. We use this information to measure the impact reps have within their departments, and to monitor changes no matter how small. Wins fed back to us using this method will be showcased on bathstudent, Facebook and Twitter each month. http://www.bathstudent.com/education/rep-resources/

Academic Representatives’ Newsletter: Get in touch if you would like to be to focus of our ‘Spotlight on…’ section in the newsletter. We are looking for 1-2 reps to showcase their hard work and achievements in each issue. Send us an email if you’d like to be included.

Departmental Newsletters: At the end of every semester, we will be compiling departmental newsletters to update students in your departments on Students’ Union activities. These include representation activity, societies, peer support, Top Ten and campaign updates. To get involved with these, and to have your achievements included, contact academicreps@bath.ac.uk

When should I be feeding back?

Feedback should be timely. Ensure you inform students of the outcome of an SSLC meeting in the days following. Minutes of the meeting can vary in their completion time, so it is important to write a short summary which can be circulated to your cohort shortly after the meeting. Minutes can then be circulated once confirmed.

It may also be useful to ensure that, at the beginning of each academic year, changes made as a result of issues raised by student reps in the previous year are summarised and made available.
