PC APPROVED: 2-20-08 VENTURA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: TRANSPORTATION UTILITY WORKER-BUS DRIVER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, transport students to and from school, on field trips, and to/from other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of student passengers while riding in a school bus. As a relief Bus Driver must drive all types and sizes of district school buses on conflicting fieldtrips or when substituting for regularly assigned school bus drivers; inspect, wash, clean, fuel and service District buses and other vehicles and equipment, repair or replace upholstery, window glass, and tires; assist mechanics in routine maintenance and mechanical repair work; order and stock parts; maintain files and inputs data into transportation data management system. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedules. This job class functions at a journey level of classification. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Drive a school bus along designated routes; pick up and discharge students in accordance with established time lines; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations. Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel; assure student understanding of bus rules; issue citations as needed. Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; check brakes, lights, doors, mirrors and other equipment; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as needed. Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; clean and wash bus windows, mirrors, interior and exterior; perform minor repairs on seats and other equipment; check and maintain appropriate fuel, oil, water and tire compression levels; replenish fluids and inflate tires as needed. Meet scheduled departure and arrival times; adjust routes in response to road closures as necessary; assist students with crossing streets. Transport students and faculty on field trips, sports events or other special activities to various locations along designated routes as assigned. Maintain various records and logs related to inspections, mileage, maintenance and assigned activities. Attend and participate in various meetings, in-services and trainings as assigned. Replace window glass, headlights and mirrors; replace and secure seats; replace flooring materials in school buses; perform upholstery repairs and installations and patch seats; repair or replace ripped or damaged seams. Maintain and replenish brake, steering, radiator, transmission and other fluid levels as needed. Inspect, repair, change and balance tires; replace, wash, fill and charge batteries; tighten or adjust various parts. Perform routine safety checks on buses and other vehicles and equipment, report major problems to appropriate authority. Wash and clean windshields, buses and other District vehicles and equipment. Assist mechanics in routine mechanical repair and maintenance work as required. Maintain and cleans shop tools and equipment and keeps transportation facilities clean, neat, and orderly; maintain and update vehicle maintenance records. Inputs data into data management system; prints and files department records, reports, invoices and paperwork. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Typically, this would be gained through: graduation from high school and one year experience performing servicing and minor maintenance and repairs on vehicles. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class B commercial driver’s license with passenger, school bus and air brake endorsements. Valid California Special Driver Certificate. Valid First Aid Certification issued by an authorized agency. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Vehicle repair shop, School bus and outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
