This unit standard is intended for people who require basic
calculation skills for use in a workplace.
People credited with this unit standard are able to perform
calculations for a specified workplace.

Explanatory notes
1
Assessment can occur in a workplace, or in a training or educational establishment,
provided that each calculation:
 has a purpose and complexity realistic and relevant to the specified workplace, and
 meets the specified workplace’s requirements and/or industry standards for
accuracy and timeliness.
Calculators may be used if their use is generally acceptable in the specified
workplace.

Definitions
Accuracy means all calculations must be correct. Where any calculations are
incorrect, new calculations must be attempted by the candidate.
Timeliness refers to industry expectations for the performance of the calculation in
the specified workplace.
Workplace refers to a place of paid or voluntary employment.
Workplace requirements and/or industry standards refers to documented policies and
procedures and/or established protocols for workplace performance, including
compliance with applicable legislation.

Range
Calculations must include at least two quantities in the operation being performed.
Calculations may be money and/or non-money:
 examples of types of money calculations may include – percentage increase,
percentage decrease, Goods and Services Tax, currency conversion;
 examples of types of non-money calculations may include – metric/imperial
conversion, area/volume/perimeter/circumference, ratios/proportions, weights,
time, percentages, averages.

Candidate’s evidence must specify the workplace, whether real or simulated.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.

to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
