At home, you can play an
important role in setting
high expectations and supporting your child in
meeting them. If your child
needs a little extra help or
wants to learn more about a


Choose a passage from a story or an article to read aloud. Children need the opportunity to listen to a reading
by a fluent reader. Read the selection aloud two times while your child follows along.

Then have your child read the passage aloud while you monitor for accuracy. Focus on reading at an appropriate pace, pronouncing words accurately, and reading with expression.

Practice makes perfect. Students should then practice reading this passage at least twice daily for several
days.

Allow time for your child to “perform” their reading after several days of practice.

Students need to be encouraged. They know they do not read as well as they ought to and want to. It is very good
to explain fluency and explain that it is fixable and has nothing to do at all with intelligence!
Take the Fluency Challenge!
Check the Shelby website for a grade level passage to practice with
your child. When your child fluently reads the grade level passage to his/her teacher, he or she will be listed as a
Fluency Master and earn special prizes.
