CALL FOR PAPERS
for Special Section on
“Systems of Power Converters: Design, Modeling,
Control, and Implementation”
The Theme: Power electronics are trending towards more modular and distributed systems. Modern power systems are using more
and more power electronic equipment that are advantageous in terms of energy efficiency, power density, flexibility, cost reduction, etc.
For high-voltage high-power applications and those having demanding requirements on efficiency and/or power quality, multiple
converters are usually connected in series, parallel, or more complicated ways. Component-level examples of such systems include
paralleled uninterruptable power supply, cascaded photovoltaic system, solid state transformer, multi-terminal high-voltage direct current
system, etc. Converter-interfaced microgrids can be looked as system-level examples of systems of power converters. Such systems are
hard to control because of their complex topology, fast response, small inertia, and complex operating conditions. To fully unlock the
potential of such systems, integrated hardware and software designs are needed. Such designs require integrating expertise of multiple
disciplines, especially controls, power systems, and power electronics. Currently, big gaps exist between the theoretical, analytical, and
experimental research disciplines. To develop advanced solutions for the challenging problems with systems of converters, it is necessary
for researchers of different background to work closely together. Such integrated research will not only promote research on the systems
of power converters but also benefit future research on renewable energy, smart grid, and energy internet.
This special section targets at all four steps of engineering process with power electric systems, i.e. modeling, control, evaluation, and
applications. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following research topics and technologies:
 New topology designs for systems of converters
 Systems of converters developed with Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) based semiconductor devices
 Modeling of systems of converters for simulation and control
 Advanced control algorithms designs for systems of converters, including distributed control, hierarchical control, multiagent
systems, and consensus algorithms.
 Communication issues in systems of converters to support control and supervision.
 Experimental platforms for development research and development of systems of converters, including power hardware in the
loop, real time simulation, lab-scale prototypes.
 Modeling and control on converter-interfaced microgrids and systems of converters.
 Systems of converters applications: more electrical ships and aircrafts, uninterruptible power systems for datacenters, multiinverter systems for photovoltaic and wind power generation.
 Innovative applications on systems of converters
 Reliability and resiliency analysis for systems of converters
