Buchanan County Generating Facility The Buchanan County Generating Facility is located on 2.5 acres of a 9-acre tract in Buchanan County, Va., southeast of Oakwood, Va. Facts At A Glance • Simple-cycle combustion turbine electric generating facility • 88 megawatts (MW) capacity, Unit 1 - 44 MW, Unit 2 - 44 MW • Fueled by coalbed methane gas (delivered by pipeline) • Brush Generators produce 13.8 kV output • General Electric LM6000 Turbines with two 75-foot stacks • Construction began on February 8, 2002 and opened for commercial operation on June 25, 2002 • Units are primarily used in times of peak electrical demand • Electricity sold into PJM West region and surrounding markets Environmental Measures This facility meets or exceeds all stringent air quality standards of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The air permit issued limits the hours of operation of this facility, and the facility operates typically in times of extremely hot or cold weather conditions. This is a zero-discharge facility which means that water used to operate the facility is recycled as opposed to being discharged. The facility uses public water from the Buchanan County Public Service Authority for inlet air cooling and for controlling nitrogen oxide emissions. 04 11
