Pendant Control Stations – Selection:
Pendant control stations are a reliable and efficient method for the auxiliary control of lifting
elevators, hoists, conveyors, and many other industrial lifting and motion applications.
Required to operate in harsh environments, pendant control stations must contain
components with a high degree of protection against weather, heat and impact events.

They must be of a quality mechanical design – durability and repeatability over the lifetime
of the pendant control station must be guaranteed to ensure minimum machine downtime
and most importantly, peace of mind. With some of the highest technical specifications in the
market TER has a pendant control station to suit the majority of applications.
STEP 1: Select the number of operators required:
Depending on your application you may need anywhere from 2, up to over 10 buttons.
For a simple up/down application where power to the lift or conveyor is controlled elsewhere,
the Charlie range of ergonomic, hand-held pendants will suit perfectly, and can be sold with an
emergency stop for an extra level of control. If there is a requirement for several machines to be
controlled using one pendant or for other auxiliary commands to be sent such as slew left/right,
then the Mike pendant station range can facilitate up to 14 buttons in a single row.

STEP 2: Select the operator device in each position:
For each position on the pendant control station a different operator device can be specified.
Some examples of operator devices include single speed pushbuttons, two speed pushbuttons,
illuminated pushbuttons, pilot lights and emergency stop mushroom pushbuttons.

Note: In the Mike range of pendant stations dual speed operation is achieved via the pushbutton
actuation, not the contact blocks. A dual speed pushbutton must be used in conjunction with two
contact blocks.

STEP 3: Select the contact elements in each position:
For most applications a normally open contact used with a pushbutton, and a normally closed
contact for the emergency stop button will suffice. This will allow each pushbutton to close a
circuit each time it is pushed, whereas the emergency stop button will open a circuit when it is
pressed and latched. LED modules are also available for use with illuminated pushbuttons, selector
switches or pilot lights.

STEP 4: Select the disks and labels in each position:
With the Charlie and Mike ranges of pendant control station there is a broad selection of
coloured disks and adhesive labels to suit every application. The coloured disks are used to
provide information about the function of the operator e.g. ‘START’.
If several machines require control from one pendant, the Mike pendant station can provide
for up to 14 buttons to be configured for multiple auxiliary commands, using the button disks
and pendant labels (slew left, slew right, start bucket, stop bucket, etc).
Some examples of common coloured disks and labels can be found below. All coloured disks
are circular thus the same part number is used for a right, left, up or down disk etc.

STEP 5: Accessories and extra requirements:
Once the basic look and feel of the pendant control station has been selected we can then begin to
choose extra features that may be required. Some of the common options include:

Interlock
Each operator acts independently of the others by
default, however in some situations (e.g. up/down)
it might be desirable to use a mechanical interlock.
This links them such that only one can be actuated
at a time. A mechanical interlock can be used with
single, double and illuminated Mike pushbuttons.*
Hook
For easy storage of the pendant control station
a hook can be installed at the top of a Charlie
pendant, and the top or bottom of a Mike pendant.

the bottom of the pendant in short or tall variety.
Contact block
Arrangement
When using a selector switch the position of the
contact blocks on the back of the operator will
define when the contact activates.
More information can be found on page 7.
Blanking plugs
The Mike pendant stations come in 4, 8, 12 or 14
way configurations as default. To maintain the IP
rating where a different configuration is needed,
blanking plugs are required.

Pushbuttons
It is possible to mount up to three contacts for each button. LEDs can be mounted only in the
middle. All mushroom pushbuttons activate all the contacts at the same time.

It is possible to mount only two switches for each toggle selector switch. In the middle, it is possible to mount only the LED for illuminated selector switches. If the selector switches are mounted
with the lever facing downwards, then the activation of the switches is reversed.
