Introduction
Trench is a recognized world leader in the design and manufacture of high voltage equipment for application on electric utility and high energy industrial systems. As part of Trench's product scope, the Company produces a diversified range of Instrument Transformers which are installed on 69 - 800 kV electrical systems. Instrument
Transformers include: Voltage
(Potential) Transformers (both inductive and capacitive type),
Current Transformers and Combined Instrument Transformers, also referred to as metering units
(voltage and current transformer in one unit).
Combined Instrument Transformers must convert transmission class voltages and currents to standardized low and easily measurable values, which will be used for metering, protection and control of the high voltage system. As such, the need for accurate and reliable voltage and current transformation is essential.
This brochure will detail the features and characteristics of types N5 and N5H
Combined Instrument Transformers.

• excellent seismic performance as a consequence of optimized design of flanges, porcelain and their interconnection
• excellent control of internal and external insulation stresses
• hermetically sealed construction using nitrile rubber gaskets
• essentially unaffected by stray external magnetic fields
• stable accuracy over a long period of time
• perfect transient performance
• suitable for line discharging
• corrosion resistant aluminum head polyester powder coated
• oil expansion compensation by dry nitrogen cushion
• two tapped secondary voltage windings on low loss, low leakage reactance, distributed gap core
• only one foundation/support structure required in the substation as a consequence of combining the voltage and current sensing functions in one transformer

Catalog numbers are composed of three parts as shown in the example on the right.
• The TYPE contains the transformer
SERIES designation and the BIL (kV) rating. In this example, N5-900
• The Voltage Transformer Suffix represents the nominal System
Voltage in kV. In this example, 230.
• The Current Transformer Suffix is listed in two parts, Primary
Amperes and Ratio Arrangements.
In this example, 401 S.
Series
N5 Design with current transformer in the dome, voltage
N5H transformer in tank, 0.3% accuracy class.
Same design as N5 with improved accuracy rating of
0.15% Hi-ACC TM design.
BIL (kV) Basic lighting impulse insulation level.
System Voltage Nominal system voltage kV.
Primary Amperes Indicates highest nominal primary amperage.
