SPECIFICATION WRITER CLIENT COMPANY: The SPECIFICATION WRITER position resides in a $3 billion division of a $10+ billion global company that is a worldwide supplier of hand and power tools; industrial, automotive, and infrastructure equipment; as well as residential and commercial security solutions. DIVISION: An industry powerhouse with a global footprint that builds on the company founder’s initial offering of hinges, bolts, and door hardware as well as the company’s pioneering design of the first automatic door. The business segment offers a complete portfolio of automatic entrances, mechanical and electromechanical architectural hardware and electronic security systems that provide wall‐to‐wall security. ROLE: The SPECIFICATION WRITER is responsible for writing Division 8 Door Hardware specifications which focuses on new contract construction and working with architects, specifiers, developers, owners, and general contractors. This entails deciding what products go on every opening shown in a project’s plan allowing for compliance with codes, standards, laws and aesthetics. The SPECIFICATION WRITER, or SPEC WRITER, will work in a team‐selling environment with distributor sales, architectural consultants and end user reps to ensure we are influencing specs with end users and creating increased pull‐through opportunities specifically for the Company’s hardware package. REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of security industry. Work under general supervision and rely on general knowledge to perform job. Organization and time management skills. Ability to present training programs to employees and customers. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Proven knowledge of NFPA 101, Life Safety, NFPA 80, Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, IBC, NFPA 5000, ANSI A117.1 and all ADA compliance regulations. Possess complete knowledge of Builder’s Hardware. Working knowledge of Electronic Access Control, Surveillance and Intrusion systems and specifications. Five plus years of experience in the door and hardware industry, which includes writing specifications, hardware schedules, field service work, and job take off for bid preparation. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Business, Marketing or similar field preferred; or a technical/vocational school degree or equivalent. Member of the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) with AHC credentials are strongly preferred, participation in DHI’s Continuing Education Program (CEP) is a plus.
