TROUBLESHOOTING
Emergency lights do not operate
a. If CHARGE indicator is off: Check that circuit breaker for AC supply is on,
b. If CHARGE indicator is on: Check that the battery is properly connected and check the output fuse on the PC board.

Do not use outdoors.
Do not let power supply cords touch hot surfaces.
Do not mount near gas or electric heaters.
Equipment should be mounted securely in locations and at heights where it will not be readily subjected to
tampering by unauthorized personnel.
• The use of accessory equipment and replacement parts not recommended by the MANUFACTURER may cause
an unsafe condition.
• Do not use this equipment for other than its intended purpose.
• The AC voltage rating of this equipment is specified on the product label. Do not connect equipment to any other
voltage.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
INSTALLATION - SURFACE (S) MODELS
• Remove front cover and any packing material inside the unit housing that may have been used for shipping purposes.
• Remove the appropriate knockout on the right side of the unit housing for the utility wiring connector being used. Also
remove the two keyhole mounting knockouts in the upper corners on the back of the housing.
• Secure housing to the mounting surface through the keyhole knockouts using mounting hardware (not supplied) sized
appropriately to hold the unit weight.
INSTALLATION - CEILING GRID (T) MODELS
• Remove side cover and any packing material inside the unit housing that may have been used for shipping purposes.
• MPCF Series Ceiling Grid models are designed for drop-in installation in suspended ceiling grid systems. Mount the
equipment securely in place between ceiling T-Grid members. NOTICE: Safety chain or wire must be installed to
support the weight of the unit. Failure to install safety chain or wire will cause an unsafe condition. Holes are
provided at each end of the housing for connecting safety chain or wire.
• Remove the unit battery (if installed) and the appropriate mounting pattern knockouts in the unit housing to accommodate the electrical box screws. Also remove the round center wire pass knockout in the mounting pattern. If electrical
box is not being used for utility connection, wire utility directly through knockout on either end of the unit housing
using approved connector (installer supplied).
INSTALLATION - RECESSED WALL OR CEILING (R) MODELS
• Remove trim plate by pulling it away from the housing and then depressing the spring clips out of their retaining
brackets. NOTE: Remove any packing material inside the unit housing that may have been used for shipping
purposes.
• Remove the unit battery and the appropriate mounting knockout in the top or sides of the unit housing for attachment
of of utility wiring connector (installer supplied).
MPCF-1, 2 and 4 Series Installation
• Housing is designed to mount to wall or ceiling framing members by means of T-slot piercings in the housing sides.
Cut rough opening in ceiling or wall in desired location. Rough opening is 8 1/4" x 10 3/4".
Wiring Diagram
• IMount housing into ceiling or wall framing member through T-slots provided. Adjust housing so that the front edge is
flush with the finished ceiling or wall surface.
WIRING
• Extend an unswitched, 24 hour AC supply of rated voltage to the area in which the unit will be installed. DO NOT
energize the circuit at this time.
IMPORTANT: Before connecting the AC input wires you must determine how the connected emergency lighting
fixtures are to operate; Normally-On all the time, Normally-Off and only come on during a power failure, or SWITCHED
on/off. Wire according to the appropriate following section.
• Wire unit transformer as follows: All standard models are furnished with a dual voltage 120/277VAC field selectable
input. Connect unit to utility power using approved wiring or connector (see Wiring Diagram). For 120V supply
connect the utility hot wire to the black lead, for 277V supply, connect the utility hot wire to the orange lead. Connect
neutral utility wire to the white lead. Connect green chassis ground wire provided in accordance with local codes.
Attach the unit housing to the electrical box (if used). DO NOT energize circuit at this time.
CAUTION: Insulate (cap) the unused black or orange transformer lead. Failure to insulate the unused wire will cause an
unsafe condition.
Note: (1) A brown lead is used in place of black and orange leads on special models with voltages from 200V to 250 V.
(2) if a cord is to be installed, follow separate cord set installation instructions.
• Extend the emergency load circuit in accordance with Article 700 and 720 of the National Electric Code (NEC).
CAUTION: the minimum wire size required by the NEC is 12 ga. copper or equivalent. Your installation my require
larger size wire to ensure that the voltage drop does not exceed 5%. Do not exceed the total output rating of the
equipment.
LOAD OPERATION:
NORMALLY-OFF LOAD: (Load operates only during emergency)
1. Connect load line wire to proper terminal on unit output terminal block (select 120 or 277VAC)
2. Connect load neutral to NEUTRAL terminal on unit output terminal block.
CAUTION: Connection of the AC fly leads from the PC board are not required for Normally-Off load operation. All fly
leads must be insulated (capped) to prevent shock hazard.
FINAL ASSEMBLY
• If previously removed, install the unit battery and secure with mounting strap. Attach battery connection leads from
the PC board assembly to the battery terminals. Connect the red lead from the PC board assembly to the positive (+)
battery terminal. Connect the blue lead from the PC board assembly to the negative (–) battery terminal.
CAUTION: Observe polarity. Failure to connect the battery properly will result in equipment failure and an unsafe
condition.
NOTE: The connected emergency lamps WILL NOT illuminate at this time.
• Replace the unit cover
• Energize the AC supply to the unit. The unit CHARGE indicator should illuminate.
OPERATION:
NORMALLY-ON LOAD: ( Load operates at all times)
1. Connect load line and neutral conductors to unit terminal block as in Normally-Off Load connection.
2. Select appropriate voltage fly lead coming from PC Board (Black-120VAC)(Orange-277VAC). Connect selected
wire to the unswitched utility input line wire feeding the input transformer. (see Wiring Diagram)
3. Connect the neutral (White) fly lead to the unswitched utility input neutral. (see Wiring Diagram)
CAUTION: Insulate (cap) the unused black or orange transformer lead. Failure to insulate the unused wire will cause
an unsafe condition.
1. To test the equipment, depress the TEST switch. The CHARGE indicator will go out and the emergency lamp load will
illuminate (normally-off connection) or remain illuminated (normally-on connection).
2. Release the TEST switch. The emergency lamps will extinguish (normally-off connection) or remain illuminated
(normally-on connection) and the CHARGE indicator will illuminate.
3. The automatic charger will return and maintain the battery in a fully charged state. Allow the battery to charge for a
minimum 24 hours after installation or after a power failure before conducting a 90 minute test.
LOCAL SWITCH CONTROL: ( Load can be turned on and off from local wall switch – load will operate upon loss
of utility power, regardless of local switch position)
1. Connect load line and neutral conductors to unit terminal block as in Normally-Off Load connection.
2. The local switch can be wired as shown in the Wiring Diagram indicating that the feed to the switch originates at
the unswitched feed supplying the unit. It may also be fed from an alternate power source either from the same
distribution panel or different panel altogether. The switched leg must be tied to the appropriate voltage fly lead
from the PC board (Black-120VAC)(Orange-277VAC).
CAUTION: Insulate (cap) the unused black or orange transformer lead. Failure to insulate the unused wire will cause
an unsafe condition.
MAINTENANCE
Caution: Always turn off AC power to the equipment before servicing . Servicing should be performed only by
qualified service technicians. Use only manufacturer supplied replacement parts.
Battery: The battery supplied with this equipment requires no maintenance .
However, it should be tested periodically and replaced whenever it will no longer operate the connected fixtures for the
duration of a 90 minute test. The battery supplied has a life expectancy of 5-7 years when used in a normal ambient
temperature of 72 F.
TESTING
Paragraph 31-1.3.7 of NFPA 101- 1985, Life safety Code requires that all emergency lighting equipment be functionally
tested every 30 days for a minimum of 30 seconds and tested yearly for a full 90 minute duration. Written records of
testing are to be kept for examination by the authority having jurisdiction.
Exception: 30 day testing and written records of 30 second test are not required if the unit is equipped with
SELF DIAGNOSTIC (-SX option).
