TECH NOTE
REMOTE INDICATION SYSTEM
TYPE RIS
Version FG and RG
Description
This paper contains some advices for troubleshooting regarding the use of the remote indication system type RIS-FG and type RIS-RG. It
provides hints to find a solution for the most common issues.
Software
The software TMAS PC-Manager Lite is a third party software made by TCAM Technology Pte Ltd. (http://www.tcam.com.sg). The software is
used to configure the remote indication devices type RIS-FG and RIS-RG and to receive the SMS transmitted by these devices.
To configure the remote indication devices, configuration sets must be created with the software (menu Settings->Devices). (please refer to
chapter “3.3 Creating a configuration set“ in the instruction manual.)
When configuring a device the following entries must be considered carefully:
· The PIN for each device (if a PIN is necessary for network access)
· The telephone number for the control center (including country code if necessary)
Also the serial number must be entered correctly. Only a correct serial number can identify the connected device, that needs to be configured.
For any other software related issues, like program crashes, compatibilty issues, we recommend to contact TCAM Technology Pte Ltd. as
this is a third party software.
GSM network
Once a fault was transmitted to the device (by short range radio or potential free contact) the remote indication will try to establish a connection the GSM network to send a short message via SMS (short message service).
The GSM unit built into the remote indication devices have got a red status LED. With this LED it recognizable if the GSM network is sufficient.
When starting the sending process, the LED will blink in certain rhythm:
ca. 1 second on / 1 second off
After logging into the GSM network the blinking rhythm will change to:
1 short blink every ca. 3 seconds
If the blinking rhythm is not changing, the login fails. The reasons for that can be the following:
· wrong PIN
· insufficient GSM network coverage
If the login is working, but no short message is received by the control center, the following
possible reason can be checked:
· no short message service (SMS) enabled for the SIM card
· wrong number for the control center
· insufficient GSM network coverage at the control center site

RIS-RG
A remote indication device type RIS-RG must be connected to a NO contact of a fault indicator.
E.g. for the external connectors shown in figure 1, the RIS-RG must be connected to terminal 14 and 15 of the change-over contact.
The contacts of the RIS-RG can also be tested without a fault indicator. Therefore to terminals, that are side by side, must be connected to
each other. E.g. by a cable or a pair of steel tweezers.
When starting the sending process, the LED of the GSM unit will start to blink (see also chapter “GSM network“). If the LED is not starting to
blink, no contact in the external connector of the RIS-RG was established.
RIS-FG
A remote indication device type RIS-FG can be tested with the help of a short-circuit indicator type FLA3 and a remote control type HS. With
the help of the remote control a remote test can be initiated (MAIN->remote->test). After initiating the test, the FLA3 will start blinking and will
leave radio mode. Now a process starts, where a communication is established to the RIS-device. This can take up to 1 minute.
When data is exchanged between the indicators type FLA3 and the type RIS-FG then connection LED of the RIS-FG will start to blink. After
data exchange, the GSM sending process wil start, which is shown by a blinking LED on the GSM unit (see also chapter “GSM network”).
If the connection LED of the type RIS-FG is not starting to blink, the range of the short radio communication might be exceeded.
Please note: Only fault indicators type FLA3 and the remote indication devices type RIS-FG with the same customer code can communicate
with each other. For details on the customer code please refer to instruction manual for short-circuit indicator type FLA3 and remote control
type HS chapter “2.3 Identification code and customer code of the FLA3”.
