Summer Technology Institute
The Florham Park Technology Department is proud to introduce its
summer technology-training program. This program will offer
teachers of the Florham Park District technology classes in a format
that will foster growth in a variety of areas. The classes are designed
to help you understand how the software and the hardware operate,
give examples of ways to utilize these tools, and provide the support
to create activities and projects to be used with your students. On
average, classes will run for three days in length allowing a
participant to make significant strides in understanding the
technology.
As a culminating activity to the class you will be asked to create a
project. This project must be something that will be used in your
classroom. As in the past, you will receive $50 per half-day as well as
professional development credit for your time providing the projects
are completed.
To sign-up, fill-out the registration form attached and return it to
me. Unfortunately, class size is limited, so openings will be
filled on a first come, first served basis. Please read the class
descriptions and signup quickly.
We are very excited about being able to offer these classes to you
and will guarantee you walk away with many new and exciting ideas.

Workshop Descriptions
Technology Integration - Tentatively June 22-23. (This is a full day workshop 8:30am to 3pm)
This workshop is for the teacher want to use a project based learning model for instruction. In the two days,
participants will look at how projects can be built that will accomplishing the skills and concepts that are
required in your curriculum and the core content standards. There are many skills and concepts that we all
need to teach. When these skills are taught using activities that show 'real world' connections as well tie
related concepts together, students retain more of the information. This workshop will expose how
technology can be used to help teachers and students make connections. This workshop will be presented
by an outside consultant (Pre-requisite: Participants need to be comfortable with iPhoto, iTunes, and
iMovie)
Computer Basics – getting past level one-technology competencies - July 19-21
This workshop is for the teachers who are looking to advance through all of the "level one" competencies
as outlined in your PIPs. Together we will review many of the features of the way files are used and how
you can do a better job of managing your work. We will also investigate the software that comes with the
operating system and how it can be used in your classroom. Included software: Computer Basics, Basic
Word Processing, File Management, District Email, Web Browser Basics, Curriculum Based Courseware,
Grading Program (if applicable), Basic Use of the District Network. This will be a great session to get a
better understanding on how your laptop can work for you.
Using the iLife Suite in the classroom – July 26-28
Bring the sights and sounds that excite and inspire your students into the classroom effortlessly with iLife a highly integrated software suite that comes on laptop. iLife features iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, and
GarageBand. With iLife, students/teachers can express themselves with images, movies, music, and text. It
offers a flexible set of learning tools that can help students demonstrate their individual strengths
empowering them as creators of content rather than just consumers. (Available for students only in RMS &
BRK)
Teachers across the country are using iLife to enliven lessons, meet instructional standards, and guide their
students toward more productive futures. Whether students are making visual records of science
experiments, producing historical documentaries, or creating digital stories, with iLife every subject comes
to life.
Digital Story Telling with iMovie - August 2-4
Do your students consider themselves writers? Do you have trouble motivating your students to write?
Story Telling is a great way to motivate and influence students' self-expression in helping them tell stories
about an important place. The added dimension of video provides a meeting place for these students and
their creativity.
One student summarized a storytelling project best: "This year I have learned that places are not just
physical matter but emotional places in peoples' hearts. iMovie has made all my thoughts and feelings come
alive in an awesome movie."
Appleworks (a teachers best friend) - August 9-11
This workshop will cover the basic operation of word processing as well as the desktop publishing. You
will learn how to do basic editing and formatting, utilize the spell checker and thesaurus, add columns,
create tables and utilize clip art. We will investigate how to make and use pre-made documents. We will
also cover the workings of a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet is a set of cells in rows and columns that can be
used to write text, numbers or perform mathematical calculations. These numbers, calculations and text
can be incorporated into a chart or a graph. We will work with databases, which are data organizers. We
will use databases to create mail merges, personalized letters, and forms for organizing information for
students. Lastly, we will look at the painting portion of the program to edit graphics for your documents or
web page. (This is a course for Level 2 users)
Building a Web Quest - August 16-18
The Internet has such a wealth of information, resources and contacts that every teacher should be savvy in
its use. The Internet is also an overwhelming place for students to search for the answer to questions we
ask. One alternative is to create a project where all the answers are found in identified locations, thus
allowing students to concentrate on understanding and organizing the desired content. Together we will
build a web Quest for your students to use. Please bring a current project or idea to use with your students.
This web quest will be placed on your web site.
Unleash the power of Presentations - August 22-23
Motivating our students to want to learn is key as we all strive to help our children grow. The use of
multiple medias can be another way to turn kids on to ideas and skills we are teaching. Your laptop comes
assembled to help you to motivate. Installed on your computer is a combination of the following software:
iPhoto, iMovie iTunes, PowerPoint, or Appleworks. Any of these programs can be used to assemble
images, movies and sounds that will help your students receive a more holistic look at the ideas you want to
share with them. Together we create engaging lesson resources.
Building Learning Environments (teacher made web pages an Blogs) - August 24-25
As more and more of our students access the web from home, we can take advantage of this phenomenon
to help students with their learning. In this class you will learn how to create simple web pages using a web
editor program that will enable you to create assignments, special projects, updates or links to useful
information for your class. We will also review and discuss weBlogging as a tool to motivate students to
write and think. You will be able to use these tools to prolong the learning day or to create a place to share
your class experiences with the community. By the time you leave, you will have a web page that is posted
on the school web site and be able to update it.
