Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows and Word
Using Key Combinations - Whenever two keys are referred to with a + in the
middle, hold down the first key listed while you tap the second key. For example,
for Ctrl+X you would hold down the CTRL key while you tap the X key.
Moving The Cursor With the Keyboard
Arrow Keys .................. The right and left arrow keys move the cursor in the
direction of the arrow one character at a time. (Or, if you
are in a menu, one menu choice at a time.) The up and
down arrow keys move the cursor up or down one line at
a time.
Ctrl + ↑ or ↓ ................. Holding down the control key while tapping an up or
down arrow key moves the cursor up and down one
paragraph at a time.
Ctrl + → or ← .............. Holding down the control key while tapping the right or
left arrow key moves the cursor one whole word at a time.
End ................................ The end key moves the cursor to the end of the line it is
currently in
Home ............................ The home key moves the cursor to the beginning of the
line it is currently in.
Ctrl + Home .................. Moves the cursor to the beginning of the document
Ctrl + End ..................... Moves the cursor to the end of the document
Highlighting
To Highlight Using Only The Keyboard:
To highlight words ................ Using any method mentioned above, move the cursor
to the beginning of the word you wish to highlight.

Now HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY while
tapping the right arrow key.
To highlight a whole line ...... Place the cursor at the beginning of the line, HOLD
DOWN THE SHIFT KEY and press the “end” key
To highlight blocks of text .... Place the cursor at the beginning of the block, HOLD
DOWN THE SHIFT KEY, then use any combination
of arrow keys, “home” or “end” keys to get the
cursor to the end of the block you wish to select
To highlight everything from the beginning to the end:
Hold down the “control” key (Ctrl) and tap the A key
(NOTE: With ctrl + A it is not necessary to move the
cursor to the beginning of the document first.)
Helpful Highlighting Techniques Using The Mouse:
Double click ................. Highlights one word and the space that comes after
Ctrl + click .................... Highlights a sentence and the space that comes after
Triple click ................... Highlights a paragraph
Shift key ........................ Shift can be used to highlight blocks of text using the
mouse as well. Click at the beginning of the block you
wish to highlight, hold down the shift key, then click at
the end of the block. Everything between the first click
and the second click will be highlighted.
To highlight multiple files or icons (in order to move or delete several at once):
Click on the first file or selection, and then hold down the
control key while clicking on the next. Continue with any
additional items you wish to select.
Opening and Moving Around in Menus

To open the start menu .. Push the key with the windows logo on it (
) then use
the arrow keys to move through the choices. When you
get to the choice you want, use the enter key to select it.

To open menus from the menu bar (file, edit, view, insert etc.)
Hold down the Alt key (not Ctrl) and tap the underlined
letter in the word. (For example- for file: Alt + F, for edit:
Alt + E, for Format: Alt + O). Once you open the menu,
use the arrow keys to move through the choices and the
enter key to select a choice.
Note – anytime you see an underlined letter within a menu, you can make that
choice by holding down the Alt key and tapping that letter.
Common Keyboard Commands
The following key combinations will perform these common tasks:
(NOTE: to use these combinations, press and hold down the first button
listed, then tap the second key listed. Example – for Ctrl + S you would
hold down the “Ctrl” key while you tap the “s” on the keyboard)
Ctrl + S .......................... Save
Ctrl + P .......................... Print
Ctrl + C.......................... Copy
Ctrl + X.......................... Cut
Ctrl + V.......................... Paste
Ctrl + O.......................... Open (To open an existing file)
Ctrl + N.......................... Brings up a new, blank sheet
Ctrl + Z .......................... Undo
Ctrl + Y.......................... Redo
The following combinations use the Windows Logo Key
Logo+M......................... Minimize all the windows
Logo+C.......................... Open the control panel
