PRESIDENT ’ S WELCOME SUPERINTENDENT ’ S

Welcome

WELCOME

I would like to start by welcoming you all to the

Death Valley ‘49ers 65 th

Annual Encampment.

I would like to dedicate this year’s encampment in the memory of Mr. Ken Graydon. For those of you who didn’t know him, not only was he our M.C., he was a singer, song writer and a world renowned cowboy poet. I feel he was the best of the best in his league. I felt compelled and obligated to the ‘49ers to bring back the Cowboy Poetry as part of the program this year.

We have a new stage going in at the old fiddler’s campground area. The Wagon Train will be arriving on

Friday, but the equestrian group can’t make it.

With that said, I hope to see all of you in November…

Yours Truly,

Robert Whipple, President Death Valley ’49ers

Welcome to Death Valley National Park! I hope that you enjoy the many wonders of Death Valley.

We invite you to celebrate two anniversaries with s this year-the 20th anniversary of the Death Valley

National Park on October 31,2014 and the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Protection Act.

In 1994, the Desert Protection Act added 1.4 million acres to Death Valley National Monument, designated over 91% of the park as wilderness and renamed the monument to a national park. Today,

Death Valley National Park is the largest national park outside Alaska with 3.4 million acres ranging from over 11,000 feet to 282 feet below sea level.

I invite you to enjoy the park while you are here, to discover new places in your favorite national park, and to tell your friends and family about the hidden treasures of Death Valley National Park, protected for you and your families to enjoy both now and into the future

Kathy Billings, Superintendent

Website Update

www.deathvalley49ers.org

I am very excited to announce the launch of our newly re-designed website! A few of our goals were to make the site faster, easier to navigate, and more efficient to manage/update. Most of all, we wanted to help prospective members get to know us better. If you take a look at the site I think you’ll get a pretty good idea of who we are and what we do. I would like to thank Phil Goodman for the many hours he put in researching and developing the best content management system for our organization.

One new function on the website is the ability to register and create a member account. With an account you can subscribe to site updates via email, access other special site functions, and be identified uniquely when commenting on posts. Soon we will update our store so that you can purchase/renew memberships, and purchase publications and other items securely online.

Stay tuned and connected with our social media accounts such as facebook and twitter and feel free to look around and let us know what you think of the new site!

As always, if you have any questions or need help you can contact us at webmasterdv49ers@hotmail.com or visit our “contact” page on the website and send us a note.

Dr. d.s. harwood, phrenologist

Dr. D.S. Harwood, a well know Boston phrenologist, will be visiting the ‘49ers encampment this week offering his “head examination” services to assist the unwary pilgrim set on making his fortune in

California. Become aware of your own personal strengths and weaknesses that may leave you vulnerable to the wilds of the unscrupulous. Through Dr. Harwood’s skills in the science of phrenology, he will provide counsel on a variety of issues to help you determine if your partner can be trusted. Come visit Dr. Harwood for a consultation prior to entering into a matrimonial union or any business partnership. Protect yourself by getting your intended partner’s head examined for moral quality and fidelity. Office conveniently located between the One-Shot Saloon and Gaming Parlor and Gigi’s Terpsichorean Delights. Clients seen with or without appointment. Visit with Dr Harwood at his stand by the Tennis Court & Gold Panning.

John “Snowshoe” Thompson, Mailman of the Sierra

Meet John “Snowshoe” Thompson (1826-1876) in this Chautauqua performance.

Snowshoe is famous as the 19 th

Century “Mailman of the Sierra” who braved twenty winters skiing back and forth over the Sierra delivering the mail and news to the gold and silver mines. Unlike many other gold rush immigrants in California seeking fortune, Snowshoe found enduring fame through deed and character rather than mining riches. The performances will introduce you to this colorful individual but each will contain some different stories from his extraordinary life.

Shifting Sands

Past President, Ray Sisson passed away January 12,

2014. Ray was President in 1999, the year of our 50th anniversary.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free

I’m following the path God laid for me

I took his hand when I heard him call

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day

To laugh, to live, to work or play

Tasks left undone must stay that way

I found that place at the close of the day

If my parting had left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss

Ah yes, these things, I too will miss

Be not burdened with times of sorrow

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow

My life’s been full, I savored much

Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief

Lift up your heart and share with me

God wanted me now, He set me free
