MICROWAVE TECHNICIAN Occupational Code: 5410 Salary Range: 25A Status: Classified FLSA: Non-exempt Established: 8/05 4/06 NATURE OF WORK: This is journey level work installing, testing, and repairing microwave telecommunications equipment, including designing site requirements; installing, and implementing remote network facilities utilizing voice radio, telephone, data communications, facsimile and related equipment and apparatus. Work requires some knowledge of the theory and principles involved, and ability to apply acquired skills in developing better overall maintenance and installation techniques and utilization of equipment. An employee of this classification is expected to work independently after the completion of a short probationary period. Maintenance and installation work is done in accordance with established procedures. However, some initiative is required in developing improved methods and techniques as well as in utilization of microwave equipment. Reports to a higher level administrator. Installs, aligns and tests microwave and associated multiplexing equipment, and maintains equipment control log and failure reports. Provides maintenance on digital microwave radio systems, components and related electronic sensing devices. Maintains maintenance and repair logs. Sets up, calibrates, and operates instruments for microwave and power control systems. Oversees outside contractors during system or subsystem electronic equipment installations. Performs system-level troubleshooting to determine point of failure of microwave circuits. Implements corrective procedures, redesigns or modifies new and existing equipment. Repairs analog and digital microwave assemblies, subassemblies or cards. Analyzes and corrects antenna and other system problems by making adjustments and corrections. 5410 5410 MICROWAVE TECHNICIAN (Cont.) Reads blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings and engineering instructions to assemble electronic units. Performs other related work as required. Ability to apply this knowledge to the extent of modifying standard types of equipment. Knowledge in concepts, characteristics, capabilities and theoretical design of microwave radio equipment as well as sophisticated electronic equipment. Ability to design and build equipment racks, antenna mounts and cabling devices. Ability to analyze and interpret schematic diagrams, electronic specifications and manufacturers equipment manuals. Some knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, tools and materials used in microwave systems testing, repair and maintenance work. Some knowledge of the causes of trouble common to microwave systems, and the ability to trace and locate such trouble. Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission, governing the operation and maintenance of microwave systems. Some knowledge of one or more technical systems and their applications. Ability to use shop equipment such as drills and drill presses. Ability to climb towers (200 feet or less) and work at some heights in conjunction with antenna installation and maintenance. Skill in the use of various tools and equipment used in testing microwave systems equipment. Ability to stay abreast of new technological developments in the field of microwave systems. Excellent mechanical aptitude, coordination and dexterity. Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the general public. 5410 5410 MICROWAVE TECHNICIAN (Cont.) Ability to communicate effectively and concisely in writing and verbally. DESIRABLE BASIC TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and considerable (2 - 4 years) experience in repairing and installing microwave radio systems. It is desirable that the referred experience be within the last five (5) years. Possession of Motorola National Service Training Certificates or relevant in-house training certificates are highly desirable. A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Employee Relations. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Use of hand tools, screwdrivers, socket sets, digital volt meters, frequency counters dummy loads, through line watt meters, frequency select volt meters, radio system analyzers, oscilloscopes, radio frequency analyzers, spectrum analyzers, distortion analyzers, data analyzers, grinder, wire wheels, soldering iron, hammer drills, drills, and safety belts. Occasional use of specialized radio programming computers. Utilizes other various types of equipment deemed appropriate in the classification. The employee frequently lifts and/or moves items weighing 30 to 50 pounds and occasionally performs heavy lifting and/or moving over 50 pounds.
