Update #1: The bridge is now open however the westbound turn lanes of Colonial Boulevard that merge onto McGregor Boulevard will remain closed for another hour. On Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11:50 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a serious motorcycle accident on Colonial Boulevard at the westbound entrance of the Midpoint Memorial Bridge. Once on scene police learned a motorcyclist struck a vehicle as it was traveling westbound on the Midpoint Memorial Bridge just east of the McGregor Boulevard flyover. The unidentified motorcyclist was ejected and has since been transported to the hospital as a trauma alert. Police have shut down the bridge in both directions and a Traffic Homicide Investigator is on scene due to the severity of the injuries. The Fort Myers Police Department advises the bridge will be shut down for the next few hours and asks that you use an alternate route to come into or exit Fort Myers/Cape Coral. Police are working diligently to have the bridge open in time for the morning commute.
