HRDV8/16 Disk Drive Change Application Note Overview This document will assist you in determining which disk drive to replace in your HRDV8/16 (DVMS1600/800 Duplex) when there is a disk drive requiring replacement. Disclaimer All information included in this document is intended to be accurate; however, Honeywell does not guarantee that the information contained within this document will absolutely determine the correct disk drive to replace. It is possible the technical issues are not caused by a hard drive but by the Main CPU Board, power supply, cabling, or another component. All replacement procedures must be done by an authorized Field Service Technician to maintain the terms and conditions of your warranty. Disk drives used as replacements must be on the list of HRDV8/16 Compatible Hard Drives available at: http://www.honeywellvideo.com/products/dvs/dvr/63004.html Requirements To perform a disk drive change, you will require the following: • • An HRDV8/16 unit (DVMS Duplex 1600/800) with the most current software (RAS 4.0, embedded 4.0) A qualified Field Service Technician familiar with the use and operation of the HRDV8/16 (DVMS Duplex 1600/800), and also familiar with the concept of Master and Slave disk drive jumpering. Additional Information Product literature is available at: http://www.honeywellvideo.com/products/dvs/dvr/63004.html Software and upgrade procedures are available at: http://www.honeywellvideo.com/support/downloads/downloads_dvr.html#HRDV Document D002500 – 03/06 – Rev 1.00 Step 1. Check for and Collect Disk Drive Error Messages 1. Check the unit Log file and review it for error messages (Main Menu ➤ System Log). 2. Check Smart Statistics in the individual disk screens (Main Menu ➤ Storage Setup ➤ select each individual drive). Check the Disk Status message of either Good or Needs Service. Step 2. Check Error Messages Against this Table and Identify the Disk Drive Number (0 – 3) Look up the error message in the following table to identify the most probable disk drive number. Note There may be error messages not contained in this table. Error or Message Basic Description Drive Number Check Disk 0 Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks. 0 One of the drives has a SMART IDE drive error, check the smart statistics for an error that has dropped below the threshold value. The drive will most likely have to be replaced. The smart stats are checked by the software once a day at midnight, if a drive is found to need service, a Check Disk X message will appear in the log file. Check Disk 1 Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 1 Check Disk 2 Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 2 Check Disk 3 Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 3 DISK 17 0 Error reading or writing bootblock 0 DISK 17 1 Error reading or writing bootblock 1 Rev 1.00 2 Document D002500 03/06 Error or Message (cont’d) Basic Description Drive Number Disk 105 0 Error on recycle 0 Disk 105 1 Error on recycle 1 Disk 105 2 Error on recycle 2 Disk 105 3 Error on recycle 3 Disk 118 0 Problem reading disk 0 Disk 118 1 Problem reading disk 1 Disk 118 2 Problem reading disk 2 Disk 118 3 Problem reading disk 3 Disk 119 0 Problem reading disk 0 Disk 119 1 Problem reading disk 1 Disk 119 2 Problem reading disk 2 Disk 119 3 Problem reading disk 3 IDE 9 1 IDE Poll line not responding 0 IDE 9 2 IDE Poll line not responding 1 IDE 9 16 IDE Poll line not responding 2 IDE 9 17 IDE Poll line not responding 3 Needs Service Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks. 0 (This message appears in the individual disk drive screen, Menu ➤ Storage Setup ➤ select a drive) The smart stats are checked constantly in real time in the SMART screen and disk screen. If a statistic value is lower then a threshold value, the Drive Status will change to Needs Service. Needs Service Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 1 Needs Service Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 2 Needs Service Disk has failed SMART internal drive checks 3 Step 3. Identifying the Disk Drive Physical Location in the HRDV The HRDV16/8 (DVMS Duplex 1600/800) can have up to 4 IDE Disk drives installed internally. There are two IDE disk drive buses, Bus A and Bus B. Two disk drives can be attached to each IDE Bus. These drives appear as Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 2, and Disk 3 in the Disk screen of the HRDV. Rev 1.00 3 Document D002500 03/06 Drive Number IDE Bus Drive Jumpered As 0 A Master 1 A Slave 2 B Master 3 B Slave IDE Bus B Disk drives 2 and 3 when connected here IDE Bus A Disk drives 0 and 1 when connected here Front of HRDV16/8 (DVMS Duplex) Power down the unit to examine the unit interior. Using the above pictures and table, compare the drive number you got from the error table in Step 2. Identify the correct IDE Bus cable. Follow this cable to the disk drives attached. You may have to physically remove the disk drives to identify which disk drive is the one you are looking for (Master and Slave as per the above table). The disk drive jumpers are at the back of the disk drive, and typically there is labelling to show how to set the jumpers for Master or Slave on the drive. Rev 1.00 4 Document D002500 03/06 Step 4. Replace the Disk Drive and Run the Disk Recovery Utility Follow this procedure to install the new disk drive. You will run the disk recovery utility to format the new disk drive and rebuild all the video pointers on the existing installed disk drives. This will take a few hours to complete. When completed the unit will automatically put itself back in record and start recording, provided Autorecord is enabled as described in the following procedure. Note Recording video will not occur during this process. 1. Power off the unit. 2. Replace the disk drive (set jumpers to the same as the disk replaced). 3. Power on the unit. 4. Log on and open the User Preferences screen (Main Menu ➤ System Setup ➤ User Preferences). Set Autorecord to Enabled. 5. Run the Disk Recovery utility (Main Menu ➤ System Setup ➤ System Utilities ➤ Data Recovery ➤ Proceed). Use of Disk Recovery Utility In some instances it may not be necessary to replace a disk drive. The Disk Recovery utility can be executed to rebuild the disk drives. This utility will initialize all disk drives, then re-assemble the video stored on the disk drives. The utility can take several hours to complete. You will run the Disk Recovery utility to format the new disk drive and rebuild all the video pointers on the existing installed disk drives. This will take a few hours to complete. When completed, the unit will automatically put itself back in record mode and start recording (provided Autorecord is enabled, as described in Step 4). Note Rev 1.00 Recording does not occur while this utility is executing. 5 Document D002500 03/06 Honeywell Video Systems (Head Office) 2700 Blankenbaker Pkwy, Suite 150 Louisville, KY 40299, USA www.honeywellvideo.com ℡ +1.800.796.2288 Honeywell Video Systems Northern Europe Netwerk 121 1446 WV Purmerend, The Netherlands www.SecurityHouse.nl ℡ +31.299.410.200 Honeywell Security Australia Pty Ltd.
