demanding functional requirements: a wide spectrum
In commissioning plants, employees compile the
goods which come from the warehouse sorted by
qualities according to the orders made and forward
them to the outgoing goods department.
What is typical for these plants: they are usually
rather manageable and limited to a certain space.
Thus the conveying distances also are relatively
short. Regarding their design, the packing stations arranged in parallel are identically planned.
Depending on the order quantities, more or fewer
packing stations can be employed. Owing to this redundant plant design, very simple starters are fully
sufficient to ensure plant availability. Ideal for the
purpose: our I/O-controlled variant of motor starters
SIRIUS MCU. The prewired and readily tested encapsulated motor starters offer complete on-site motor
control as well as a lockable maintenance switch for
service cases. Due to the minimized spatial expansion, the MCUs’ control via I/O wiring is recommendable. This additionally facilitates cost-efficient system assemblies.

Bottling plant with AS-Interface
Typical stations in the dry area of a beverage bottling plant are: dismantling of the pallets, separation of bottles and crates, cleaning and intermediate storage of the crates, joining of refilled bottles
and crates, palleting and dispatch.
Furthermore, the conveyor technology represents
the link between these stations and the wet area,
where the actual bottling process takes place.
A bus system is used to synchronize the entire
process and to provide communication among the
spatially separated stations. The demanding ambient conditions call for equipment in robust design.
This is a clear case for the motor starters SIRIUS MCU.
Their robust metal enclosure and the connection
technology without plugs lets them master the
great challenges in bottling plants perfectly. They
are connected to the controllers via AS-Interface,
which enables easy communication and monitoring.

Conveyor technology in the automotive industry
ers: conveyor engineering enables distances to be
In the automotive industry, system and production
downtimes generally entail enormous costs. This is
why the aspects of high availability, preventive maintenance and comprehensive diagnostics are focused
throughout the entire system.
A modular design, high degree of protection IP65 and
powerful bus systems frequently represent the backbone of conveyor technology systems. In the final assembly and paint shop sections, such systems for example consist of few basic modules (switch, turntable,
horizontal conveyor, lift) which can be combined as desired and each of which represents a technological unit
consisting of mechanical and electronic components.
The frequently branched and spatially expanded assembly of these systems requires a large number of drives,
which are interlinked via a high-performance bus system such as PROFIBUS or PROFINET:
bridged efficiently and goods to be transported as
fast as possible from A to B. Such plants, which often
are a highly complex matter, must meet ever greater
requirements in terms of availability, reliability and
performance. A task which can only be solved if all
conveyor components interact perfectly around the
clock.

Baggage handling
With baggage handling systems at airports, the
focus is always on the overall concept. In this context, plant availability has the highest priority. Every
unscheduled breakdown would have far-reaching
consequences – for passengers, airlines and airports.
As such a plant often stretches across many miles and
baggage must be transported over long dis-tances, a
large number of widely branched drive lines (motors
and motor starters) is required. Here, we recommend
the use of motor starters M200D.
Items of baggage are simultaneously handed in at
several check-in points, they are weighed and supplied with a badge. The baggage is then joined and
runs through an automatic multistage X-ray check
before it reaches the actual heart of the plant: the
sorter – a kind of oversized roundabout with discharge points for the different gates. According to
their destination code, the individual items of baggage are then guided over conveying routes to the
respective gates.
With their functionalities like preventive diagnoses
and extended diagnostic options via AS-Interface,
they decisively contribute to an increased plant availability. The risk of an unscheduled breakdown is minimized, this is a benefit for everyone involved.

Assembly line
Various work steps are carried out in assembly lines – each in its own assembly
cell, in which the infeed of the workpiece
and material and the actual assembly
process take place. Every cell must process an abundance of signals: for pneumatic control, for precise positioning
tasks of the workpiece and tool etc.
Conveyor technology ensures the interlinking of the individual assembly cells
into an assembly line.
Motor starters ET 200pro are used both
in the individual cells and for interlinking
the individual stations into an assembly
line. Data is exchanged between the stations via PROFIBUS/PROFINET.
The compact starters can be positioned
in an optimal way without requiring additional space or further control cabi-
nets. Here, the modular concept of the
ET 200pro allows numerous signals and
drives to be controlled as required.
Be it a braking function, on-site operation, high switching frequencies, safe
shutdown or reproducible shutdown
times: motor starters ET 200pro meet
the most diverse requirements in drive
technology. Their high diagnostic capability considerably contributes to smooth
operation and high plant availability.
What is more, the individual motor starter can be flexibly set (e.g. for shutdown
classes, response to overload or overcurrent, etc.) and can thus be optimally
tuned to the respective motor or process.
Integrated digital inputs can be used to
enable other functions which are typical
for conveyor engineering which in turn
relieves the controller.
As a further highlight, both local as well
as system-spanning safety concepts can
be realized with Safety Integrated – for
the seamless protection of persons and

the controller and parameterized. They
are available as direct-on-line, reversing
or soft starters in different performance
classes:
Thanks to the finely modular design of
our mature system, you can perfectly
adapt the number of channels and motor starters to the specific requirements
of your application. Superfluous channels
and unnecessary costs thus are a matter
of the past. Even if requirements change
frequently, the replacement, or respectively the combination of peripheral modules, allows you to reduce plant set-up
times noticeably. You will save up to 80%
of the wiring overhead with these completely prewired motor starters ET 200S.
For example, all supply voltages are connected only once and are automatically
connected to the next module when they
are lined up. A vigorous power bus with
an amperage of up to 50 A feeds the individual motor starters. An integral part
– and thus also prewired – is the safety
technology. Last but not least,
SIMATIC ET 200S also saves a lot of space
in the control cabinet or control box.
With a strictly distributed design directly
on the machine, it is for the most part
merely the feed-in unit and the higherlevel control which remain in the control
cabinet, this provides for space savings
up to 50%.

complex, highly automated plants. What is predestined for such applications is the ET 200S automation system and motor starters ET 200S.
Whether it is a matter of regulating the energy,
CO2 content, fresh air supply or heat: motor starters
ET 200S are the first choice for controlling specific
applications such as energy shields, vents or lighting. With them, the numerous drives in the individual greenhouse cells can be arranged in a spacesaving manner. The modularity of ET 200S offers
you a host of advantages: you will save up to 80% of
wiring, up to 60% of configuration and documentation expense and up to 50% of space in the control
cabinet. This simplifies the design, minimizes fault
risks and provides considerable cost savings for you.
What’s more, modules can quickly and easily be hotswapped, even by untrained employees. Last but not
least, fast diagnostic options with channel precision
ensure central monitoring of the widely stretched
greenhouses, thus reducing maintenance costs.
Even lighting around the clock is the ideal prerequisite for perfect plant growth. This is only ensured by
special high-pressure discharge lamps, which however burst when exceeding a certain service life –
a potential source of danger for persons and plants.
In order to avoid this, motor starters ET 200S are
the choice for lamp controlling and monitoring. The
motor starters ET 200S High Feature acquire current
values and statistic data, such as operating hours,
thus enabling preventive lamp replacement during
normal operation. The resulting advantage is obvious: operators can be sure of constant lighting without interruptions.

Motor Starter ES software:
the parameterization tool for communication-capable motor starters
The Motor Starter ES software supports the easy parameterization, commissioning, diagnostics as well
as preventive maintenance of communication-capable motor starters M200D Standard, PROFIBUS and
PROFINET, SIMATIC ET 200pro as well as SIMATIC ET 200S motor starters High Feature and ECOFAST.
Handy variants, simple
licensing
Motor Starter ES is available in three
variants which can be distinguished
according to ease of operation, scope of
functionality and price.
Whether Basic, Standard or Premium –
via online download, you will quickly
obtain the matching license. You
will only have to pay the scope of
performance that you actually use,
upgrades are possible at favorable
charges. The Trial License allows you
to test the software functionality for 14
days without any risk. A floating license
allows you to activate any number of
users – independent of the number of
program installations.
Easy preparation of templates
For devices with small differences, the
central modification of few parameters
in many identical devices or for the easy
parameterization in many identical ap-
plications, Motor Starter ES is a powerful
tool for the simplified generation of
parameter files. The template file contains all possible parameters which can
be influenced by the user. The files can
also be easily and quickly transferred to
other devices.
Teleservice via MPI
The Premium variants of Motor Starter ES
support the use of MPI Teleservice for
remote device diagnosis. This facilitates
diagnosis and maintenance and shortens
response times for servicing.
Printouts conforming to standards
Motor Starter ES clearly facilitates
machine documentation. The software
tool enables parameterizations to be
printed out in compliance with DIN
EN ISO 7200. The elements to be printed
can be easily selected and compiled as
required.
The advantages of Motor Starter ES
■ User-friendly handling due to graphic visualization and a clear
menu structure
■ Reparameterizations possible during normal operation
■ Time savings thanks to shorter start-up times
■ Preventive maintenance
■ Easy and fast diagnosis
■ Remote access to the motor starters via all standard communication services
■ Trace function for fast and transparent commissioning (only with M200D)

Diagnostics / maintenance
Devices are either accessed via the serial
device interface or with PROFIBUS DPV1capable motor starters from any node in
the PROFIBUS. In addition, the Premium
version permits an integration into STEP 7
HW-Config.
It is also possible to test and control the motor
starters without DP-Master. In this case,
the software can either be linked with the
motor starters by means of a point-to-point
connection (serial) or communicate with
the individual devices from any node in the
PROFIBUS (DPV1).
Statistic data (e.g. operating hours,
shutdown currents, etc.) can be read out for
preventive maintenance.
