Bearings can be put under load in radial and/or axial direction. Rolling bearings can be designed to the requirements of any load. FAG WheelSet Tapered Roller Bearings Tapered Roller Bearings Tapered roller bearings can be dismantled, inner and outer rings can be separately installed. As tapered roller bearings can only support axial loads from one direction, a second tapered roller bearing must be inversely fitted to counter the load. Compared to angular contact ball bearings, which have similar characteristics, tapered roller bearings provide a higher load-carrying capacity but therefore have a limited speed range. FAG WheelSet 1st Generation FAG has designed angular contact ball bearings for both the front and rear axles of passenger cars which support and bear high lateral forces during driving on round bends. Advantages: • Defined and preset bearing clearance • For-life lubrication • Sealing • For front and rear wheels Including for example: • Compact bearing unit with a double row angular contact ball bearing • Screw with hexagon socket • 2 self-locking nuts • 2 nuts with locking paint 7 FAG WheelSet 1T Generation (T = Tapered Bearing) FAG WheelSet 1T Generation Similar to wheel bearings of the 1st Generation, wheel bearings of the 1T Generation are compact bearing units. However, instead of balls they use tapered rollers as rolling bodies. Using tapered rollers increases the bearing’s capacity to support high axle loads and lateral acceleration. With the help of the FE calculation method and taking into consideration the surrounding design, a for-life lubricated tapered roller bearing unit (maintenance-free) with a defined bearing preload was designed. Including for example: • One 1T Generation wheel bearing • Compact bearing unit with double-row tapered roller bearings inversely fitted • Snap ring • Nut 8 FAG WheelSet 2nd Generation Angular Contact Ball Bearing FAG WheelSet 2nd Generation Wheel bearings of the 2nd generation are compact bearing units, manufactured by FAG with a defined and preset bearing clearance, for-life lubrication (no maintenance) and sealing. They combine the value for money of the 1st Generation with the advantages of an integrated wheel flange for attaching the brake disc and wheel rim. The wheel bearing unit is secured on the wheel mount with an innovative snap ring that also provides for the axial tension on the bearing outer ring. Including for example: • Compact bearing unit with double-row angular contact bearing • Nut Advantages: • Defined and preset bearing clearance • Integration of the wheel flange • Innovative snap ring ensuring axial tension on the bearing outer ring and attachment of the bearing to the wheel mount • Flange with internal gearing for the driven wheels • Orbitally formed unit, completely pre-adjusted • Possible integration of a multipole encoder in the rubber seal, supporting ABS, ASR and ESP 9 FAG WheelSet 3rd Generation Angular Contact Ball Bearing Wheel bearings of the 3rd Generation are highly integrated units with a mounting flange for the brake disc, wheel and wheel mount that guarantee highest running accuracy. Integrated speed encoders provide the required signal for ABS/ESP suspension control. The bearing clamping force is applied and controlled by FAG via an orbitally formed shoulder. FAG WheelSet 3rd Generation Reduced total cost of mounting because of the doubleflange design. Consequently, reductions in function, comfort and overall bearing life caused by mounting influences are finally a thing of the past. Advantages: • Integrated wheel speed sensor controls ABS, ASR and ESPPlus • For-life lubrication and sealing • High-precision brake disc and wheel guidance • Reduced installation complexity through double-flange design • Bearing clamping force is applied in a controlled manner via the orbitally formed shoulder 10 Including for example: • Compact bearing unit with a double-row angular contact ball bearing • 1 self-locking nut • 3 screws for fitting to wheel mount • 1 grease cap FAG WheelSet with Axial Splines In conventional systems, the drive torque is transferred between the wheel bearing and the axle journal by means of radial splines, which have a certain amount of clearance. Loads that occur in day-to-day driving conditions mean that there is a risk that the assembly constantly loosens way beyond the normal mounting clearance, resulting in everything from reduction in comfort and unpleasant noises right up to the failure of the bearing. FAG WheelSet with Axial Splines However, the new FAG wheel bearing module with axial splines is appealing due to simple mounting methods. The self-centering axial gear teeth are placed on the axle journal and fixed in placed by means of the central screw in the assembly. The bearing remains completely clearance-free in the gear teeth during operation. Advantages: • 10% weight reduction in comparison with conventional wheel bearings, in total more than a kilogram overall for all four wheels on the vehicle • Reduction in fuel consumption • Reduction in damaging CO2 emissions • Easier installation in the driving shaft • Considerably simplified mounting procedures • Free-of-play bearing operation for the entire life of the part • 50% more torque transmission compared with radial splines due to the larger diameter of the pitch circle of the gear teeth. Including for example: • Consolidated wheel bearing module • Central screw • 4 screws for fitting to wheel mount 11 Wheel bearing with integrated ABS pulse generator ring There is a recent trend in the automotive industry for the increased use of wheel bearings designed with a magnetic ABS pulse generator ring. This applies to double-row cylindrical wheel bearings with preset clearances as well as wheel hubs with integrated bearings. The magnetic pulse generator ring takes over the function of the ABS sensor ring, normally mounted on the wheel hub or drive shaft joint. Fig. 1: Wheel hub with ABS sensor bearing (left) and conventional ABS sensor ring (right) In double-row cylindrical wheel bearings, the magnetic ring is an integral part of the radial seal. The magnetic ring may however be fitted on the outside of wheel hubs with integrated bearings. The pulse generator ring is made of a ferromagnetic sintered material with alternating polarity. S Fig. 2: ABS sensor pulse generator ring Fig. 3: Signal curve for inductive pickup signal The signals are processed using an inductive pickup (two-pole) or a ‚Hall generator‘ (three-pole). In either 12 Note When replacing a double-row cylindrical wheel bearing with pulse generator ring integrated in the radial seal it is critical to mount the bearing in the right direction. Failure to do so can impair the functioning of dynamic drive control systems such as ABS, ESP etc. Always observe the fitting instructions included in the packaging of the respective wheel bearing units. If unsure, use the FAG detector card to determine the correct mounting direction of the bearing. The detector card will help you to identify the pulse generator ring integrated in the bearing and consequently to determine the correct mounting direction. S N S N N S N case, a signal is generated showing a frequency which is proportional to the wheel speed. This serves as an input signal for the ABS/ESP/ASR control units.
