Suspended Ceiling Grid
Systems and Accessories
Knauf AMF has for decades been one of the leading manufacturers of
suspended Ceiling systems in Europe. Knauf AMF develops, manufactures and
distributes innovative ceiling systems, Made in Germany.
Through the acquisition of the succesful and proven DONN® DX® technology
and the associated renowned brand name, Knauf AMF has further strengthened
its competitive position.
With more skills, greater system compatibility, wider availability and even better
service and advice, we provide powerful and certified solutions to specialist
contractors, Architects & Distribution.
You are always ahead with Knauf AMF ceilings solutions!
The modified DX3® technology with the
patented rib design results in greater rigidity
of the featured main runners and cross tees.
The tees are more dimensionally stable
and give a greater torsional strength to the
profile and reduce “twist” which leads to
an easier and therefore faster installation
as well as a stable and secure ceiling
substructure.
4
The locked end-splice detail is integral to
the design, allowing an accurate, simple
and secure push fit connection, even from a
distance. The double-end detail bead ensures
high strength of the connection points.
The patented DX clip installs with the same
self-aligning “stab-in” action but now with
an even louder “click”, offering immediate
audible reassurance that the cross tee is
securely inserted. Additionally, DX cross
tees will cantilever during installation,
enabling insertion from above and below the
ceiling plane – ideal for tight and cramped
conditions.
Other advantages of the DX3® product
innovation include:
- The 3 rib design is easier to cut, leading to
significant savings in time and effort over
the working day.
- The overall weight of each main runner
carton is reduced by 20% to 20 kg, making
it easier for one man to carry and reducing
the chance of injury. The increased rigidity
of the main runners also makes the cartons
easier to handle.

Installation instructions
The appearance of a suspended acoustical ceiling is dependent on the materials used as well as the quality of the installation. Knauf
AMF manufactures building products that meet EN 13964 and comply with current quality standards. The installation of the ceiling
3200
1200
400
600
450
™
must also comply with EN 13964 assuring proper level and secure attachment as prescribed.
Very good installation conditions are priority on site for successful installation of a suspended ceiling. The temperature at the site
should be between 14° and 25° C, at a relative humidity less than 75%. Store materials in a protected area and have mineral tiles
in particular stored on site for at least 3 days prior to installation.
3900
š
›
Step 1
The planning and measuring of the ceiling are the first key factors in the installation process. The Planning begins with the drawing
of the room showing all walls including wall openings and existing columns. Note the direction in which for example beams or joists
run or if architectural drawings necessitate working in one direction or another. Determine the lines for main runners and cross tees
in such a way that the tiles that abut the wall are at least half a tile (300mm).
™ Mainrunner
š Cross tee 1200 mm
› Cross tee 600 mm
Step 2
Mark the desired ceiling height (maintaining at least 70mm clearance below the lowest duct, pipe or beam.) Measure and mark the
walls at all corners above the installation level (=-add the height of the wall angle to the desired ceiling height.) Snap a chalk line
and test for level.
pre-punched holes
to be aligned
lk
ha
C
Measuring down from joists or up from the floor is not recommended, since neither may be
level. Install wall angle with top edge of angle at the chalk line, spacing appropriate fixings
450mm o.c. or closer. Cut and mitre outside and inside angles at 45°, fitting them snugly
together. Alternatively, simply butt angles at corner (as in system illustration).
e
lin
Step 3
To confirm level, stretch a string until taut along the positions which the main tee will occupy. Inserting a nail between the wall and
the wall angle at marked locations serves as a good anchor for this purpose. Stretch another string across the room where the first
row of cross tees will be located. This identifies where the first prepunched slots need to fall. Check to be sure the cross tee string
is at 90° to the main tee string via the 3-4-5 method. Install the hangers at 1200mm o.c. above the lines of the main runners. Fix
to the structure above using appropriate plugs, screws or other devices.
Position of the hangers
42
Step 4
Attach the main runners to the hangers. In each row, trim the main tee so that the cross-tee slot will line up with the cross-tee
string. Mount main tees, resting the cut end of the main tee on the wall angle. The cut end of the main runner should be about 5mm
away from the wall.
Step 5
Install cross tees, assuring that they are adequately connected to main tees (they „click“ in place when properly seated). Where two
cross tees intersect in the same slot, insert second cross-tee end to the left of the first. Where a cross-tee is installed without an
opposing cross-tee, a nail should be slipped into the opening of the cross-tee clip to maintain the pull-out value for the cross-tee.
Step 6
Lay in panels, beginning at one comer and completing row by row. Tilt each panel up through the opening and lower it to rest squarely
on all four tees
Step 7
Removal as easy as installation. Just grasp the main tee with one thumb under the main tee-cross tee connection and, pushing up
with the thumb, give the main tee a quick, short twist. That‘s all it takes - no tools needed. The strong clip means that the grid can
be reinstalled straightaway with no tearing or bending of the clip.
Step 8
Main tee demounting Using a straight shearing motion, push with your left hand and pull with your right hand to disconnect the main
runner splice. Note: do not twist the splice during the removal procedure.
Further Installation tips
1. Install suspension wires and the mounting of lighting fixtures before you begin with the installation of the substructure.
2. Cut mineral fibre panels with utility knife and straight edge, cutting the face first.
Cut panels should be at least 15mm larger than the opening. (Applies to 24 mm wide table grid).
3. Cut tees with aviation snips, first the stem and then the flanges.
4. To cut a perimeter tile for a ceiling system with recessed edge use a utility knife and straight edge.
Start by marking and cutting the face of the ceiling tile cutting to a depth equal to the factory formed
rebate edge. Thereafter cut into the edge of the tile so that all four sides of the tile rest level on the ceiling grid.
43
Technical details
Ceiling suspension systems are one
of the interior elements in building
construction where architects can make
their design ideas happen. However
beautiful and elegant modern ceilings
can be, they also need to meet specific
technical requirements.
The most important are: fire protection,
acoustical behaviour, humidity/moisture
resistance, impact resistance, load
bearing capacity and last, but not least,
colour and light reflection.
1 Fire Protection
For requirements for fire protection
specific features and criteria are of
great importance.
1.1 Fire Protection
The material class is the classification of building materials related to
the fire behavior according to EN
13501-1. In assessing the material class the spread of fire within a
room (e.g. a habitable room or for
an escape route) and the behavior of
the building material during the fire
will be assessed. The building material is marked by the letters A, B, C,
D and E.
Criteria of building materials are:
- Spread of flame / ignitability
- Heat release and smoke production
- Burning droplets
All ceiling products from Knauf AMF
are rated worldwide in terms of
combustibility. This is based on testing to all respective national valid
test methods. Due to the worldwide
supply, Knauf AMF offer the most
frequently tested products for lightweight suspended ceilings.
the state building regulations of the individual states regulate
the requirements for fire protection in buildings Reference
should be made to the most recent edition of the local Building
Regulations or codes and consideration must also be given
to specific regulations relating to different types of buildings.
For example, in the UK buildings in the Healthcare field are
required to comply with their own specific codes known as
Health Technical Memorandums or Health Building Notes.
Ceilings must be able to achieve the periods of fire resistance
specified in Health Technical Memorandum 05-02 when
subjected to tests in accordance with BS 476 Parts 20–23.
1.2 Fire resistance classification
Fire resistance classes are used to grade components
with respect to their resistance to fire exposure. With the
assessment of the fire resistance classes according to EN
13501 - 2 the evaluation of the fire transition between two
adjacent rooms is the focus. Knauf AMF Ceiling products as
part of the „overall ceiling assembly“ can contribute to the
protection of the room above the ceiling. With the use of
suspended ceiling the protective component consists of floor
structure + suspended ceiling or suspended ceiling + roof.
When tested in accordance with EN requirements the complete
construction is evaluated. The marking of a fire resistance
rating occurs in case of ceiling structures (as well as loadbearing walls, columns, beams and stairs) with the capital
letter REI which identifies the component and numbers (30,
60, 90, 120 and 180) that describe the minimum resistance
of the component (in minutes) with respect to the fire in the fire
test.
2 Acoustics
Acoustics is the science of sound. Sound, in the true sense,
is defined as mechanical vibrations and waves and as such a
form of energy which can be measured. However, the sound
is also a subjective awareness. The best example of the
subjective awareness is the sound of music. What some would
consider an irritating noise is a soothing sound for others.
A balanced room acoustics alongside other environmental
influences such as light and temperature is an important
factor of an optimal living and working environment. As a
manufacturer of acoustical ceilings systems Knauf AMF
provides products to builders and architects to create an
optimal acoustical environment in a room. To ensure this, two
criteria are required to indicate the sound in a building (used in
the design of products):
The following parameters are measured and evaluated during
a fire resistance test:
- Load capacity R of the ceiling
(claiming the ceiling with maximum load)
- Passage of fire E
- Temperature increase I on the unexposed face of
construction (maximum 140 K are allowed)
A rating of e.g. 90 means that a component has a fire resistance period of 90 minutes. Knauf AMF provides test certificates on demand for evidence of fire resistance class of
its products. In addition to the test certificates for ceiling assemblies Knauf AMF has tests of independent fire protection
elements available.
2.1 Sound absorption _W and NRC
(Noise Reduction Coefficient)
_W or NRC give the sound absorption properties of a ceiling
or ceiling tile. The absorbent properties of a ceiling (tile) are
reproduced with the help of the absorption coefficient _S
which is between 0 (no absorption) to 1 (complete absorption).
Since no material can absorb the sound evenly across all
frequencies, tests are performed at 125, 250, 500, 1000,
2000 and 4000 Hz. The sound absorption coefficient _W or
the NRC is a weighted average of the absorption coefficient
of the entire tested range. The use of the right materials for
sound absorption reduces annoying reverberation effects
and improves the communication in the room itself (see also
2.3.) Too much absorption, however, can quickly result in a
„dead space“ in which all sounds are swallowed and hearing
is impossible since no sound waves are reflected. Inadequate
1.3 Other criteria
Some materials spread toxic gases when burning or inflamed.
In general they may not be used as structural or integral
parts of a building. It is possible that contents of rooms in a
building may contain such materials, brought in by occupants.
However, Knauf AMF ceiling systems, factory or pre-painted
elements, do not emit hazardous fumes and thus present no
risk for occupants or fire fighters. The fire safety legislation
in Europe relating to Building material classification and fire
resistance is in national hands. In addition to the EN 13501

absorption reflects too many sound waves causing to be
bothersome. Depending on the room size and room facilities,
the reverberation time can be determined and the appropriate
absorption coefficient can be identified using the Sabinesian
formula. Because of only marginal differences in the calculation
_W and NRC values are almost identical. The sound absorption
is governed by the international standards ISO 20354 and ISO
11654. These standards find recognition in both European as
well as national standards in most countries.
2.2 Attenuation Dn,c,w bzw. Dn,f,w
If sound is absorbed in an area (see 2.1.) it must remain
somewhere. In buildings unabsorbed portions of the sound
travel in most cases from room to room and cause unwanted
interference. Ceiling systems have therefore the task not
only to ensure a balanced sound absorption in a room, but
also to minimize the transfer of sound from one room to the
other via the ceiling cavity. This is known as the function of
the longitudinal sound insulation. The sound attenuation can
be simplified as a measure of insulation for the transmission
of sound from room to room. The reduction of the sound
level is expressed in decibels (dB). The sound attenuation
Dn,c,w is regulated in the European standard EN 20140-9
(Dn,f,w in EN ISO 10848) and in most European countries
recognized as binding at the same time.
3. Moisture resistance
DONN® Suspended ceiling systems were developed for
indoor installation where a maximum relative humidity of 90%
at 30°C should not be exceeded. Knauf AMF Ceiling systems
are able to withstand more extreme conditions than this so
long as these only occur occasionally. In general, higher
levels of relative humidity in a room require the use of a
corrosion resistant construction incorporating the DONN® DX KB
system. For severe environments where chemicals are
used, or in outdoor applications please consult our Technical
Department.
Although DONN® ceiling suspension grids will not deflect as a
result of high humidity you should be aware that a relative
humidity over 90% could result in a normal mineral fibre
ceiling tile absorbing moisture from the air. The resultant
additional weight of the tile, up to 3.0 kg/m² should be
considered when planning the design and installation of
the grid system. DONN® ceiling suspension systems meet
the requirements of EN 13964, classification of ceiling exposure
as Class B. The corrosion protected system DONN® DX KB
meets the requirements of EN 13964, classification of ceiling
exposure as Class C. For questions about accordance with
other standards please contact our Technical Department.
4. Ball impact resistant
Ball impact resistant ceilings are mainly used in indoor Sports
facilites. This is mainly a matter to absorb the impact of
sports equipment (e.g. balls) on the ceiling. The only current
regulation, which is also accepted all over Europe, is the DIN
18032. Although the clip connecting of our DX substructures
is ideal for such applications. Knauf AMF currently has no
relevant test certificates.
5. Load capacity
In connection with any system that is listed in this catalog you
will find a load table for standard modules. The values from
the tables result from a combination of practical tests and
theoretical calculations. The load capacity of a ceiling structure
is limited by two main factors: the deflection due to the weight
and the twisting of the substructure during installation. For the
tables, the requirements of EN 13964 have been considered.
This means an allowable deflection of L/500. An exception is
the VIC Long Span system where the limit is set at L/300. All
calculations indicate the extreme case, thus the deflections
are below the maximum that is permitted. For other structures,
other than described in this catalog, please contact our
Technical Department.
6. Colour, gloss and light reflection
6.1 Colour
The most commonly used colour determination is done by a
RAL number. The entire RAL range includes approximately
9000 predefined colours. The Knauf AMF ceilings system
default colour for the ceiling substructure can however
not exactly be described by any RAL colour. All colours are
currently measured in accordance with ISO 7724 worldwide.
The norm defines LAB values, where „L“ covers the spectrum
dark / light (black-white), „A“ the spectrum red-green and „B“
blue-yellow. Each colour can be defined by using this system.
The newer NCS (Natural Colour System), which receives more
and more recognition among paint manufacturers, defines the
colours by the LAB format. The colour difference is expressed
as a direct relation to the measured colour with the original
pattern - the deviation of all three spectrums is included.
The value of the deviation is called Delta E and should not be
greater than 1.
awareness is reflected in the
development and distribution of
products. Negative impacts on the
environment are minimized through
waste reduction, conservation of
natural resources and the recycling of
materials. Knauf AMF ceiling systems
also produces products that are
environmentally sound and safe and
efficient if they are applied according
to the specifications. On average, the
recycling percentage of our ceiling
substructures and their packaging
(information from year 2000) lies by:
- Steel: +/– 25%
- Aluminium: over 50%
- Cardboard: over 75%
In addition, we apply great
importance to an environmentally
friendly production and recycle the
total waste wherever possible. Also
you as our valued customer can help
in protecting the environment by
making sure that residual material of
steel and aluminum, as well as the
packaging are properly fed to the
recycling process.
6.2 Gloss level
The gloss level defines how shiny or dull a colour is. The
spectrum ranges from 1 (extremely dull) to 100 (extremely
mirror). The standard white of DONN® grid systems lies in
its gloss level between 10 and 15, DONN® grid systems are
relatively dull. Other colours have different levels of gloss
and can range from glossy 70 to a low gloss level of 8 in
black. Please contact our Technical Department for further
information.
6.3 Light reflection
Since light is reflected from any object (in fact we see the
reflection, not the object) reflection can be tested. The range
of light reflectance ranges from 0% (no reflection) to 100%
(total reflection). The white standard ceiling grid from Knauf
AMF have a light reflection of +/– 85%. Ask our Technical
department for more information.
7. Quality and international standards
All Knauf AMF production plants for ceiling substructure in
Europe are certified to ISO 9001 or ISO 9002 and are currently
working on certification to the new standard ISO 9000. Knauf
AMF produced products that meet or even exceed both –
technical requirements of local laws and the requirements of
the international product and building standards.
8. Environmental
As a manufacturer Knauf AMF recognizes the importance
and necessity of environmental protection. Our environmental

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
1. Load bearing capacity of ceiling systems
1.1 If the maximum permissable loads for a standard ceiling construction are to be exceeded how should the
ceiling be installed?
Two ways are evident from the load tables in the catalog:
Reduction of the distances between the main runners or decreasing the distances between the hangers. The smaller the
distance, the greater the load, which the main runners can
accommodate. If the Knauf AMF load tables do not provide
enough detail then please contact the Technical Department
of Knauf AMF directly.
1.2 What weight does the suspended ceiling construction
carry?
The load capacity depends on the distance of hangers, the
distance of main runners and of course the grid system itself.
For the most frequently used suspended ceiling systems,
main runners and hanger distances the information about the
capacity (weight) can be found in this brochure (please refer
back to load tables for each individual system).
1.3 What is the maximum weight for lighting fixtures that
can be installed in Knauf AMF Standard Ceilings systems? Are additional hangers required?
lt all depends on which grid system, which ceiling tile and what
light will be used. Precautionary, additional hangers can be
installed in case of doubt (no more than 150 mm from each
corner of the light fixture). Alternatively, the lighting fixtures
can be attached to the soffit independantly.
46
2. Fire protection ceilings
2.1 Are hold down clips required?
Hold-down clips are recommended for all fire rated ceiling
installations. Whilst tests can be and are passed without the
use of clips, what can be achieved under laboratory conditions
and what actually happens in a real fire are completely
different. Hold-down clips will provide resistance to the
air pressures that will be present in the event of a fire thus
maintaining an unbroken membrane.
2.2 What is the recommended ceiling layout for a particular
structural soffit?
Make sure that a copy of the relevant fire test certificate(s) is
obtained BEFORE you start with the installation, as any construction depending on the sub-structure, the ceiling tile and
the structure of the soffit are assessed differently.
2.3 How large must the ceiling cavity be between the soffit
and the suspended ceiling?
The depth of the ceiling cavity is an indispensable and important
value for fire protection ceilings. Before commencing the
installation the test certificate should be taken into account, it
indicates the minimum suspension height.
2.4 Can fire protection ceilings be equipped with insulation
on the back?
No. The use of insulation on a fire protection ceiling worsens
its performance rather than improving. Insulations are required
for some constructions in order to create an independent fire
control unit (F30 lower ceiling only). Stick to the information in
the certificate. Insulation is only used when specified in the test report.
2.5 How do you protect the ceiling when services are
installed?
Light fittings and other services that cause a break in the
integrity of the ceiling membrane must be protected to
maintain the integrity. It is usual to provide some kind of a
proprietary hood or box of some description to cover the
services unit. These must be tested to the same standard
and in a similar construction in order to be approved. If too
many services are introduced into the ceiling system then it
will become very difficult to maintain the integrity and other
means of providing fire protection should be sought.
2.6 Can DONN grid be used with a competitor’s tile to
achieve a certain fire rating?
Testing with competitors’ products has confirmed that grid and
tiles from different manufacturers can be mixed to provide a
fire rated construction. This is generally termed ‘Mix and
Match’. Care must be taken however as ‘Mix and Match’ is
largely theory based upon selected product tests. Usually it is
not possible to provide specific fire test reports for the exact
combination so it is vitally important that the relevant authority
grants approval for the mix and match ceiling prior to
installation. It may be necessary to obtain some kind of
assessment from the fire test laboratory to confirm suitability
of the mix and match combination but this must be done with
the permission of both suppliers involved.
3. Acoustics, lighting & color
3.1 How does it affect the sound absorption when ceiling
tiles are replaced with lighting fixtures?
Under the assumption that lighting fixtures do not have an
absorption effect (in the worst case) the degree of sound
absorption decreases with the proportionate area taken by
the lighting fixtures. Taking into account that the lighting takes
in general about 10% of the entire ceiling area the sound
absorption reduces by more than 10%.
3.2 Although I ordered the substructure and the ceiling
tiles in standard white, the ceiling seems to have a
different colour. How is that possible?
Probably the colour of the floor or walls is not white. If the floor
and walls have a uniform colour then this colour reflects on the
ceiling again and creates the impression that the ceiling is not
white.
3.3 The same RAL colours have been used for all elements
in the ceiling. The elements, however show different
shades of white. How is that possible?
It is very difficult to find the precise matching colours. A
standard deviation of 6E ) 1, however is acceptable. In most
color palettes the legal deviation is smaller than the colour
deviation which a human eye sees. In some white areas the
human eye is however very sensitive and can detect a colour
difference of 6E 5 0.3. Colour differences can also occur due
to gloss, light reflection and/or base material on which the
colour has been applied.
4. Miscellaneous
4.1 What is the maximum suspension height with galvanized suspension wires?
This is dependent upon the ability of the fixer to pre-straighten
the wire efficiently without causing undue stress in the steel.
As a rule of thumb, 4-5 m should be considered the maximum
effective depth.
4.2 How should both the grid and tile be finished at the
perimeter to suit certain edge details?
Please refer to the edge detail options shown in this brochure.
There are many combinations and features that can be
achieved using different materials and trims.
4.3 What is the maximum splay on 2 mm galvanised wire
supporting a suspended ceiling grid?
Hangers should, wherever possible, be maintained in a vertical
position. If it is necessary to splay a hanger for any reason, this
should be kept to a maximum of 15° from vertical and must
always run in the direction of the main runner.
4.4 What are the recommendations for suspending a
corrosion resistant ceiling?
Corrosion resistant grids must be suspended using the
corrosion resistant perimeter trim as a rigid angle suspension.
This is because the trim is treated with the same protection
as the rest of the grid. All fixings should be roofing quality
galvanised steel. The fixing centres of the main runners and
5. Maintenance
5.1 How can I clean the substructure?
Remove the ceiling tiles and clean the substructure with
a non-corrosive, commercial detergent. Please contact
Customer Services to obtain our full cleaning and maintenance
recommendations
5.2 Do I need a tool to dismantle the DONN® DX® grid
systems?
No. DONN® DX® grid systems are so designed that they can
be quickly disassembled by using a simple technique without
tools (refer back to step 7 on page 39 in this brochure).
hangers should be considered to suit the tile being installed.
Certain tiles will absorb moisture in high humidity environments
and thus will increase in weight as a result. The grid must be
able to support the maximum potential weight of the tile, which
should be determined before installation.
4.5 How can a cross tee be connected to the grid off
module?
Knauf AMF provides a range of brackets, e.g. DB3 that can
be used to connect tees off module. For more details please
contact Knauf AMF Customer Service.
4.6 What hold down clips should be used for various ceiling
thicknesses?
Knauf AMF offers a range of hold down clips for different
ceiling thicknesses and applications. Please refer to our current
catalog for more information.
4.7 How do I install a partition to the ceiling substructure?
– When using DONN® DP bandrasters, it is possible to screw
the lightweight partition directly to the profiles (see page 31).
– When using DONN® DX® Fineline system, use a M6 „T“
screw and insert in the groove of the DONN® DX® Fineline
profile (see page 13).
Brace the grid construction with additional hangers (at a 45°
angle).
4.8 How do I install a ceiling with inclination?
If the inclination is less than 15°, the ceiling will be installed
exactly the same way as the standard system. If the inclination
is greater than 15°, install the main runners in the direction of
inclination. Secure the main runners with rigid hangers (e.g. wall
angle) which will be fixed with a self drilling screw or nut and bolt
fixing on the substructure. If the angle of inclination is greater
than 30°, please contact the Knauf AMF Technical Department.
