RoHS Compliance
Restriction of Hazardous Substances
May 2010
Overview
Cognex fully supports enhancing the global environment by promoting a reduction in the use of hazardous
substances. We recognize that conservation of the global environment is an important issue that requires
attention in all our manufacturing and service activities.
Cognex reinforces an environmentally conscious policy by meeting global requirements for reduction of
hazardous materials and by maintaining a supply chain that is equally committed to this goal. In developing
our supply chain, we will consider the environment along side other key factors such as quality, performance
and price. Cognex will document and share this policy to reflect continuous commitment to our environmental
goals.
Although Cognex defines its products as outside the scope of the EU Directive on the Restriction of
Hazardous Substances (RoHS), our plan is to achieve RoHS compliance on the products defined in this
policy.
The following are the key elements of Cognex’s system for achieving environmental compliance:
(1)
Establish the Cognex philosophy, policy and objective for the reduction of hazardous substances, as
documented here.
(2)
Establish the organization responsible for promoting and implementing the program to reduce
hazardous substances including a compliance structure with defined responsibilities.
(3)
Ensure that appropriate controls are in place to meet the defined regulations (Example: component
RoHS certification linked to the Cognex design data base). Implement required training and
compliance audits to reinforce these controls.
(4)
Ensure that Cognex provides information to its business partners about its reduction of hazardous
materials.

The EU RoHS Directive requires the elimination of the following materials from a wide variety of product
categories by July 1, 2006.
- Lead
- Mercury
- Hexavalent chromium
- Cadmium
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated Diphenyls (PBDE)
The EU Directive applies specifically to products manufactured or sold in the European Union. Individual
member countries are required to establish legislation to bring local regulations into congruence with the EU
Directive. Such regulations are in various stages of completion depending on the member country. Given
that Cognex is the leading global supplier in its markets and that Cognex is an advocate of sound
environmental policy, we are pursuing compliance for targeted products.
The scope of RoHS is defined by industry with several industries and products being exempt.
- Large household appliances
- Small household appliances
- IT/ Telecommunications
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting, household
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Toys, leisure and sports
- Medical devices (currently exempt from RoHS)
- Automatic dispensers
- Monitoring and control instruments (currently exempt from RoHS)
- Spare parts (currently exempt from RoHS)
Non-Compliant Products
Cognex will be unable to convert some of its products due to a lack of components that meet the RoHS
requirements or because products are at the end of their life cycle. If a product is not available in a RoHS
compliant configuration, Cognex will recommend alternative products that will meet RoHS requirements and
will assist customers in the development of transition plans.
Accessories
Cognex will also make available RoHS compliant accessories for each of the targeted product families. In the
case of third party accessories, RoHS compliance will be certified by the accessory manufacturer and copies
of certifications will be made available upon request
New Products and Projects
Cognex products, where development programs are started after July 2005, will be designed to be compliant
with RoHS. Exceptions for specific situations will be clearly noted in appropriate documentation. Where
products are designated as RoHS compliant, all supporting components, accessories and items contained in
kits will also be compliant and will be identified as such, if they fall within the scope of the RoHS EU Directive.
