Boone Co., Will Book B, p. 311, Will of Lawrence Sandford [#137/1] {10085}
“WILL OF LAWRENCE SANDFORD [#137/1]
I Lawrence Sandford of the county of Boone and state of Kentucky, being weak in body, but
sound in mind memory and understanding, and knowing the certainty of death and uncertainty of human life, and being desirous to make an equitable distribution of my estate. I do
make and ordain this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making null and
void all others heretofore made by me.
First. It is my will and desire that all my debts be paid as speedily as practicable, and that the
debts due me and the crop I now have on hand to the fund out of which my debts are to be
paid.
Secondly. It is my will and desire that my children shall all have an equal proportion of my estate, and that it be equally divided among them. After deducting from my son Robert's
[#1371] portion three hundred and eighty six dollars it being the estimate which I have put
upon the property already advanced to him, which is as follows "to wit" One black boy
named Guy at $300. - 2 cows & calves at $20. One half dozen chairs at $4. 12 head of sheep
at $12 - 2 beds-bedsteads and furniture at $50. And after deducting from the portion of
daughter Eliza Watts [#1372], seven hundred and seventy one dollars it being the estimate
which I have put upon the property already advanced to her, which is as follows (viz). One
black Boy named --------(name left blank) at $300. One Black girl named ---------(left blank)
at $300. One horse at $80 - 2 cows& calves at $25 - 12 head of sheep at $12 - six chairs at
$11 - 2 beds - bedsteads & furniture at $50 - and after advancing to and for the benefit of
each of my younger children a suffiencency to support and educate them at least as well as
those of my children who are already raised and educated, as my desire is for them all to be
well educated and brought up in a genteel and respectable manner.
Thirdly. It is my will and desire that all my Estate both real and personal be left with and continue in the possession of my beloved wife, and that she be at liberty to manage and control it
to the best advantage for the benefit of our children. And if at any time any one or more of
the negroes of my estate should become ungovernable or discover a disposition to runaway
my wife if she thinks it best is to be at liberty to sell or dispose of such to the best advantage
and appropriate the money to the use and benefit of my children. And if my beloved wife can
with convenience spare as much of my estate, it is my wish that whenever any one or all my
children should ariseto lawful age and get married that she would give them in property or
money as may best suit an amount equal in value to those to whom I have already made advances. And in the same manner to advance to my son Robert when convenient in property
or money and amount sufficient to make him equal with the amount advanced as here is
stated to my daughter Eliza Watts. And if at any time my beloved wife should wish to do so
she can make further division and distribution among my children, but in each and every case
it is my particular desire and request that she should be careful to keep a just account among
them, and have a just estimate of advance to any one of them and endeavor at all times to
keep the advances and accounts of all my children as near upon an equality as she nature of
the case will admit. And upon her death for each of my children or their decedent to be made
equal and ??? for an equal division and distribution to take place among them of all that is
remaining of my estate.
And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my beloved wife Permelia Sandford
[#137] as Executrix and my friends Robert Kirtley [#136] and Willis Graves as Executors to
the my last will and testament with directions that neither bond or security be required of
them nor either of them by the Court granting probate thereof but that they or either of them
be at liberty to act as such without. And that neither of them are ever to be held in any manner responsible for any more of my estate which has not come into the hands of the one so
charged But that each of them be charged only for such part as may come into their hands
individually. My intention and expectations is for the whole of my Estate at all times to remain with and in the possession of my wife and in that event the others are they to be responsible for more that actually come into their hands respectively - In testimony where of I do
hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this second day of August 1827.

“JOHN E. KIRTLEY [#11223], prison inspector, Eddyville, Ky., was born December 17, 1838,
in Henry County, Ky., and is the son of E. B. and Jennette (Montgomery) Kirtley. The father
was born in Ohio, April 10, 1809, and when sixteen years old, came to Woodford County,
Ky., and learned the trade of blacksmith. After learning his trade, he married and went to
Henry County, where he worked at his trade until 1854, when he moved his family to Buchanan County, Mo., and farmed until 1861; then moved to Columbia, central Missouri,
where he left his family and went to Virginia City, Montana. At the close of the war he returned to Buchanan County, where he owned a large tract of land, which he sold, and went to
Platte County, Mo., where he still resides. He had nine children, five now living: Anna, wife
of Dr. L. Watson, of Maryville, Mo.; John E., our subject; Jephtha at Maryville, Mo.; Sallie,
wife of Woodson Bryant, and Phillip R., in Buchanan County, Mo. The father has been a
deacon and member of the Baptist Church thirty-five years. His wife, who died April 10,
1877, was also a member of long standing. John E. was principally reared on a farm, and acquired a thorough education in the common schools. Being the eldest son, he managed the
home place for his father until the breaking out of the war, when, in 1861, he enlisted in the
Confederate service, under John A. Boyd, State guard of Missouri, as second-lieutenant of a
mounted infantry company, which took part in the skirmish at Lexington, Mo., and there captured Mulligan. After this battle, he was transferred to cavalry service, Cornell regiment;
then went South; was in the battle of Pea Ridge; then south to Van Buren, Ark., where he
was taken sick, and went to Jacksonport, Ark.; then returned to north Missouri for the purpose of recruiting; was captured and confined at St. Joseph for six weeks, and tried as a bushwhacker; was paroled after six weeks; ran off and came to Kentucky, where he remained until the close of the war. February 14, 1855, he married Maria Taylor, of Frankfort, Ky., a
daughter of William and Minorha (Luckett) Taylor. Her father ran, with Maj. B. Luckett, the
Mansion House at that place. After marriage, he farmed a year in Scott County, and then
went to Missouri and opened a feed and sale stable at St. Joseph, which he conducted for
eight months; thence went to Platte County, where he engaged in mercantile business for
fourteen months; then farmed for two years, and then returned to Kentucky, and took charge
of the chair factory and cooper shop at the penitentiary for seven years, and then, after the
death of Col. J. W. South, the lessee, he ran the factory one month in the interest of the State;
then made the race for deputy warden, and was defeated by one vote; then elected by the city
council of Frankfort, as city collector for a term of two years; then traveled in the interests of
the Kentucky River Mills until 1884, when he accepted his present position of prison inspector. Mr. Kirtley has three children, Lena R., Albert T. and Sallie T., all at home. Mr. and
Mrs. Kirtley and Lena are members of the Baptist Church, at Frankfort, in which he is a deacon. Politically he is a Democrat, and a member of the Masonic fraternity.”

Kentucky: A History of the State, ? Edition (Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 1885), Biography of John H. Wood [#21483] {20243}
“JOHN H. WOOD, a native of Muhlenberg County, was born May 4, 1846. His father, Zilman
Wood, was also a native Kentuckian, a farmer and a boatman. He died in 1858, aged sixty
years; his widow, Mary (Kirtley) Wood, of Muhlenberg County, still survives him, aged
fifty-nine years; she was born in 1826; her children were seven in number, four are living:
James W., Elias, Sarah E. and John H. After the death of his father, John H. remained with
his mother, and worked on the farm for her support, until after the close of the war in 1865.
On the 25th of October, of that year, he married Mattie B., a daughter of William H. and
Melissa C. Summons, of Muhlenberg County; she was born March 22, 1846. One daughter,
Ida, a young lady of seventeen, is their only child. Mr. Wood, in early life received a good
education. After marriage he bought 240 acres of land in the county of Muhlenberg, and
continued farming, in connection with the log and lumber trade, in which he has been very
successful. He is an energetic man of business; his farm and buildings are amoung the best
of this section; his dwelling, an excellently built frame, is the work of his own hands, he having acquired the carpenter and joiner's trader, which he followed duriing the Rebellion. Mr.
Wood is a Republican; he has no political aspirations. He is a member of the Baptist faith,
while his wife and daughter are members of the Methodist Church. Mr. Wood is an advocate
of the temperance cause, though his views on the subject are not severe.”
