2007.
The Destination ImagiNation® Program
A. The Destination ImagiNation® program has two major
Components:
1. Team Challenge (comprised of the Central Challenge and
Side Trips) and
2. Instant Challenge.
B. Both Components are designed to promote a single set of
Educational Goals,
1. Educational Goals are met in nearly identical ways.
2. In other words, Instant Challenge and the Team
Challenges are much more alike than they are different.
3. Review Handout.
C. The primary difference between the two is simply in the way
teams’ solutions are produced:
1. The Team Challenge is designed to allow teams a lengthy
preparation and development time, usually several
months, to produce their solutions.
2. Instant Challenge is designed to force teams to create
their solution in a very compressed time frame, usually
only a few minutes. Both require the teams to do
essentially the same thing, but using different strategies.
Team Challenge: participants work in teams of 2-7 for several
months to solve their Team Challenge. Refer to what was seen in
the Global Finals Video/DVD. The two components of the Team
Challenge are:
A. Central Challenge:
1. Purpose: Creative Problem Solving techniques and
teamwork developed over a long period of time (several
months).
2. Educational Focus of Challenge: The Challenges
undertaken by the team are academically based and
focused on one or more of the following areas: Technical
Design and Construction, Science and Theater Arts,
Playwriting, Architectural Design and Structural
Engineering, Improvisational Acting.
a. Review Challenge synopsis for current year
3. Each of the six Central Challenges involves a research
component.
4. Any of the six Central Challenges may involve an
improvisational component.
5. One or more of the six Challenges involves an

6. All Challenges include a focus on TEAMWORK!
B. Show selected portion of Video/DVD that shows a Central
Challenge
C. SIDE TRIPS
1. Purpose: To encourage participants to discover and
showcase their collective interests, strengths, abilities as a
team and as individuals, and allows them to develop that
showcase over a long period of time.
2. Educational Focus of Side Trips: Based on the educational
theory of multiple intelligences.
3. Allows teams total freedom to develop elements of their
own choosing.
4. Allows teams to highlight areas of strength that are not
brought forth in the Central Challenge requirements.
5. Allows/Encourages teams to recognize and make the most
of each individual’s abilities/interests.

Instant Challenge: the third part of the Equation
1. Purpose: To put team’s creative problem solving abilities,
creativity, and teamwork to the test in a short, time-driven
Challenge.
2. Educational Focus of Instant Challenge: The team’s use
of creative problem solving strategies, assessment and use
of available materials, and teamwork in an impromptu
situation.
3. Encourages teams to develop creative problem solving
and time management strategies, performance and

These Educational Goals are met through the two Components of the Program, the Team and Instant
Challenges, by requiring teams to develop and learn many useful lifelong skills. The major difference between
the two Components is not so much the nature of the Challenge itself but rather HOW MUCH TIME is available
in which to craft a solution. The Team Challenge, developed over months, allows for greater depth and detail.

Side Trip Specialties Inventory
STEP ONE: Individual Specialties Inventory
To all Team Members: Would you like to know what YOUR Specialties are? Would you like to know what
your TEAM’s Specialties are? If you have ever wondered what special skills, talents, and strengths you and your
teammates possess, this questionnaire might help you find out! There are three steps to this process.
STEP ONE:
STEP TWO:
STEP THREE:
Fill in the Individual Specialties Inventory.
Add up your score on the Individual Specialties Tally sheet.
Combine the scores of all team members on the Team Specialties Tally sheet and find
out what kinds of Specialties your team possesses. Your team can use that information
to help decide what to create for Side Trips.
A copy of this form should be provided to EACH team member, and each team member should fill it out
independently. Read the following statements and rate each one using the scale below as to how accurately it
applies to you!

How to Interpret the Scores when there are not clear-cut Specialties:
What if there are MANY clear-cut Specialties indicated?
It can happen that a team’s areas of strength are spread evenly across the entire list of Specialties. For
example, there may be approximately equal scores in the areas of Logic and Mathematics, Music,
Physical Movement, Visual and Spatial, and Words and Language. This does NOT mean that the team
has no clear-cut Specialties, but rather the team has SEVERAL areas of Specialty.
In that case, the team has even more options for its Side Trip creations!!
What if the team only seems to have ONE clear-cut Specialty?
This does not mean that the team members do not have many and diverse areas of strength, but rather, that
many team members lean toward a specific type of interest or skill area.
In that case, the team should look closely at some of the individual team member’s Specialties and see if
there are any areas that are clear Specialties for one or more team members, and brainstorm Side Trip
options from those areas of Specialties.
Remember: Teams do NOT have to base their Side Trips on the Specialties indicated in this Inventory. Teams
may choose to create Side Trips from ANY area of Specialty they choose.

Destination ImagiNation®
Instant Challenge
Advanced Level
Character DI-Bate
Challenge: Present a PERFORMANCE in which two of your team members pretend that
they are well-known CHARACTERS and participate in a debate and the rest of your team
acts as “judges” deciding who won the debate.
For the purpose of this Challenge, a debate is defined as two individuals responding to a yes/no
question that has no clear answer. One person presents reasons the answer is “yes;” the other presents
reasons the answer is “no.”
Time: You will have up to 3 minutes to use your IMAGINATION to choose 2 CHARACTERS and
plan your debate and up to 4 minutes to present your PERFORMANCE, in which each
CHARACTER has 1 minute to present arguments and the rest of the team acting as “judges” has 2
minutes to decide which CHARACTER won the debate.
The Scene: For this Challenge, two of your team members are to become different well known
CHARACTERS, either real or made-up. Your team should then choose ONE of the three questions on
the table in front of you and prepare for these two CHARACTERS to debate whether the answer to the
question is “yes” or “no.” After 3 minutes, each of the CHARACTERS will tell who they are and then
each will be given 1 minute to present a PERFORMANCE, where they try to convince the other team
members that their answer is correct. When debating, the two team members must stay in
CHARACTER! The rest of the team will then have 2 minutes to continue the PERFORMANCE,
acting as “judges” and deciding who won the debate. Five folding chairs will be available for your
team. In addition, two pieces of paper and two pencils will be available for your team to use as you
prepare your PERFORMANCE.
Scoring: You will receive up to
A. 15 points each (30 points maximum) for the creativity of the PERFORMANCE of each of
your CHARACTERS.
B. 40 points for the creativity of the PERFORMANCE of the judges.
C. 10 points for how convincing the “yes” and “no” arguments are.
D. 20 points for how well your team works together.
