Catalog Course Description: Provides students with an initial perspective of Education. Topics include: purposes of schooling
and schools; effective schools; diversity and its effects on schools, teachers, and students; societal and political issues
affecting schools; comparative education; curriculum issues and controversies; and technology's impact on schools and
schooling. Also, philosophical, legal, and financial issues facing today's schools; history of American education; and current
trends in education reform.
Additional Information: This class requires 30 hours of classroom experiential involvement in local public schools.

Intended Course Goals
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
1. List and discuss the foundations of education; its primary purposes; and its role in society.
2. Define a “good/effective” school and discuss the effects of diversity on schools, teachers, and
students, as well as Identify, discuss, and model effective teaching practices.
3. Compare and analyze education concerns and global trends in education and assess current
educational reform initiatives.
4. Define curriculum and discuss current curriculum controversies and access/utilized Arizona’s
Common Core Standards in a classroom setting.
5. Identify ethical and legal issues facing today’s educators.
6. Compare and contrast philosophical schools of thought regarding education and in a review of the
history of American education and create a personal philosophy of education.
