Questions and answers (Q&A)
Can the beams be affected by cross talk?
They can if they don’t feature the channel frequency selection that
provides four different channels to eliminate the risk of cross talk.
How easy is it to install and align a 100 or 200m beam set?
Long range beams can be difficult to align for one person without any
alignment tools. The OPTEX SL Quad beam series provides a number
of easy alignment tools to make it as simple as possible. All SL models
feature a vivid colour and a sniper view finder (magnifying) lens to help
the visual alignment. For the higher end models (SL-QDP and -QDM)
sound signals and LED features will also indicate how strong the signal is
between the transmitter and receiver.
Does an installer need any special tool to install the beams?
The only tool that the installer should need to install OPTEX beams is a
Voltmeter.
Are the beams affected by direct sunlight and reflection?
Sunlight and reflection can affect the performance of infrared beams. The
material used for OPTEX beams’ black cover is specifically designed to
reduce the effect of sunlight. The SL models feature two additional layers

of sun protection, including a light disturbance compensation circuit.
Can all OPTEX beams be installed in towers?
All OPTEX infrared beams can be installed in towers and OPTEX can
provide a full set of wall mounted or free standing towers from 50cm to
3m high.
If the beams are used for a lesser range than specified is this going
to be a problem?
It can cause signal saturation. However the risk of saturation can be
decreased drastically by using the variable power adjustment. This
feature is available for the SL-QDP and QDM models.
If the installer chooses the wire free model how long will the
battery last?
OPTEX specifies to use SAFT lithium batteries to get the best battery life
expectancy. On average, a transmitter and receiver beam with two
batteries each should work for four years before needing replacing. With
four batteries in each transmitter and receiver, the installer can expect
seven to eight years operation.
