Welding
Welding-
Welding is the science/art of blending two
metals together. Things that we use every day
have been welded together. Things that we use
everyday have been welded together like:
bicycles, dishwashers, and table legs. You can
find most of them in your kitchen. As a Girl
Scout Brownie you might want to learn about
Soldering is type of welding . Let ’s learn more
about soldering!
Propose The purpose for this badge is to teach girls that
girls can do anything that boys can do. Welding
is thought of as "mans work” but this badge
teaches you that you can do anything if you set
your mind too. It also makes you more creative.
Steps 1 To learn more about welding you can go to a
hacker space to meet a welder. You can also read
the Boy Scout manual.
Step 2 Find out what safety gear to use. Like a welding
helmet, gloves, closed toe shoes, long sleeve shirt
and, no skin showing.
Why a helmet?
Well little one when welding you will notice
that there is a bright light and it can damage
your eyes very quickly.
Why gloves?
Well the tool you use for welding can burn your
fingers if you do not have the proper hand wear.
Why no skin showing and closed toe shoes?
Well when welding Sparks fly off the pieces of
metal you are trying to put together, these sparks
are very hot and can burn your skin.
Step 3 To practice welding you can use a soldering
iron, get a kit at MakerShed.com if you’re
worried about the heat a way that is similar you
can stick two pieces of cardboard together with a
hot glue gun.
Scavenger Hunt! Go on a hunt with your troop to find every day
used items that have been welded.
If you have the supplies The supplies are:
-Soldering iron
-Soldering kit
-Rosin core solder
Prepare your space:
Find a place to place down the iron down were it
won’t burn something
Get stuff together
Let iron heat up
Solder:
Put metal close
Use soldering iron to heat up both parts
Touch it with the solder
If it’s hot enough solder will start to spread AKA
melt on surface
Add enough solder to fill the area your trying to
solder
Move solder and soldering iron away from
metals and let cool
If you are not comfortable with using iron then
use a glue gun.
ActivityMake a jewelry box
For this activity you need to go on a scavenger
hunt for small pieces of metal and old jewelry.
Materials:
A shoe box
Pieces of metal (jewelry or scrap metal)
A hot glue gun
Steps:
1. Get your shoe box
2. Collect your pieces of scraps metal
3. Get your hot glue gun and plug it in
4. After the hot glue gun heats up you can
either put the hot glue on the jewelry and put it
on the shoe box
or you can put the hot glue on the shoe box
then stick the jewelry on the shoe box.
5. Then wait for hot glue to dry
6. Then you have a beautiful jewelry box to
store all of your jewelry in.
Our inspiration Well we wanted to do welding for our silver
award project because, we thought it would be
fun and interesting to learn about, plus we
wanted to do something different. Our
problem at first was how are we going to allow
brownies too do it because of the whole age
thing. So, we came up with the hot glue idea
because it’s age appropriate and it’s just a easy
way of putting two things together without
anyone getting seriously hurt.
Which in our case is our activity (the jewelry
box). We decided to do the jewelry box
because, it was a cute idea that all brownies
would enjoy.
