Tasks
ABB is hiring a Substation Electro-Mechanical Engineer to
work for their Power Systems Division here in Raleigh, North
Carolina. This position will be responsible for the coordination
and execution of electro-mechanical engineering of
medium-voltage and high-voltage in both Air Insulated
Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
substation projects in the 34.5kV – 550kV range (future
possibility up to 800kV) with an emphasis on project safety,
cost, quality and reliability
You’ll work as part of our Power Systems team, which serves
utility, industrial, and commercial customers with products and
services to help distribute electricity efficiently and reliably,
maintain power quality, and control and manage electrical
networks.
Typical duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Provide engineering services during the proposal, design
and construction stages of Air Insultated Switchgear (AIS)
and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation projects with
strict adherence to the project contract.

• Project execution scheduling for electro-mechanical
engineering activities.
• Develop and review construction grade engineering
packages (single line diagrams, layout & section drawings,
raceway systems, grounding systems)
• Perform substation studies and analysis, including but not
limited to: Rigid bus analysis, grounding analysis, corona
calculations, illumination studies, lightning protection studies
and auxiliary power system studies.
• Develop equipment specifications. Review vendor
documents ensuring technical compliance.
• Notify the project lead engineer of any difficulties
encountered in the engineering and design that may
adversely impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule
of the ABB project deliverables, and provide
recommendations for solutions.
• Prepare, update and support the project execution
electro-mechanical engineering activities in the schedule with
emphasis on; On-time delivery, Quality of deliverables and
Project costs.
• Work with the project lead engineer to develop the Design
Criteria and the Document Deliverables list for the project.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
• Minimum of eight (8) years of substation design engineering
experience -or• Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
• Work with the project lead engineer to develop single line
diagrams, layout & section drawings, raceway systems,
grounding systems, station service and BOMs for the
substation design packages.
• Perform technical, cost savings, and constructability reviews
of electro-mechanical design packages from internal
engineering, outsourced sub-contractor engineering and
equipment factories.
• Perform studies and analysis, including but not limited to:
Rigid bus analysis, grounding analysis, corona calculations,
illumination studies, lightning protection studies and auxiliary
power system studies.
• Generate equipment specifications, monitor vendor technical
compliance and witness factory acceptance testing as
applicable.
• Utilize knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code
(NESC) to ensure that designs comply with the required
safety clearances.
• Utilize knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) to
ensure proper sizing of over-current protection for auxiliary
transformers and conductors, and to perform conduit fill
calculations.
• Adhere to ABB Power Systems - Substations quality
processes and document control procedures to ensure design
documents are complete and accurate.
• Provide construction, installation & commissioning support
Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
• Minimum of five (5) years of substation design engineering
experience -or• Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
-and• Minimum of three (3) years of substation design engineering
experience
Ideally this role could be filled at a Senior level if qualified
candidates meet the following:

-and• Minimum of six (6) years of substation design engineering
Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of applicable ANSI standards
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, AutoCAD &
MicroStation is a plus.
• Ability to travel up to 25% both domestic and international
