Align this with the concerns for the environment and throw in pinches of efficiency and cost savings and we conclude with a very challenging, year on year, improvement programme. The drive toward the expansion of the electrification of the rail networks, the connection improvements, the plans for dedicated High Speed Lines, the increase in rolling stock, the commitment to integrated transport systems have all added greater use. Increased passenger numbers, the return of the freight, whilst providing obvious benefits to the environment has returned a potential logistical nightmare. The management of this is made easier with the advances in technologies in power distribution, signalling, control and data communications. The electronic control of passenger services – reservations, the management of train connections, journey planners. The electronic control of freight services – marshalling, allocation, management of connections with other modes of transport, the production of electronic documentation and so on. We often forget the hidden enemy and the wide spread damage that comes with its overvoltage power surges. The easiest to understand are those derived from lightning strikes as they can be seen, however in a typical storm more than 10,000 strikes will not be visible but each can contain enough voltage to cause damage to sensitive equipment. Also, a direct lightning strike will cause the greatest visual damage but the proximity effects are unseen and devastating. However, operating faults occur far more frequently from within the system network, courtesy of motors, generators, electronic switching equipment, even the close proximity of AC and DC electric traction systems can cause the voltage and currents to increase to dangerous levels. The network and service operators must manage all the maintenance, communications, security and safety aspects within the systems. Therefore, protection of these systems from power surges becomes a top priority. Careful consideration needs to be made for each part of the system to be protected. The greater the information as to the normal operating and fault conditions the closer the solution will be to the optimum. PD Devices have continuously developed electrical surge protection products for use in many diverse applications. A major and unique strength is the in-house design and manufacture of varistors, a core element in surge protection. Having such an advantage of this built-in ability has meant that customer specific requirements are met in a cost-effective manner, while ensuring the performance and reliability of the end-products.The product range is for-ever expanding as customised designs are being developed to meet particular applications in the global rail network.
