Purpose The MEA wishes to connect with prospective university students to give them a sense of belonging to a respected discipline within the long standing engineering profession. To this end, the MEA is providing financial assistance to encourage secondary school students to pursue a career in municipal engineering. In promoting the training and education of undergraduate engineers, the Association will provide bursaries to persons proposing to attend any Ontario university (or equivalent) in an undergraduate engineering degree program. B. Eligibility • This award is open to all children and/or dependants of current, full-time, municipal employees in Ontario. • Must be an Ontario resident and Canadian citizen. • Student must have completed a secondary school program in Ontario and be eligible for graduation in the year of application. • Student must have been accepted into an undergraduate engineering program at an Ontario University (or equivalent) as a full-time student. • Interest in, and contribution to, their community through active participation in extra curricular activities at their school and/or in civic organizations. • Intend to pursue a career related to municipal engineering or public works as indicated or demonstrated through any applicable work experience and/or activities. • The awards are non-renewable and non-transferable. C. Entry Requirements • Application for the MEA Bursary must be made by means of the Entry Form (see attachment). • Each Entry Form must be completed in full and signed by the Applicant and Sponsor. • As part of the application, the MEA requires the student to submit a 500 word essay on a topic of public interest related to municipal engineering or public works. Essay entries must be submitted in one hard copy and one electronic copy (MS Word) form. • Each Entry Form must include a copy of the Acceptance Letter and/or any other supporting documents confirming enrolment/acceptance at an Ontario University (or equivalent) in an undergraduate engineering program as a full-time student. • Application must be submitted to the MEA offices by June 1 in the subject year. D. Selection Committee and Awards Criteria Applications will be assessed on the following general criteria: • A Selection Committee will be appointed each year consisting of a minimum of three (3) members of the current Board of Directors of the Association. • Judging will be based on: 1. Review of secondary school transcripts. 2. Evaluation of the 500-word essay based on the Applicant's interest in, knowledge of and future goals pertaining to municipal engineering or public works as a career, together with extra curricular activities and any applicable work experience. 3. Any letters of reference and/or recommendations received from secondary school teaching staff or other testimonials from community groups. • Final selection is made on an equal opportunity basis with the assessment scored on academic achievement, essay content and extra curricular activities and work experience. • The decision of the Association with respect to the bursary awards shall be final. • Applications will not be returned, they become property of MEA. MEA retains the rights to publish any essay submitted. Only those Applicants selected will be contacted. • Bursaries will be awarded by the MEA based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, to a secondary school student(s) with strong academic performance combined with demonstrated leadership and involvement in professional affairs and extra curricular activities, entering an accredited engineering program. The value of each bursary is $1,000 and up to ten (10) secondary school students will be selected from across the Province. A flyer is enclosed to assist you in publicizing this year's bursary (electronic version is available on request). The School Board, through Principals' office or Guidance Departments should make reasonable efforts to notify eligible students of the availability of the bursary including selection criteria and the application process. The MEA is a non-profit professional association representing the interests of municipal engineering through engineering and public works employees serving Ontario Municipalities. As such, the MEA values not only the technical excellence of our future municipal employees, but also their sensitivity to community needs and their public communication skills. This is reflected in the following selection criteria: 1) Open to children and/or dependants of current, full-time, municipal employees in Ontario. 2) Candidates must be in their final year of a secondary school program; 3) Candidates must have been granted conditional acceptance in an engineering program at an Ontario university; 4) Candidates must have demonstrated an interest in, and contribution to, their community through active participation in extra curricular activities at their high school and/or in civic organizations; and 5) Candidates will be required to demonstrate strong communication skills by submitting a 500 word essay on a topic of public interest related to municipal engineering or public works. Up to ten Bursary recipients will be selected from amongst all of Ontario's Secondary Schools. The application process is described below: Application Process 1) Candidates must make written application to the Municipal Engineers Association which includes the student's secondary school transcript; their curriculum vitae which is to cover extra curricular activities and contributions to community; and a 500 word essay on a topic of public interest related to municipal engineering or public works. 2) The bursary recipients shall be chosen by the Municipal Engineers Association based on the written submissions received by June 1, 2009. 3) The monetary award in the form of a $1,000 cheque will be forwarded to the recipients (unless directed otherwise by the school) upon the completion of the judging; and 4) The essays and other material submitted for the bursary award above will be reviewed by a committee selected by the MEA and all decisions of the committee are final. We would welcome an opportunity to have an MEA representative present the bursary certificate and the cheque to the successful candidate at an appropriate school function (e.g. graduation ceremony) as well as recognize the recipients, in name, at the MEA Annual Workshop and General Meeting.
