Safety Instructions • Read the safety and operating instructions before installing the product. • Retain safety and operating instructions for future reference. • Adhere to all warnings on the product, the packaging and in the operating instructions manual. • Follow all instructions for operation and use. • For protection against risk of fire and electric shock, install this product only in systems equipped with a three-wire grounding power plug (a plug with a third (grounding) pin). This plug 6 Preface will fit only into a grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace the outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding-type power plug. • Always secure the card so that all card securement pins are completely tightened as to provide continuous bonding between the card and the chassis. 7 Introduction Introduction Features Thank you for choosing Barco. The MICB-1340 is a high-performance PCI-Express based compression board optimized for medical imaging applications, intended to be installed in a server. By relieving the main CPU from the compression task, the MICB-1340 allows for compact, cost-effective yet high-performance image server systems. The MICB-1340 performs both lossless and lossy image compression for a large number of simultaneous users. If this is not the case, it may indicate that the board is working well, but not plugged into a suitable PCIe slot, and therefore not working at full performance. Please use PCIe x8 or x16 slot to achieve full performance. System requirements The system in which the MICB-1340 is installed, should have the following minimum requirements: • System memory: 2GB RAM • PCIe slot: 8-lane (x8) • Operating systems: • Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 4 (32 & 64 bit) • Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop (32 & 64 bit) • Windows XP SP2 (32 bit) • Windows XP SP1 (64 bit) • Windows Server 2003 R1 (32 & 64 bit) 10 Introduction • Windows Server 2008 (32 & 64 bit) • Windows Vista (32 & 64 bit) 11 Installation Installation Hardware installation This chapter will guide you through the physical installation of the MICB-1340 board. CAUTION – Wear a grounded, protective ESD strap when handling or during installation of the board. Electrostatic charges can damage the board. Alternatively, if you do not dispose of an ESD strap, make sure you ground yourself before working, by touching the exterior metal box of your computer's power supply (near the fan) before you unplug it. Handle the board by holding it by the metal bracket. However, be aware that Barco cannot be held responsible for possible damage from ESD discharges when no proper ESD protection was used. Which PCIe slot to use The MICB-1340 board is an 8-lane PCIe board. Consequently the recommended PCIe connector to use for optimum performance is an x8 or x16 PCIe slot. Figure 2 shows the three different types of PCIe slots. Be aware that physical x16 slots are sometimes wired as x8 slots, and physical x8 slots are sometimes wired as x4 slots. x16 slot x8 slot x1 slot Figure 2: Examples of PCIe slots 12 Installation Detailed installation The following instructions will take you step by step through the installation of the MICB-1340. 1. Turn off the computer, display(s), and other peripheral devices. 2. Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect all cables from the back of your computer. Caution – Wait approximately 20 seconds after unplugging the power cord before disconnecting a peripheral or removing a component from the motherboard to avoid possible damage to the motherboard. 3. Remove the computer cover. If necessary, consult your computer’s manual for help in removing the cover. 4. Locate the appropriate slot and, if necessary, remove the metal back-plate cover(s). Refer to the computer’s manual for more information. 5. Align the MICB-1340 board with the slot(s) and press it in firmly until the board is fully seated. 6. Screw in or fasten the board securely. Replace and secure the computer cover. 7. Reconnect any cables you have disconnected and plug in the computer’s power cord. 8. Turn on the display(s) and then your computer. WARNING - Turn on your display(s) before you turn on your computer. Failure to do so could damage your display(s). 9. Install the driver by following the instructions in the section “Driver and Software Installation” on page 11 of this manual. 13 Installation Software installation Installation in Windows Proceed as follows: 1. Log on to Windows with an administrator account. 2. When you start up the system after installing the board, the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. 3. Select the option No, not this time and click Next. The following window appears. 14 Installation 4. Select the option Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next. The following window appears. 5. Insert the CD-ROM that came with your MICB-1340 board and click Next. The system will automatically find the driver on the CD-ROM and install it. 6. On Windows Vista, Server 2008 and Server 2003 (64 bit), the following screen appears, indicating the driver is digitally signed. Click Yes to continue. 7. When done, the following screen appears, indicating the driver has been installed successfully. 15 Installation Note: You can verify that the board is installed correctly in the computer Device Manager (control panel > System > Hardware tab).
