Academic and Sports Excellence
ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
2015/16 Academic Year
“It was the best decision we’ve made to bring our daughter to
Newbridge. Their overall school priorities made sense for our daughter
and our family—enriched academics, small class sizes, and daily physical
activity. Newbridge is a family-focused school, where students are treated
and taught as individuals, this meant so much to us having come from a
class size of 28. Though it was a difficult decision to make, once we were
here for a few months, there is no comparison to what others are
offering.” S.P., grade 6 parent

The Newbridge Opportunity
Established in 2007, Newbridge Academy is an independent, private school
providing interactive, engaging and innovative academic and athletic programs
to students in Junior Primary through Grade Twelve.
Newbridge Academy has seen remarkable growth—starting with 28 students and
now having more than 200 enrolled. The growth can be attributed to the unique
approach the school has incorporating education and physical activity.
While meeting all of Nova Scotia Department of Education’s curriculum outcomes,
students are also challenged with enhanced curriculum from British Columbia,
Alberta and Ontario.
Newbridge Academy’s academic program engages students to think, create,
explore, play, and learn. Blending academic achievement, athletic excellence,
modern technologies, small class sizes, opportunities for leadership and
volunteerism, and, focusing on leading a healthy lifestyle helps students to
educate their whole self: mind, body, and spirit.
Why choose Newbridge?

Guiding Principles
There are three main aspects that set us apart from all
other private and public schools in Atlantic Canada –
student-centered learning approach, integrated
technology and advanced athletic training.
Student-Centered Learning Approach
Newbridge Academy understands that not all students
learn at the same pace or in the same way, therefore all
Newbridge students are afforded the opportunity to
achieve success through personalized education.
Personalized education provides individual learners with
the differentiated instruction and support they need to
achieve success—lessons and activities are designed to
meet the specific goals, interests, and abilities of each
student, allowing them to see their potential and reach
beyond the limits of a traditional classroom. This forward-thinking, common sense approach allows students, no matter
what their learning style, to move through the curriculum at a pace that suits their needs while building confidence that is
essential to maximizing their learning potential. Students who excel academically can move through the curriculum at a
quicker pace and be consistently challenged while others receive the help they deserve.
When students are challenged to work solving real-life problems, the whole world becomes a classroom. In project-based
learning, students work in groups to solve challenging problems that are authentic, curriculum-based, and often
cross-curricular. Learners decide how to approach a problem and what actions to pursue. They gather information from a
variety of sources and synthesize, analyze, and derive knowledge from it. Their learning is inherently valuable because it's
connected to something real and involves skills such as collaboration and reflection. In the end, this teaching method
focuses more on the process rather than just the product. Newbridge Academy incorporates the project-based learning
approach at all grade levels.
Integrated Technology
The technology afforded in our school is well beyond what any Atlantic Canadian school can offer. Top-of-the-line
technology is integrated into every classroom, through media-based activities, personal Apple iPads for our grade five to
high school students, digital textbooks, educational apps and online curriculum. Even our Junior Primary to grade four
classes regularly use their class set of Apple iPads. Teachers use the technology to enrich the curriculum and give students
up-to-date lessons on how to properly use the advances in technology.
Strategic partnerships: Apple Technologies, Edvance Software, Nelson Education, eBeam Education, ANGEL Online
Curriculum.
Professional Athletic Programming
Students at Newbridge Academy choose from various streams of athletic programing. All programs are designed and
taught by professional, qualified and experienced instructors. Students in our “Classic Program” receive a well-rounded
academic and athletic experience. Classic Program includes an hour of morning activity (sport-focused once they reach
grade three) and an hour of activity in the afternoon in our Active Living Class. Our young students (grades junior primary
to two) enjoy weekly swimming, dance, tennis, soccer and skating lessons on top of their afternoon activity. For our
high-level athletes, we offer specific programming in hockey, golf, tennis, baseball, soccer and dance.
Strategic partnerships: Daniel Nestor Tennis Centre, Gatorade Canada, Baseball Nova Scotia, Dance Zone, Empire
Goaltending, KMF Athletic Therapy, Tennis Canada, Hockey Nova Scotia, Farias Soccer Academy.

The Student Experience
Students at Newbridge Academy experience education unlike any other in Nova
Scotia. High-level and hands-on academic learning, combined with daily physical
activity and leading technologies make for enjoyable days for every student, at
every level.
Our small class sizes and family-focused school means that every student has a
voice and every family feels apart of a community. Students receive
increased and individualized attention in the classroom and are known by every
teacher and administrator in the school. Teachers are able to provide students
with the challenges they need and are able to create a fun and safe learning
environment. If you walk by any one of our classrooms, you will often see
Newbridge teachers moving around the room, engaging with students, rather
than simply lecturing at the front of the room. We take our classrooms where
they need to go, whether it be to a local river to catch specimens, a grocery store
for nutrition education, or the pool deck to teach aquatic life saving skills.
The technology afforded in our school is well beyond what any Atlantic Canadian
schools can offer. We believe that students need to develop strong critical thinking
skills and be skilled users/managers of technology to take their success into their
futures. Therefore, every classroom is equipped with top-of-the-line technologies
and programs, appropriate to age level. All of our students have access to their
own personal technology, such as iPad's. Using their vast knowledge and skill with
technology, students experience curriculum through media-based activities, digital
textbooks, online curriculum organizers and our eBeam and Mimio interactive
whiteboards.
Leadership skills become natural for our students as they interact with the
Headstart™ Buddy program every week, volunteer in the community and
extracurricular activities, as well as applying critical thinking skills to the
project-based assessments in the classroom.
Newbridge Academy students enjoy coming to school. Every day, we continue to
find new, fun, and engaging ways of promoting learning and healthy lifestyles for
our students.
Students discover the ease and excitement of learning when there is
increased opportunities for teacher-student interaction and hands-on
teaching methods; they appreciate the natural flow of daily school routines
when academics is combined with physical activity and life leadership skills;
they are able to apply their knowledge of technology and build crucial
critical thinking skills that will support their goals in the future; and, they
gain the comfort and sense of belonging that comes with being a part of a
small, community- and family-focused school.

Technology @ Newbridge Academy
Top-of-the-line technology is integrated into every classroom, through media-based activities, digital textbooks and online
curriculum. Our grade six to twelve students are provided with a personal Apple iPad—even our Junior Primary to grade five
classes regularly use class sets of iPad Minis. Teachers use the technology to enrich the curriculum and give students
up-to-date lessons on how to properly use the advances in technology.
iPad’s in the classroom
iPads in the classroom promote creativity and hands-on learning. Students engage
with curriculum in interactive ways and are able to find information in an instant. The
iPads are very user-friendly with everything at the students’ finger tips.
Powerful educational apps allow students to learn the curriculum in many different
ways and the assistive technology built in to the iPad helps the student develop
independent problem solving skills that will help them as they move through the more
challenging material.
Apple has allowed the teachers to connect with the students like never before by using Apple iBooks Author and the iPad
iBooks app. These applications allow teachers to create interactive course content that engages the student more then
conventional textbooks. The teacher can incorporate slideshows, videos and 3D images into a textbook that can be loaded to
the students own iPad. The student is capable of highlighting important
information, adding study notes, and creating personal study material for future
use. Students are able to flip through a book by sliding their finger along
thumbnail images of the pages. If they don’t know the definition of a word, one
tap takes them to a glossary or dictionary. Students can flick through a photo
gallery, rotate a 3D object to show a human brain from every angle, or have the
answer spring to life in an interactive chapter review.
Ultimately, the iPad provides an interactive tool that engages the student and
connects them to the material like never before. By using the pre-loaded
software or loadable applications, the iPad has re-defined the classroom
environment.
eBeam/Mimio in the classroom
eBeam and Mimio are portable interactive whiteboard systems and
accessories developed to connect the student and teacher through
technology. eBeam systems work with computers, iPads, and digital
projectors to transform any standard whiteboard or wall into an interactive
display and writing surface.
These devices allow text, images, and video to be projected onto different
surfaces and the interactive marker can be used to add notes, access control
menus, change images and create diagrams and drawings. The presentations,
notes and images can be saved and emailed to class or loaded onto Angel
e-Learning platform.—a great tool for review prior to tests and exams!
Finally, the information could be shared in real time over the internet.

Technology @ Newbridge Academy
ANGEL Global e-Learning System
Newbridge Academy is the only school in Atlantic Canada that utilizes the ANGEL Global e-Learning System. ANGEL is an
advanced online system that is widely used among US universities and private schools. Having access to this program gives our
students an advantage for the future.
ANGEL is a web-based course management and collaboration system that enables teachers to manage course materials and to
communicate with students and parents. It allows teachers, students and parents to stay connected beyond the classroom.
ANGEL functions both as a complement to traditional classroom learning and as a site for distance learning. A significant
portion of ANGELʼs power lies in its capability to be tailored to our specific needs. This is an evolving program that has endless
possibilities for the Newbridge community.
Students and parents alike use the ANGEL system as resource tool to help navigate through the junior high and high school
curriculum. Teachers are able to upload all Nova Scotia Department of Education curriculum, enriched with other provincial
learning concepts online (current and future), lessons, student resources, reviews and assignments. ANGEL allows access to all
electronic textbooks and a teacher-driven calendar that allows students and parents a direct view of upcoming due dates and
assignments. ANGEL’s capacity fully supports students in creating a personalized schoolwork management calendar for their
own independence and to develop time management skills.
The following photos are examples of what students and parents can expect to see when they log-in to ANGEL.

CLASSIC PROGRAM
Our grade three to six students, have the option of continuing the Lower Elementary athletic program that takes the
“introduction” approach to a variety of sports. These weekly lessons give students the fundamental skills and awareness
to continue their development and interest in the sport. Most notably are the swimming, skating, soccer, creative
movement and tennis lessons, which are all taught by highly-trained, professional instructors. Plus they attend daily Active
Living™ classes with our physical education teacher to expose them to even more sports and games.
Please note: If combining more than one activity with the Classic program, we cannot guarantee selection of the “Classic”
activities they will take part in—this program is dependent on scheduling.
CLASSIC HOCKEY PROGRAM



For grades three to nine.
Four on-ice sessions and one hockey-specific off-ice session per week.
Daily afternoon Active Living™ class.




Skills acquisition and development.
Enhancement of individual tactics.
Development of Hockey Sense in conjunction with skill development.
Weekly games with instruction.
Both the on– and off-ice programs are designed to offer players an
opportunity to develop their individual skills and tactics. Fundamental skills are enhanced through a progressive and
innovative teaching model that builds a solid foundation for skill, then enhances it with additional complicators as skills
are developed. Skills are taught in three phases - build base skill, enhance technique, combine solid technique with speed.
Example of weekly winter hockey schedule (subject to change)
Monday
Power skating session will consist of work on balance and control, smooth and powerful strides, turning speed and lateral
mobility, aggressive starts and sudden stops, quick turns and transitions, and agility maneuvers.
Tuesday
Puck control session will consist of two general areas - stick agility techniques, and moves and fakes. Skills and tactics covered
include, but are not limited too, puck carries, dribbling, toe control, puck protection and cupping the puck.
Wednesday
Individual tactic session will include work with and without the puck building on concepts players need to improve
performance. This area combines the work completed in the first two session’s in the week and offers players an opportunity to
utilize these skills, with speed and control, enabling players to enhance their ability to play offensively and defensively.
Thursday
Off-ice hockey-specific training, continuing to focus on fundamentals and individual skills with a high focus on stick skills, quick
feet and athletic ability. This provides an excellent opportunity for enhancing skill by being able to target technique, add
complicators to challenge student-athletes and the opportunity for a high volume of repetition that is required to build skill.
Friday
Game day—Players will participate in a scrimmage where they have the opportunity to practice their acquired skills in a game
setting. coaches will monitor play and provide feedback to players on skill application and tactics so that they may develop their
hockey sense.

Skills are taught in three phases - build base skill, enhance technique,
combine solid technique with speed.
Fundamental skills are enhanced through a progressive and innovative teaching model that builds a solid foundation for
skill, then enhances it with additional complicators as skills are developed. Our coaches use these opportunities to
provide individual feedback to enhance player awareness in order to provide the opportunity for maximum development
for our student-athletes.
Our Hockey Program includes on-ice, individual and group skill instruction under the direction of Professional Coaches:
Keifer House, Paddy Flynn, Jaro Sevcik and Brad MacCharles, utilizing their hockey experience, including NHL, European
Hockey, Canadian University and Major Junior Hockey playing and coaching experience. Our Hockey Program focuses on
the acquisition and application of individual skills and tactics to game situations. Newbridge also offers its
student-athletes fitness training and healthy lifestyle awareness to enhance their personal development.

DANCE
For students in grades three through nine, in partnership with Erin Hopewell and
Rebecca Morash from Dance Zone Performing Arts Centre, our dance program is
designed for students looking for the opportunity to explore dance and offer a
foundation of skills needed for the growth and development of each individual dancer.
The program offers a variety of classes including jazz, hip hop, lyrical and ballet. We
offer an enjoyable way for students to develop their physical skills, channel their
energy, stimulate their imagination and promote creativity.
Our more advanced students will receive specialized attention in further developing
their technique and abilities which will complement and enhance the training they are
receiving through their respective studios. The low teacher to student ratio gives
advanced students the time needed to pinpoint areas for improvement and cultivate a
well-rounded dancer.
Erin Hopewell is well-known as an instructor, performer and choreographer in the Maritime Provinces and has acquired a
steadily growing list of choreography awards both in Canada and the United States. Erin's students have been the
recipients of countless awards, scholarships and International Grand Champion titles. Having trained full-time as a dancer
under Erin, Rebecca Morash attended Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario and after many
years of study and practicum, Rebecca is now a qualified teacher and award-winning choreographer.

schools across Canada.
Students applying to Newbridge are evaluated on school reports, performance in the interview, and references. We weigh

Notice to Withdraw
At Newbridge Academy, we recognize that every family has situations that can change future plans. For school planning
and recruiting purposes, it is imperative that the school has as much advance notice as possible for vacant seats in
upcoming school years. If a student is not returning for the subsequent school year, we require written notice of your
intent to withdraw from the school in the upcoming year by March 31st.
Fundraising
Newbridge Academy families are required to participate in all fundraising activities for the school. Several fundraisers are
held throughout the year in order to keep tuition costs low while maintaining and improving .
Financial Obligations
Upon acceptance of a seat at the school offered to their child, parents have an obligation to pay the fees outlined above
according to the due dates identified. No portion of the annual tuition and any other school fees, paid or due, will be
refunded or cancelled in the event of the students’ absence, withdrawal or dismissal from Newbridge Academy after June
1st of the calendar year school is to commence. In the unfortunate event that a student is suspended or expelled, annual

financial loss resulting from unexpected withdrawals. Any outstanding balances will become due immediately.

OPTIONAL:
Fundraising for Tuition
Approved Fundraising Programs for Tuition Reduction
The school has authorized the following fundraising programs to support and aid parents in reducing the cost of their
child’s tuition costs:
FundScrip is a fundraising program that asks you to pay for your everyday purchases with gift cards bought from
FundScrip online. A percentage of the cards that you purchase is then credited back to your child’s tuition. This means
that just by paying for your groceries and gas with gift cards you can easily generate $25 every month for your tuition
– that’s $300 a year!
Sponsor Board Newbridge Academy maintains an annual sponsor board. Parents may solicit donations from
businesses of their choice for which they receive a dollar for dollar credit toward their child’s tuition costs. Any
amount exceeding $100 qualifies the donor to receive recognition on the sponsor board in the form of a sign space
(to the donor’s specifications). $15 will be deducted for the cost of the ad.
The school often has fundraisers through out the year, that parents can also use to help reduce their tuition amount. For
example, if we sell raffle tickets on a prize, once you sell the required minimum number of tickets, you will get 50 percent
of any additional tickets you sell.
Additional Fundraising Programs
Parents are not authorized to fundraise on behalf of the school in any way that is not authorized in writing by the school.
Parents interested in obtaining the school’s approval for alternative fundraising programs are to submit their ideas to the
Newbridge Academy Administration Office for approval prior to implementation (this includes social media solicitations).
At the beginning of the school year, parents will receive a package of information in support of these and any other
fundraising programs the school approves.
