The Startin Group… ’since 1840’ is very much after all these
years a firmly rooted family owned company, in its second
‘dynasty’ with the Freeman family. Managing Director
Gerald Freeman would like you to hear from two of the

revolutionising new cars. In my opinion there has
never been a better time to buy a new car, interest rates
are low, fuel consumption figures are low, deals are strong and
the quality of new cars is better than it’s ever been. As you delve
into this latest edition of the newsletter you’ll see exactly what
I mean.
I can foresee a lot of change in the motor industry in the coming
years with the wealth of new small turbo petrol engines that rival
a diesel's economy and emissions without having to compromise
on power (123bhp from a 1.0L Ford engine!!!). This will help all
our cars reach the next Euro 6 criteria (you can read about
Euro 6 and engine direction on p3).
Hybrid powertrains are becoming ever more prominent ranging
from high powered supercars like the new 2015 Honda NSX
all the way to city cars like the Honda Jazz Hybrid, however
the biggest revolution I expect to see is the introduction of
Hydrogen fuel cell technology. It is already tried and tested in
California, but as the infrastructure for Hydrogen builds in the
UK, I have no doubt that in the coming years we may start seeing
the Honda FCEV appearing on our roads, emitting nothing but
water vapour. That I think will be the start of the future!

I started in the motor trade in 2006 just after I left school at
18, I had no idea what I wanted to do in life but the family
business seemed the right thing to do and after 8 years I am
100% happy it was the right decision.

My name is Ben Winslow, Director of Startin Group Ltd and
Dealer Principal for Startin Skoda. I left college and started
working for the family business in 1992. I am shortly going to be
starting my 23rd year. This means the big ‘40’ is looming.
I knew from the age of four years old, all I was interested in
was cars! It was therefore an easy decision to make to join the
family business. I guess it’s been an honour for me to have been
able to work in all departments and four franchises throughout
my career and this has given me a great understanding of the
whole business.

The Motor trade for me has changed dramatically over
the years. Gone are the days of Arthur Daley and Fred in
the shed. Our dealerships now are very professional and
work to very tight processes, concentrating heavily on
the customer experience. For me, happy, loyal customers

something you just don’t get in the present world of
internet shopping.
In 2005 Startin Group Ltd acquired Startin Skoda, formerly
Bowling Green Garage. The years here with Skoda have
been very enjoyable albeit challenging at times. I have to
say now that Skoda really is a fantastic brand and has won
countless awards over the last 5 years, not only with their
vehicles but also as a manufacturer. I look forward to the
future with Skoda for many more years.

Euro 6 engine
Euro 6 is the latest diesel engine emission legislation being driven by the European
Commission. Since 1993, when the very first ‘Euro 1’ legislation was introduced for
trucks and buses, the European Commission has regulated the amount of pollutants
coming out of the tail-pipe of a diesel engine.
In particular, the Commission identified two key constituents within the exhaust
stream – Oxides of Nitrogen or ‘NOx’, and ‘Particulate Matter (PM - basically soot
particle) – as being harmful and which needed to be controlled and reduced. As a result, over the past 20 years,
European engine makers have invested heavily in developing new technology which has seen the levels of NOx and
PM (as well as other elements such as unburnt hydrocarbons) in the exhaust of all new diesel-engine trucks and buses
falling dramatically, with a consequent improvement in air quality.
Such has been the response of the manufacturers to the challenge of reducing exhaust emissions that the air coming
out of the tail-pipe of a Euro 6 diesel engine is cleaner than ever before, with permitted NOx levels reduced by
75% compared with the current Euro 5 standard. And thanks to changes governing the way particulates have to be
measured, the reduction in PM is closer to 99%!
The arrival of Euro 6 also sees the adoption of a new test procedure for certifying the new generation of low emission
truck and bus diesels as well as stricter rules governing the on-board diagnostic controls which monitor the engine’s
exhaust treatment, ensuring it works properly, signalling a fault to the vehicle operator if it isn’t.
All of our manufacturers are already producing Euro 6 compliant engines or due to release them soon.

the dealership, further improving the area.

Startin in the community
As pointed out on p4 with Startin of Stourbridge’s involvement, we
are very much a local business for local people and it’s great to get
involved in community activities.
We have an active team of staff throughout the group – we’re always up to something so we
thought in this Newsletter we’d give you a taste of some of the activities we’ve been up to in
2014.
In May this year Startin Group sponsored the Basil D’Oliveira Foundation’s ‘Walk for Basil’ with
funds and a support vehicle (The New Civic Tourer was a perfect companion as with a MPG
figure matching the distance of the walk (74 mpg) it was certainly going to be cheap on fuel if
not on shoes!). Mark Ashbourne, who is registered blind (also a huge cricket fan hailing from
Stourbridge), spearheaded the challenge and was a great ambassador for the Foundation and
Startin Group.
The Foundation fundraises to help bring disadvantaged kids from South Africa to Worcester
on an exchange basis providing experiences and opportunities that otherwise would not be
available. Mark Ashbourne and team including Ryan D’Oliveira (Grandson to Basil) walked from
Worcester to Cardiff raising funds and awareness. Particularly poignant as since the walk Basil’s
son Damian sadly passed away.
It was a bit wet for the start although spirit was not dampened. BBC Midlands Today’s
Dan Pallett came and filmed the big off… with interviews on the TV for the team.
It was nice to see some Startin T-shirts on the TV!

In June we had a display at the Redditch Lions classic car show and fun day. Lions are
quite simply a group of well intentioned individuals who organise and hold events
within their local community raising money to put back into good causes.
We went along with a Fiat, Peugeot and Kia and had a great time meeting people…

St. Richard’s Hospice fundraiser at the historic Shelsley Walsh hill
climb with our BTCC Civic Tourer, a Classic Ford Escort and retired
(semi!) Honda Dealer Principal John Bentley with his Triumph Stag.
Also raising money for St. Richard’s Hospice – Group Marketing
Manager Ian Wild ran the Worcester Half marathon.... which he actually
did injured (and doesn’t he go on about it!) – Well done Ian.
In May Startin Skoda donated a part exchange to a team of Fundraisers
driving to Benidorm in a 5 day 1500 miles challenge… Team "Smokey
and the Bandit" from the Crown in Powick raising money for
St. Richard’s Hospice.
We’re also out and about at non charity events too…

August saw us sponsoring the Worcester Races at the Ladies
Vintage Day, we’ve also been up at St. Peter’s Garden Centre on the
August Bank Holiday and we’ve done five weeks so far this year in the
Redditch Kingfisher Centre showing off vehicles from the Redditch
Super Site.
You may also have heard us on the radio… this year we’ve been on
YouthComm, Smooth and Free Radio with all our brands. We used
our catchy jingle that was originally sung by Peter Freeman’s wife ‘you
can trust us at Startins’ in the 70’s. It had to be remade for the digital
era but I’m sure some of our longer standing customers from the
Stourbridge and Redditch areas might recall it from when we were on
the Birmingham Radio stations (original home of the Startin garages) in
the 80’s.
We’ve also used the large billboards in and around Stourbridge
promoting that Startin is the new name for Ford in Stourbridge since
securing the franchise earlier this year.

We have donated to and promised to promote
a cause from a customer’s daughter who through
complications at their son’s birth found that the
Charity ‘Severn Freewheelers’ (a group of
motorcyclists who deliver blood) was the only way
blood could be brought swiftly from Bristol thus
saving the life of their son.
On September 27th 2014 a group of people
(including the parents) are cycling from Chippenham,
110 miles up to Redditch, taking in Wiltshire, Avon,
Gloucestershire and Worcestershire raising money for
the Severn Freewheelers…

Did you know that from October

will no longer be issuing
Tax Discs for your car? Vehicles will
still need to be taxed, but you as an
owner will no longer be required to
display this in your windscreen and
thus no disc will be issued.
Complicating matters further, when you sell your car
(either to us as a part exchange or privately) you will be
required to request a rebate from the DVLA (or lose it)
but the new keeper MUST apply for road fund licence
immediately and cannot continue to use the previously
purchased tax.
It is also reported that you will be able to pay by direct debit
monthly rather than at 6 or 12 month intervals at a 5% premium.

for Honda in 2015?
There has been an awful lot of ‘hype’ about Honda this year.
This is down to the very excited Honda fans looking forward to
the 2015 model range.
What we do know and can share with you is there is a new Honda Jazz model due, there is a refreshed
Honda Civic and there will be a range of new engines (as Tim touched on on p1).
More? Ok, there will be a new little brother for the CR-V…
we believe it’ll be named the HR-V (which some of you will
remember used to be in the model line-up).
