NOTES ON THE SONGS
This is a compilation of songs that I have written, added lyrics with permission of the musicians or
collaborated in writing. These are songs I feel might be worthy of being sung or recorded by other singers or
to be used in an educational environment to encourage new repertoire in jazz.
The notes will give you some insight into the creation of these songs and information you will need in order
to record them. I hope that you will decide to use these songs in your performance repertoire, to record or
share with your students. Please contact ellen@ellenjohnson.net or info@vocalvisions.net if you are
intending on recording any of these songs so that you can get the proper information, permission and
listings.

In process of being recorded – demo available.
I was using the original song, “Bird’s Blues”, from Jim Snidero’s book Jazz Conception for singers to help
my vocal students work on improvisation skills. The song was based on Charlie Parker’s “Now’s The Time”
chord changes and I liked the solo. I decided this would be a great opportunity to write a tribute to my dear
friend and one of the vocal icons of jazz, Sheila Jordan, on the solo. Everyone knows Sheila loved Bird and
so it was my tribute to her inside a tribute to Bird from Jim. I was fortunate in having Sheila sing with me in
Los Angeles for my CD release These Days that was dedicated to her bass and voice innovations. I surprised
her and sang these lyrics and she improvised on the solo section. It was a special moment for me since she is
one of my mentors and has inspired me to take creative chances throughout my career. I hope that this will
help keep her beautiful story and message alive.
A Girl Can Dream, Can’t She?:
Rick Helzer/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson

Recorded on Too Good To Title
Another one of my dear friends and someone who has been a great musical partner and collaborator, Rick
Helzer, wrote this “out” tune. Since he knows I love songs like this I offered to write some lyrics. He
wondered how I was going to incorporate the title of his tune into the lyrics and was amused at the outcome.
Even though this was written in 1993 the sentiment is still the same, the wish for world peace, humanity and
love. This meaning never goes out of style.

Chinchilla Serenade:

Recorded on Chinchilla Serenade
This song came out of my love of changing meters and for using the voice as an instrument. As a result
this song has no lyrics on purpose. When I first recorded this song everyone thought that this had
something to do with South America since the chinchilla is a native animal from that region. It had
nothing to do with that at all! My musician friends and I use to try to come up with obscure titles for
songs and this is one I thought was amusing. Although now that I listen to the song, it does sound like a
bunch of chinchillas’ scurrying around somewhere.
Goin’ Home:
Derek Cannon/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson
©1994 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Recorded on Chinchilla Serenade
There are so many wonderful musicians in the world that we just don’t get to hear enough. Derek is one of
those people who can play a mean trumpet and he’s a truly wonderful person with a lot of heart. We
collaborated on this song for his master’s recital at San Diego State University years ago and I ended up
recording it on one of my CDs. I love this song and it’s gut-wrenching message both musically and
lyrically. It can be as simple as just missing your home or the spiritual context of going to a greater home.
I hope someone with a jazzy gospel voice will sing this song one day. This song has the potential to bring
chills down your spine.
I Think I’m In Love:
Music & Lyrics: Ellen Johnson & Laura Mayo
©2006 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Recorded on Illuminations
Laura Mayo came to me as a student when she was a junior in High School wanting to study jazz. I was
impressed how good her sense of swing feel was for such a young person with not much exposure to jazz.
At one point she entered a jazz vocal competition and I decided to help her compose a jazz song as part of
her repertoire. It was her first experience writing a song collaboratively and this song was born. This is a
wonderful song to use in place of the often-sung standards.
White Collar Blues (aka Noddin’ Ya Head Blues):
Charles Mingus/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson
©1975 Jazz Workshop, Inc - ©2002 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Lyrics with permission of Sue Mingus
Recorded on These Days
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I have always been a long time fan of the music of Charles
Mingus. I have probably sung every composition that he has written for vocalists and when those ran out I
started writing lyrics to the songs I liked myself. Mingus wrote beautiful lyrics to many of his own songs
too. I am so fortunate to have Sue Mingus’s blessing on these lyrics so that I could record them. So far I
have recorded five of his songs with his lyrics and mine. I am currently doing a program of his vocal
music that I hope to make a recording project out of in the near future. This song was written about the
greed and corruption in the world of white-collar workers; banks, corporations, etc. I had no idea how
timely it would turn out to be with the 2008 stock market crash, Enron, Bernie Madoff and the bank scandals.
I know Mingus would have loved this because he was always an activist for truth and justice. It’s meant to
have a twinge of humor and sarcasm towards those who abuse the system. My own treatment of the song on
These Days CD has changing tempos in honor of Mingus and to demonstrate the insanity of the financial
world of greed.
Nostalgia For Mingus (aka Nostalgia In Times Square):
Charles Mingus/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson
©1976 Jazz Workshop, Inc - ©2004 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Lyrics with permission of Sue Mingus
Recorded on These Days
I started out writing two sets of lyrics for this song. I wanted to use them both and I did. They work well in
the context that this song is dedicated to the memory of Mingus and in the same vein, recognizing the feeling
Mingus must have had about New York and the jazz scene. In performance I use the solo section to free style
sing about Mingus and New York.
Skylight Of Blue (aka Peggy’s Blue Skylight):
Charles Mingus/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson
©1975 Jazz Workshop, Inc - ©1986 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Lyrics with permission of Sue Mingus
Recorded on Too Good To Title
I had the honor to record this with Charles McPherson who recorded this with Mingus. I wish I could have
done more songs with Charles because he is an amazing musician and a very respectful and deep human
being. This song has a great story behind how I found it and why I arranged the lyrics in this way. There are
only lyrics on the A sections of the tune and the bridge is a vocal instrumental only. So here’s the story: I
found this song in the late 70’s in a fake book called Eskimo Jazz. I have always been into finding songs that
are not typically done by singers and especially by the great jazz instrumentalists. I started to play this and fell
in love instantly with the melody. A lyric came to me that spoke of experiencing the pain of life but always
believing in the higher realms of love and understanding that through hard times we can know an even deeper
joy and compassion. I wrote it down and then decided I wanted to do the song in one of my concerts. I was
rehearsing it with pianist, Rick Helzer and all of a sudden the band starts playing this other section that I had
never heard before. I asked them what they were doing and they replied they were playing the bridge. As it
turned out the fake book had left out the bridge of the tune. Of course I had no idea when I wrote the lyrics
that there was a bridge. I had never heard the recording and was only going by the chart, now there's a lesson
to all of you singers! Anyway, necessity is the mother of invention, so I decided to do the bridge as a vocal
without words that turned out to be a hip arrangement that I recorded and have used whenever I sing this
song. I prefer having a saxophone double the bridge with me but I can do it either way. It’s a great
composition for working on improvisation with advanced changes.
Sonny’s Isle Of St.Thomas (aka St. Thomas):
Sonny Rollins/Lyrics: Ellen Johnson
©1963 Prestige Music - Lyrics: ©1976 Prestige Music
Not recorded at this date
I fell in love with this song after learning it in the 1970’s and these lyrics came to me in 1976. I submitted
these to Sonny Rollins and he liked them and he allowed them to be published. I was ecstatic because it
was my dream to have these lyrics published by Sonny Rollins and I was hoping he would like the lyrics. I
thought they captured the feel of the island in its imagery and the joyfulness of the rhythm of the people.
At the time I did not know there were any lyrics to this song and only found out in the last five years or so
that Don Passman and Sheila Jordan both have lyrics too.
TV News Blues:
Ellen Johnson
©1993 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Recorded on Too Good To Title
I wrote this after practicing to a Miles Davis track while watching the news. At the time the OJ Simpson trial
was on every minute of the day and I was getting tired of hearing about all the bad news in the world.
Enough said. Some of the lyrics are dated now but it’s amazing how much of the news is the same. Feel free
to update where necessary to make the song more current. I keep revising so check with me if you are
looking for current lyrics.
With Every Kiss (Song For Frances):
Ellen Johnson
©2004 Long Snows Moon Music, BMI
Recorded on From A Mother’s Heart
This song is dedicated to my mother, Frances, who inspired my journey into my musical life. I grew up
hearing music every day of my life with her singing and playing piano. However, I also have to thank Alan
Pasqua for this song because if it weren’t for him encouraging me to write 16 bars of an original song for one
of his lessons I would not have this song today. I was really trying to write an instrumental piece with no
vocals. I came up with this melody line and then added the chord changes, which was a new way of writing
for me. I usually write the chords first and then add the melody and lyrics. I was feeling pretty good about
this instrumental tune and then these words kept coming into my head. I kept trying to push them away but
they wouldn’t leave. At some point I realized I was foolish to fight the apparent gift I was receiving and
wrote them down. Now I’m glad I did as I have received so many wonderful comments about this song from
mothers, daughters and sons. Seems like there are not enough songs to honor mothers out there so this ended
up on a compilation I produced of songs dedicated to mothers called, From A Mother’s Heart.

A Bird Song For Sheila
Her name is Sheila Jordan and she digs bop
It’s in her heart to sing it
And when she sings it she can really swing it
Because her life was Charlie Parker
Jazz singing Sheila Jordan and we all know
That she loves be-bop
She shares it with us every time she sings Charlie’s songs
Solo Section:
That’s right
Sheila singing Bird
She wants us to remember him forever
Charlie gave his gift of bebop
And he played the sax with his heart and soul
And so does Sheila Jordan when she sings her music
Just listen, you’ll hear it
The message she sends
It’s the truth you know
Charlie was her friend
He taught us all to play be bop too
He gave us music
And Sheila keeps his sound alive
When she swings “Now’s The Time”
Or singin’ “Quasimodo”, “Scrapple”, “Donna Lee” and “Confirmation”
Don’t forget she sang her own songs
“Sheila’s Blues” and singing “Dat Dere”
for her daughter
Charlie Parker speaking
Through the voice of Sheila
Giving us his message
And Sheila keeps his soul alive whenever she sings
Jazz
Her life is always about the music
She loves the music
At fourteen she followed Charlie Parker
So Charlie Parker was her Jazz guru too
Let me tell you Sheila Jordan’s really something
And we love her
Don’t you know it’s true!

A GIRL CAN DREAM, CAN’T SHE?
Last night I dreamt the greatest dream that I ever had,
I woke up in a sweat.
I dreamt I was the leader of the universe
And I was out of debt.
And there were no divisions ever between the genders
And there was no destruction of the planets or the creatures that live
there
Awake the world is just the way I left it before
Nothing is changed you see
I hope one day that I can have my wishes come true
A girl can dream, can’t she?

BILL REMEMBERED
Listening to the man who inspired me,
Notes turned into words filled with memories,
Stories of his life,
And of his loves,
And of his dreams
Dreams locked inside reflective days that he captured,
Tears he can’t hide
Lost in the changes
Now I hear him play,
He speaks to me.
Saying in tones what set him free
Naked emotions called him from above and
Time that he understood so easily, so openly,
He gave us all a time of love,
He gave his heart and soul…

Goin’ Home
Lately, I’ve been thinkin’ about
Goin’ home
Packing up everything that I can carry with me
And goin’ home.
Home to my brothers
Home to my sisters
Home to my family of the world
There’ll be peace of mind when I home
There’ll be hope to find when I’m home
There’ll be no more fears when I’m home
There’ll be no more tears
Only love
Everywhere I go
Everywhere I see
Waiting for me
When I’m home
Really (goin’) home.

I THINK I’M IN LOVE
Oh I love him madly
I’d give my heart gladly
It’s such a tragedy
I think I’m in love
What’s a heart for
Except to break more
We all know the score
I think I’m in love
It may seem tragic
But I’m feeling magic
He took my heart step by step to the sky
Until the spell breaks
Oh, what a headache
I guess I can’t fake
I think I’m in love

Noddin’ Ya Head Blues
I watched him nod his head
I heard him when he said
“I’m innocent and that’s no lie”
He nodded up and down
I didn’t catch him frown
Who could know that it wasn’t true
Now he’s doin’ time, white collar crime
I guess he’s got the noddin ya head blues
What made him turn to crime?
I guess he lost his mind
The pressures of a life of greed
Priorities were wrong
He knew it all along
He said that greed seduced his soul
Now he’s forced to pay, noddin away
I guess he’s got the noddin ya head blues

Nostalgia For Mingus (aka Nostalgia in Times Square)
Mingus dedication lyrics:
We miss him,
We miss him
We’re missin’ the magic moments spent with Mingus
We dig him,
We love him,
So grateful he left us all his special music
And what a hip bass he played for us
Nostalgia for Mingus
New York lyrics:
I miss them,
I miss them
I’m missin’ the magic moments spent
In Times Square
I need them,
I want them
I wanna get back to New York
And to Times Square
Seeing all the lights and hearing jazz
Nostalgia in Times Square.

It’s in love that we know
It’s in pain that we grow to feel
Life’s sad refrain
Continues to remain
Inside
Keeps us from our soul
And what can make us whole
It’s as if we cannot have love come to us again
But when we know the truth,
There is no excuse for fear,
That inner voice helps us make our choice
If we hear
Listen to your heart
Whispering your part
It guides you to that higher spirit above

It’s in love we know
It’s in life we grow to see
Love’s joyful song will belong to us again
Showing us our soul

It’s as if we always have love inside us

St. Thomas the place to help you sing our your song
The place with the morning sun that shines all day long
Shedding light
Feeling right
For a while on St. Thomas Isle
Along with the serenade of gulls out at sea
The music around us nature’s own symphony
Plays in time
Feels just fine
Brings a smile to St. Thomas Isle.

TV News Blues
They talk about the war,
And how many more are poor
People feeling hate,
And how we're all over weight
(Chorus)
I tried to change the station
Look for something bright
But it's Oprah, Geraldo and Phil (these lyrics can be updated to fit current time)
(But it's Fox News, O'Reilly and Dateline )
Or a heavy weight champion fight
(Police car chases all through the night)
(Chorus)
Now I wanna see something happy,
That's a little bit more upbeat
But the only station left is PBS
And one show, Sesame Street
(Chorus)
So I called up my friends,
Just to ask what I should do,
But they were so depressed
From watching CNN news
(Chorus)
I finally got wise
Through my TV away
And now I'm so happy
I hear all my friends complain
(Chorus - change to “they've got the TV News Blues)

TV NEWS BLUES
I woke up this morning
Turned on my TV set
There’s bloodshed and riots,
Starvation and floods and a trillion dollar debt
(Chorus):
I’ve got the TV news blues
I’ve got the TV news blues
Seems there’s nothing I can do
Listening to the TV news
They talk about the war,
And how many more are poor
People feeling hate,
And how we’re all over weight
(Chorus)
I tried to change the station
Look for something bright
But it’s Oprah, Geraldo and Phil (these lyrics can be updated to fit current time)
(or use: But it’s Fox News, O’Reilly and Dateline )
Or a heavy weight champion fight
(or use: Police car chases all through the night)
(Chorus)
Now I wanna see something happy,
That’s a little bit more upbeat
But the only station left is PBS
And one show, Sesame Street

So I called up my friends,

But they were so depressed

É
for her
With Every Kiss
(Song for Frances)
With every kiss she inspires a song
With every touch her smile leads you along
On a ride
Deep inside her soul
You’re her child and as pure as gold.
And when she laughs all the world will cry
To see her beauty light the sky
Stars twinkling in her eyes
She sends you love as she sings you to sleep
She wraps up hope in your pillow to keep
When she’s gone you are never, never alone
For her heart is forever your home.
