The following specification has been developed by:

to assist designers in the specification of Heavy-Duty Extruded Shape Non Welded Aluminum Fence in
horizontal rail or picket configuration.
The section has been developed and formatted in accordance with the principals embodied in the Construction
Specifications Institute's Manual of Practice and is intended for use in conjunction with Contract Conditions,
Bidding Conditions and General Requirements developed in accordance with CSI guidelines.
Notes to the specifier are included in the boxes. Options that must be selected by the specifier are shown in brackets
[
]. Inapplicable clauses shall be deleted..

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Structural Performance: Engineer, fabricate, and install handrails, guardrails, and railing systems to
withstand, when tested per ASTM E 935, loadings required by applicable building and safety codes but not
less than the following:
Superior railings are typically designed for ICBO loadings (200 pound concentrated and 50 pound uniform
as applied below) however railings can be fabricated to meet other code loading conditions Codes vary in
method of application and magnitude of load. Governing code should be checked for specific requirements.
Horizontal and vertical concentrated load test of railing systems should be conducted in accordance with
ASTM E 935.

SUBMITTALS
Product Data: Submit sufficient manufacturer's data to indicate compliance with these specifications. Mark

accessories.

Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for fabrication and installation of ornamental metal work. Include
plans, elevations and detail sections. Indicate materials, methods, finishes and types of joinery, fasteners,
anchorages and accessory items. Provide setting diagrams and templates for anchorages, sleeves, and bolts
installed by others.

Load Tests:
For railings required to meet structural loading requirements, submit results from

ASTM E 935 conducted on the manufacturer’s supplied system indicating compliance with required
structural loading.

Deliver handrails, guardrails, railing systems, and related components in protective packaging. Inspect
materials to ensure that specified products have been received.
B.
Store components to avoid damage from moisture, abrasion, and other construction activities.
A.
Deliver and maintain material in original packaging until installation.

Field Measurements: Take measurements of actual dimensions where necessary for fit without gaps.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

MANUFACTURERS

Guard Rail Series: Series 900 and 950: Pickets shall be 3/4 inch (1.91 cm) square on 4-1/2 inch (11.43
cm) or 6 inch (15.24 cm) centers, and shall run between the top and bottom rail.
1. 950 ADA Regulation Design - 3/4 inch (1.91 cm) square pickets, [2 inch (5.08 cm)] [4 inch (10.16
cm)] square post and 2 inch ( 5.08 cm) wide [905 ][902] top handrail as specified below.
a.
Space pickets at [4-1/2 inch (11.43 cm)] [6 inch (15.24 cm)] centers
Series 950 Aluminum Railing was developed to meet state, local and federal codes requiring ADA Regulations and
Guidelines. The narrowed 2" maximum top rail on the series 950 allows for a normal grip on ramps, stairs, or on
horizontal railing and still maintains a pleasing and aesthetic look. The Series 950 Railing is used on office
buildings, commercial applications, hospitals, industrial and educational environments, as well as apartments and
homes.

RAILING MATERIALS
Rail, post and pickets: Aluminum extrusions; alloy and temper 6063-T6.

Manufacturer's standard ANSI 713 alloy cast bases or solid aluminum 6063 stock.

Fasteners: Provide concrete anchorage for fastening and complying with applicable Federal standards. All
fasteners used in the system shall be aluminum or stainless steel.

Grout: Non-shrink Portland cement-based hydraulic grout, mixed and applied in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions; gypsum based material are not acceptable.

Provide formulation that is resistant to erosion from water exposure without needing protection by a
sealer or waterproof coating and that is recommended by manufacturer for exterior use.
FABRICATION
Top rails shall be continuous without splices except for lengths longer than 24 feet (7.31 meters).

Fabricate railing system to meet step railing requirements by providing a rectangular hole in bottom rail.
For Series 990

Fabricate railing system to meet step railing requirements; riser and tread dimensions of the steps.

Cuts shall be clean and free of chamfer, from deburring, nicks and burrs. Drill holes of proper size for a
tight flush fit of rivets and screws.

EXAMINATION
Installer's Examination: Examine conditions under which construction activities of this section are to be
performed,

Submit written notification to Architect and system manufacturer if such conditions are unacceptable.
2.
Beginning erection constitutes installer's acceptance of conditions.
PREPARATION
Ensure that adjacent surfaces, structures, and finishes are protected from damage by construction activities
of this section.
INSTALLATION
Install units in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Keep perimeter lines straight, plumb, and
level. Provide grounds, clips, backing materials, adhesives, brackets, anchors, and accessories necessary for
a complete installation.

Expansion Bolt Mounting: Anchor through base plates to concrete substrate.

Arrange for casting of sleeves or core drill in concrete to provide holes for railing uprights.
b.
After setting, fill holes with hydraulic grout; brace members until grout is cured.
ERECTION TOLERANCES
Install railings plumb and level, securely fastened, with vertical members plumb.

Maximum variation from plumb: 1/4 inch (6.0 mm).

Maximum misalignment from true position: 1/4 inch (6.0 mm).

CLEANING AND PROTECTION
Remove dust or other foreign matter from component surfaces; clean finishes in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions.

Protection: After installation, protect installed work until project completion.

Ensure that finishes and structure of installed systems are not damaged by subsequent construction
activities.
2.
If minor damage to finishes occurs, repair damage in accordance with manufacturer's
recommendations; provide replacement components if repaired finishes are unacceptable to Architect.
