HP LaserJet
NAMING
HP LaserJet is moving to a new naming structure to make it easier for
customers to find the device they want—whether it’s time to upgrade, or to
replace their existing printer or MFP. The new naming system also makes it
easier to find the right supplies.
WHY CHANGE NAMING?
Changing a product naming scheme can produce long-term gains, but it also causes short and medium-term
pain. It is not something done lightly. The bottom line is, we’re doing this to help our customers, and in the
long run, it will simplify things for us as well.
Replacing products
With our new naming scheme, it will be easier for our customers to know which printer or MFP to buy when
it’s time to replace their current device. Under the current system, just 25 to 40 percent of customers identify
the right replacement product—but nearly 100 percent find the correct one using the new naming.
Upgrading products
Likewise, the new naming means customers can more easily upgrade their device. When they want to
upgrade from mono to color, or from single function to MFP, only a third of our customers find the correct
product today. Two-thirds get it right on their own using the new naming scheme.
Purchasing supplies
Our new HP LaserJet supplies selectability number makes it much easier for customers to identify the correct
supply for their product. Black, cyan, yellow, and magenta all have the same selectability number, and are
differentiated by packaging colors and descriptions.
IT’S SIMPLE
Customers like simpler names. In fact, they prefer the new naming scheme 8 to 1 versus the current scheme.
HP LASERJET NAMING: FOUR MAIN CHANGES
The new HP LaserJet naming scheme will be used across many different HP marketing applications, including
product naming, advertising, and packaging. It’s important to use the HP LaserJet name consistently and
correctly.

Scheduled in Spring 2011, we’re moving from complex individual product numbers to family numbers with
descriptors, which help customers easily identify replacement and upgrade products. These numbers are
emphasized in naming and branding, and do not change with new product introductions.
Family numbers
Family numbers are always stated in whole 100s (such as 200 or 300), never numbers like 205 or 356. They
are permanent, so customers can always find them. Product families are indicated by these numbers:

Descriptors
The descriptor follows the family number, and can be one of four choices:
• Blank—mono single function
• “MFP”—mono MFP

Model numbers will become unique for every printer, absorbing the complexity of HP LaserJet naming
(scheduled for Spring 2011). Individual model numbers allow us to drop the word “series” from our product
names. The “M” is included in each product’s number and simply means “model.” Model numbers are not
emphasized in naming and branding, and do change with new product introductions. Model numbers:
• Are used for supplies selectability and the supply chain
• Communicate the bundle features through their final alphas, as in the following table:

Up to two alpha feature designators may be combined (for example, dn for duplex and network). The following
“wild card” letters can be used for derivative skus: b, c, e, g, i, j, k, m, p, q, r, s, u, v, and y. These letters
should not be used: l and o.

Scheduled to start in Spring 2011, HP LaserJet supplies will have a new selectability number that makes it
much easier for customers to identify the correct supply for their product. Color laser supplies have a three-digit
+ alpha (A, X, D) number, while mono laser supplies have a two-digit + alpha number. Selectability numbers
are in addition to HP standard part numbers and do not correlate. Black, cyan, yellow, and magenta all have
the same selectability number, and are differentiated by packaging colors and descriptions. For example,
“230A” is used for all four colors.
HOW TO USE THE NEW NAMING
Whenever possible, the new naming should be used in its full form, as detailed in #1 below. If space is
limited, the product name may be shortened or modified only as described here:

General use: HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601n
2.
Firmware/software: HP LaserJet 600 M601n (excluding either “Enterprise” or “Pro”)
3.
Product nameplate: LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601 (without the “HP,” ideally with the model number on a
line by itself; LaserJet Pro products include bundle alphas in the model number, while LaserJet Enterprise
products may omit bundle alphas)
3a. Product nameplate (if it cannot be retooled to fit the new naming): LaserJet 600 M601 (excluding “HP”
and either “Enterprise” or “Pro”, with the model number appearing on the same line if necessary)
