Tasks
ABB Corporate Research is developing the foundations for
the next and next-next generation ABB products. As a Power
Electronics Specialist employee you will work in international
and dynamic teams of people with a wide range of experience
and competence. The US leg of corporate research shares
worldwide responsibility for research and technology
development in the ABB group for several areas within power
and automation.
Power electronics and electrical machines are key research
areas at the US corporate research center and span
applications from 1/2 kW, e.g.. in Robotics, kW's in LV drives
and motors, MW’s in Wind generation, and 10’s of MW’s
in marine, and industrial generators and motors. ABB MV
Drives and LV Drives are one of the world leaders in terms of
market volume and technology. Traditional and non-traditional
converter topologies are addressed. Research in power
conversion, controls, high speed drives, new power
electronics products, hybrid concepts, new material
applications and state-of-the-art converters are only a few of
the topics under development. Application examples are
Robotics, Wind, Traction, Solar, Marine, Mining, etc. Power
electronics converters employing wide band gap
semiconductors like SiC and GaN devices are considered to
be an important R&D enabler for next generation products.
Your tasks: As a Power Electronics Specialist, research and
innovation in power electronics converters, especially power
electronics converters utilizing wide band gap power
semiconductors like SiC and GaN devices. The tasks

include, not limited to, device evaluation/characterization,
gate drive design, magnetic design, power converter design
and testing. Good working experience/knowledge in use of Si
IGBTs/MOSFETs as well as wide band gap power
semiconductors like SiC and GaN devices with design of gate
drive circuits, thermal analysis, heat sink design, and
packaging.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
Ph.D in power electronics or in related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge on harmonics and EMI/EMC in power converter
design and testing is desired.
Interest in not only modeling and simulation but also hands-on
experience like HW construction and testing in the lab is a
merit. The close collaboration with the R&D departments of
ABB Business Areas and other Corporate Research Labs
require you to be a team player, willing to travel and be an
effective communicator.
For this strategic research work, a high degree of innovation,
creativity, analytical skills and the capability to nimbly apply
knowledge is required.
