About CD-R and CD-RW Discs
The CRX160E can write CD-R and CD-RW discs when used with
writing software. The ability to play (or read data) written by the
CRX160E on another model CD-ROM drive depends on having the
appropriate software settings when writing to the disc.
CD-R Discs
Data can be written to this type of disc only once, and once it has been
written, it cannot be erased. Music CDs created on CD-R disc media
can be played in a common CD player.
CD-RW Discs
Data can be written to and erased from this type of disc repeatedly.
Typically, a new CD-RW disc can be rewritten about 1,000 times.
Music CDs created on CD-RW disc media cannot be played in a CD
player unless it is specifically designed to be CD-RW compatible.
Writing Speeds
The writing speed used for a CD-R or CD-RW disc should be set to not
exceed that specified for the particular disc media. The writing speed is
determined by a setting in the writing software.
High-Speed CD-RW Discs
The CRX160E can write to high-speed CD-RW disc media. Data
written on high-speed CD-RW disks can be read by common CDROM drives other than the CRX160E.
CAUTION
CD-R/RW drives that do not display the High-Speed CD-RW logo cannot be used to
write to high-speed CD-RW discs. When writing or appending to such discs with a CDR/RW drive other than the CRX160E, be sure that the drive has the High-Speed CD-RW
logo. Also, always set the writing speed to that specified for the particular high-speed
CD-RW disc media being used.
12
Disc Compatibility
CD-R and CD-RW discs created with the CRX160E can be read on
most CD-ROM drives. However, some older CD-ROM drives do not
support reading CD-RW discs. Also, depending on the particular drivedisc combination, some CD-R and CD-RW discs may not be readable
in some drives due to variations in disc quality and drive characteristics
from one manufacturer to another.
Recommended Discs
We recommend using Sony recording media products with the
CRX160E. Please visit the SonyDrive data media home page listed in
the separate “Technical Support Information”.
13
In Case of Trouble
Before requesting technical support, please check once more whether
there is indeed a problem with the drive. Once you have ascertained
that the drive is at fault, contact your supplier or the Technical Support
Service Centre listed in the separate “Technical Support Information”.
Symptom
Cause/Remedy
The drive is not recognized
by the PC, or it fails to
operate properly.
t The power connector or interface cable may not be properly
connected. Refer to the “Quick Start Guide” chapter to
verify the connections are correct. Also, verify that the
connectors are firmly mated at the drive and PC ends.
t The interface cable may be connected backwards. Refer to
the “Quick Start Guide” chapter to verify that pin 1 of the
drive is connected to pin 1 at the PC side.
t The Master/Slave drive settings may be incorrect. Refer to
the “Quick Start Guide” chapter to verify the correct jumper
settings on the rear of the drive.
t In some cases, settings must also be made at the PC side
to match the Master/Slave setting of the drive. BIOS
settings or jumpers on an external hard drive may need to
be changed. Refer to the PC’s operating manual, or contact
the manufacturer or customer service office for your PC.
Audio is heard to skip or
data cannot be read from a
disc.
t The disc may be inserted upside down (the label should
face upwards).
t The disc may be incompatible. Refer to Compatible Discs
(page 11).
t The disc may need to be cleaned.
t The disc may be scratched. Try another disc to verify that
the drive works properly.
t Condensation may have formed on the disc or in the drive.
Remove the disc and wait about an hour.
The disc does not eject.
t The Eject button cannot be used to eject a disc when the
power to the drive (PC) is off.
t The disc cannot be ejected while it is being written to.
Follow the procedure in the writing software to eject the
disc.
t The PC may be hung due to an unrelated cause. If so, turn
the PC off and back on.
t If the disc cannot be ejected despite the above, push a thin
tool into the Emergency Eject Hole.
14
Symptom
Cause/Remedy
An error occurs when
writing data.
t If the writing speed is set very low, change to a higher
speed. Depending on the disc media being used, faster
writing speeds may work best. Changing the writing speed
is done by the writing software. If the PC has a slow CPU,
the writing speed may also have to be slow.
t Disable the PC’s screen saver. If the screen saver activates
while writing data, the data transfer may become too slow,
resulting in data writing errors.
t Close all programs except the writing software.
t Close any resident hard disk utilities and disk speed-up
utilities.
t In some cases, file fragmentation on the hard disk can
cause problems. Defrag the hard disk with the Windows
defrag program found under Accessories - System Tools or
another suitable program.
A problem occurs when the
PC boots, or the writing
software does not operate
properly.
t If the writing software supplied with the CRX160E is
installed on a PC that already has a packet-writing software
such as CDRFS, the software may not operate correctly.
Try uninstalling the other program before installing the
supplied software. Note that some PCs may come with
CDRFS preinstalled.
A writing software other
than that supplied with the
drive is installed, but does
not work.
t The writing software may be incompatible with the
CRX160E. Please contact the supplier of the writing
software.
t The installed version of the writing software may be
incompatible with the CRX160E. Please contact the
supplier of the writing software.
You may be able to upgrade the writing software to be
compatible with the CRX160E.
Problems arise after having
operated normally for a
while.
t If operation becomes unstable after installing a program,
uninstall it and try again. If the symptoms are eliminated,
avoid installing and using the new program.
15
Precautions for
Use
Handling Discs
• Handle discs only by the edges. Never
touch the recording surface.
Operation and Storage
Conditions
Avoid using or storing the drive in a
hot or humid location, or where it
might be subject to severe vibration or
direct sunlight.
Shipping
• Please repack the drive in its original
carton when shipping by itself.
• If the drive is to be shipped while
installed in a PC, remove any disc
beforehand.
Avoiding Condensation
Problems
As much as possible, avoid sudden
temperature changes. Do not attempt to
use the drive immediately after moving
it from a cold to a warm location, or
raising the room temperature suddenly,
as condensation may form within the
drive. If the temperature changes
suddenly while using the drive, stop
using it but keep the power on for at
least an hour.
16
• Do not write on discs (except with a
felt-tip marker), or paste labels on
them.
• Do not store discs in dusty, dirty or
humid locations, in direct sunlight, or
near heat-generating devices.
• Avoid spilling liquid on discs.
• To protect important data, always
keep discs in their protective cases.
Cleaning
Cabinet
Wipe dirt from the cabinet with a soft
dry cloth. For heavy dirt, wipe with a
cloth moistened with synthetic
detergent. Do not use thinner, benzene
or alcohol, which could damage the
surface finish.
Disc Cleaning
Precautions
• Do not wipe CD-R or CD-RW discs
to clean them before recording data.
Instead, use a blower to remove any
dust.
• Data may not record properly if a
scratch or dust is present on the
unrecorded area of a CD-R or CDRW disc. Use special care when
handling.
Discs
Wipe dirt from discs using a soft cloth,
from the centre of the disc toward the
outside.
For heavy dirt, moisten a soft cloth
with water and wring it out before
wiping, then remove the moisture with
a dry cloth.
Do not use benzene, vinyl record
cleaner or antistatic solutions which
could cause scratches on the disc.
