Rolling Chain (1D50.70)

Rolling Chain (1D50.70)
Location: 68-4C
Concept: Central Forces
Procedure/Explanation: A small chain is place on the rim of a wooden disc that is mounted to a
motor. The motor is turned on and while the disc is turning a small, forked piece of plastic is
used to quickly push the chain off of the disc. When the chain is released from the disc, it rolls
across the table retaining its shape for a second or two.
Note: for added interest you can have the rolling chain roll into an obstacle that will cause
it to “jump” into the air, holding much of its shape while in flight.
