Recording Interviews and Conferences Options
Please see the scenarios below about the equipment you need to purchase depending on your
requirements.
Scenario 1
To use a Southern Health encrypted laptop for recording interviews you will need the following:
• Encrypted laptop
• 1 x external microphone – Philips Boundary layer microphone (with audio connection)
• Speech exec software – to record and save voice recordings on the laptop.
As the voice files will be transcribed you will then need to purchase:
1 x Philips transcriber foot pedal (for playback speed control) LFH2000 series
1 x Philips audio headphones (there is a choice of 3 different types, see below )
Choice of headphones
Philips Boundary Layer microphone – these can be linked together to create a daisy of mics.
1 x Speech exec software installed on the PC of the transcriber. The dictaphones (scenario 2) will be
purchased with speech exec licensed software but one of these licenses could be used for the
transcriber the likelihood is, the interviewers will not need to use the licenses for this particular research
project so you can cost save here.
OR You could purchase a complete Philips transcription set LFH7 177 - see below.
Scenario 2
To use an encrypted dictaphone for recording interviews you will need to purchase:
1 x Philips digital Pocket dictaphone 9600 with speech exec software (included with dictaphone will be a
power cable, SD card, rechargeable AAA batteries, docking station, USB cable, and built in microphone
but the microphone may not be sufficient)
1 x external microphone(optional) – Philips Boundary layer microphone 9172 (with audio connection).
For the transcriber, in addition to the above (scenario 1) the Transcriber will need to borrow one of the
Dictaphone docking stations.
Scenario 3
To record group interviews you will need to assess and purchase additional Philips Boundary layer
microphones or you run the risk of not picking up all voices, dependent on their position in the room. As
a rough guidance, each boundary layer mic should cover up to 6 – 8 people provided they are not
positioned too far away from it.
Scenario 4
If your requirement is not urgent then as part of the Digital Dictation project the personal
correspondence module is being purchased for Winscribe. This will enable you to store your dictation
files on the Southern Health system it may also allow you to combine with Digital Dictation devices used.
This is anticipated to be ready in the New Year.
Next steps
1. Get quote for equipment - Contact ICT Procurement, Therese Zanetti, HITS on T: 023 80383994
(Southampton, New Forest and North Hampshire). Fareham, Gosport and East Hampshire –
IPHIS IT Procurement Team - 02392 682680
2. Assess and make a decision re your interviewer’s requirements for recording devices; encrypted
laptops/encrypted digital pocket Dictaphones + accessories (think to future requirements re
research projects). The equipment above will become part of a Trust standard. I have also had
a discussion with the digital Dictation Project.
3. Order through ICT Procurement
4. Log a service call with HITS and IPHIS re install of software and encryption set up when
equipment received.
You will need to ensure both procurement and HITS understand the urgency of your timescale.
