Solution
Explain what happens in
this step
Pretend you are the engineer working on the scenario
above.
Figure out something that needs
a solution. This can be related to
an everyday issue or to
something that needs solving.
Develop multiple ideas that
would aid in solving the problem
and meet the requirements of the
criteria. May need to do
research in order to better
generate ideas.
The Mall of America is no longer the largest mall in America which
has reduced the number of visitors traveling to MN.
Pick one solution that you are
going to go ahead with.
Create a model, prototype,
design an experiment, or carry
out your solution.
Test the model, prototype or
solution in order to see how
effective it is. Record two kinds
of data in this step, qualitative
and quantitative.
Examine the evidence and form
some conclusions. Asking
yourself questions in this step is
beneficial.
Study all test data and evaluate
design solutions; use quantitative
and qualitative data to make
needed changes for
refining/improving design
Create a new model, prototype,
experiment or carry out your
solution with your re-design or
modify the original.
Carry out the same test as before
in order to see if the redesign
was more effective in solving the
problem.
Ask yourself the same set of
questions in order to see if the
redesign was effective in solving
the problem and if it did more so
than the original design.
Letting others know that your
solution to the problem is worthy
of further steps (manufacturing,
implementation, etc).
The Mall of America Executive Board members met with
architectural and engineering companies, the MN board of travel
and tourism, as well as the businesses surrounding the MOA to
discuss possible solution to increase the size of the mall. The
solutions included:
• adding a water park
• adding a golf course
• attaching three hotels to the current building
• additional restaurants
It was decided that the plan would be to add one large hotel with
an indoor water park and three restaurants to the current building.
A model of the new mall was made and was presented on all the
major news stations with a link to a survey residents could fill out.
MN residents were asked to fill out the survey expressing their
opinions of the new MOA design.
After reviewing the results from the survey, it was decided that the
residents wanted additional restaurants as well as a larger water
park to accommodate the growing number of visitors.
The new plan included the current design with the addition of the
larger water park and 6 additional restaurants.
A new model was created to include the additional requests.
The new model was built and presented on all the major news
stations with a link to the same survey residents could fill out
prior.
The people of MN liked the new changes and no new
recommnedations were made. The plan was approved by the
MOA Executive Board.
A large dinner function was held at the MOA where they unveiled
the new building design.
List out three criteria from the scenario above:
1. Largest mall
2. Use existing building
3. Increase tourism
List out three constraints from the scenario above:
1. time
2. funding
3. land
4. weather
List out three possible errors from the scenario above:
1. Engineers miscalculated available land
2. Model was not made to scale
3. Builders used the wrong materials when adding on to the foundation
