August / September 2016
COMMANDER CORNER
Fellow Legionnaires & Members of Post 91,
I would like to thank everyone that Volunteered and Helped out with the Fourth of July Fireworks event
at the Post and the 3rd Annual Commanders Cup Softball Game. The Fourth of July raised funds directly
for the Post. The Softball Game with VFW Post 3345 raised money for WAGS4WARRIORS.
At this time, we are almost halfway to placing another Memorial Brick order. A minimum order of 20
bricks are required to place order. Please consider purchasing a brick for yourself or a loved one for $40.
Forms are available from the bartenders.
I want to Thank Don “Flash” Vaji for all of his tireless efforts with the Gifts for The Yanks Program. Once
again, Post 91 raised the top donations in the State of Ohio, with the help from our members. So Thank
you to all!!
My goal this year is to have all four of our Post units working together as “One Post”, a team. By
supporting each other, we can accomplish great things together. Many hands make light work for all!
All 4 units support thes various Veteran projects and give back to our communities with their time and
proceeds from functions, raffles and fundraisers. We need YOU, the members to continue supporting
our efforts. Please ask what you can do to help YOUR POST!! Many Volunteer opportunities are available
and we are always looking for new volunteers.
Upcoming events include the Ladies Aux Pajama Walk Aug 5, Masie Scholarship Golf Outing Aug 13 and
Family Picnic Aug 21. We have the Post 91 Birthday Sept 5th, the A.L.R. Pig Roast Sept 10, Patriots Day
Sept 11th, & POW/MIA Day Sept 16 & Pancake Breakfast Sept 25. I look forward to seeing you there!
Mark your calendar for the Post Clam Bake on Oct 15.
Please remember that the Pavilion is on a first come first serve basis, and someone must remain present
to hold it. Please take advantage of our great facility and scenic view. Always remember to be courteous
to other members when using the facilities, and leave the pavilion cleaner than you found it.
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their summer, God Bless Our Troops!! And Always Remember to Thank
a Veteran!!
Go Tribe! Go Buckeyes!
For God and Country,
Jeff Myers

Enlisted Women Nearing First Submarine Patrol
The first enlisted women to serve aboard a Navy
submarine have arrived and are preparing to sail on
the USS Michigan.
The Ohio-class guided-missile sub is wrapping up
a major maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval
Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
Among other work, living quarters were installed for
up to three female chief petty officers and 36 crew
members. The project reached a milestone Friday
when the boat, which arrived in August, left dry dock
and tied up at a pier.
The Navy in June 2015 announced the names of four
chief petty officers and 34 lower-ranked sailors who
were selected for USS Michigan gold and blue crews.
They were chosen from 113 applicants. The two crews
are comprised of 15 officers and about 140 enlisted
sailors each.
Female officers -- three per crew -- have served aboard some Ohio-class subs, including the Michigan,
since as early as 2011, but no structural changes were needed for them. That’s far from the case with
female enlisted living quarters.
The shipyard, USS Michigan builder Electric Boat and the ship’s crew enlarged the forward washroom,
added four showers by converting a bunkroom into shower space, split the aft washroom to allow for a
shower and head combination and a watchstander head, and created a new bunkroom from the old crew’s
study, the Navy said.
The two or three chiefs will share a living space and washroom. The others will split into nine-person bunk
rooms and share a head.
The Navy estimated the cost of the reconfiguration at about $6 million.
Melissa Kittrell, the project’s work integration manager, said in a Navy release that it was exciting to watch
history unfold before her.
“The very first female enlisted sailors have reported for duty during this (major maintenance period),”
she said. “As a former enlisted sailor, I am so excited to be part of this alteration and drive the work to
completion.”
The enlisted women have been preparing for nearly a year. They went through Basic Enlisted Submarine
School in Groton, Connecticut, as early as last August. Many had to change rates, which required retraining
for their new jobs.
Seven Ohio-class subs will add about 550 enlisted women by 2020, comprising 20 percent of crews. Ten of
the 18 Ohio-class boats are based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The USS Ohio will be the next Bangor sub
to convert.
This is the second major transformation for the USS Michigan. It was originally built to patrol with ballistic
missiles. In the mid-2000s, it was modified to carry conventionally armed cruise missiles.
Creating a female living area was only a fraction of the work performed on the Michigan. Crews also
repaired the sub’s sail, superstructure, engineering spaces and missile compartments.

Don Keller, Post 91 Honor Guard
Well, it’s been 3+ years now since the Albert E. Beasel Honor Guard’s beginnings, and I have to say that
where we are is rewarding. We may be small but we are committed. We are looking for well and able
bodies to become a part of this unit. That means Color Guard as well! So, if there are any SAL’s or LAUX
that want to be a part of Post 91’s Honor/Color Guard, please let me know through the Post channels.
Combining the LAUX with the Honor Guard for the 4th of July Parade turned out very well. Thank you
LAUX!
We want to welcome the Olmsted Falls American Legion to Post 91. Your participation with our Honor/
Color Guard is welcomed. We will have training available in order to implement a professional unit, and
do as many details as possible. Participating in the Honor Guard has been rewarding and sacrificial.
Veterans and volunteers know this. We also had the privilege to participate in the Brook Park Post 610,
and American Legion Theodore Roosevelt Post 469’s funerals and special events. Come be a part of an
Honorable unit.

Sharon (Sheri) Krepelka, Ladies Auxiliary President
I would like to thank the three ladies who marched in the Grindstone parade. We marched with the men’s
honor guard. I learned a lot from Don Keller who was calling cadence. Thank you Don.
I would like to also thank Vickie and her crew who cooked and sold food the 4th of July. Sorry I could not
be there. I understand that they were very busy. Good Job team.
Then there were 3 auxiliary members who became the queens of clean. On Saturday the 9th we tackled our
closet. Thank you Nancy and Stacy. There is still a lot to do but I have no doubt that we can get it done.
Our Family Picnic is on August 21st and I am in charge of the kid’s games. I will be in need of judges for
the games. Approach me at the picnic and I will put you to work.
Once again Gold Bless our post and its members. God Bless our troops home and overseas. God Bless

goal, I’m pleased to report we reached 379 members, which is where we finished in 2015. Thank you! In
August we will start processing 2017 dues. Thank you to the very early birds who have already paid their
2017 dues prior to August! You do not need your dues renewal notice to pay. Dues remain $25.00 for
seniors (18 years of age and older) and $5.00 for Juniors (under 18 years of age). Our new goal for 2017
is 3 above our final number on July 31, 2016. Hopefully that is a little more attainable.

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS
Edward Leopold, A.L.R. Director
Hi everyone,
Well here it is August already. WOW! How time flies by. We have had a great summer, some nice rides
and our first Poker Run benefiting Gift For The Yanks. For a first time event, this was very successful.
We will be giving Flash a check at our July meeting. Thank you to all who helped and made it a success!
There is not much happening in August, but watch for emails about our ride schedule. August 13 is the
Rittman Run & balloon launch at Rittman Cemetery. This is fun to participate in and a nice ride.
September 10 will be Our Annual Pig Roast. This event is always a fun time, so keep the date open.
Watch for the flyers around the post with all the information. We can always use help working the
pig roast or donations for our basket raffles. This is our one major yearly function, please think about
supporting it by attending, donating something for the baskets &/or helping with the event.
Till next time, Keep the rubber on the road, Thank a Vet,
Big Ed

FROM THE EDITOR
Maureen Bauhof, Editor
I have been a member of Post 91 for since 1991, I started attending events as a guest before I became
a member. I have attended events sponsored by the different Units not just those sponsored by the
Ladies Auxiliary. I support the Post in different ways, some with donated time, some with purchasing
raffle tickets and others by attending an event. I realize that we can’t attend all events but we should
support the Post be attending some events, not just those sponsored by our member unit.
I am proud to be a member of Post 91 and appreciate how they give back to the community. They offer
educational scholarships, help needy families during the holidays, spend time with the Veterans at the
VA as well as their donations to the various community & Veteran organizations. On July 18, the Post
91 Veterans and A.L.R. Riders escorted the American Veteran’s Traveling Tribute Vietnam Memorial Wall
from Medina to Middleburg Hts.
I want to expand upon the Commanders goal for the year and the S.A.L. Chaplin’s Member Feedback
Survey.
The successful Legions work hand in hand with their units, supporting each other on events and
fundraising.
The survey is tool to help the S.A.L. find out what they can do to increase member attendance at
meetings, suggestions on events and programs that will increase member participation & attendance,
suggestions on ways to involve more members to donate their time on projects and suggestions on
increasing membership. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey and return it to the canteen or
email it to jeromekelly68@gmail.com. The survey can be filled out by all Post members, check off your
unit membership. The survey will be shared with the Blue Caps, Ladies Auxiliary and the Riders.
Post Looking for Graphic Designer
Jim Masie, Graphic Designer
Effective January 2016, I will be stepping down as Post 91’s Graphic Designer. It has been a pleasure
providing my talents to the Post and proud of what we’ve achieved over the years; providing a invaluable
news source to our members while winning numerous awards for both our newsletter and website.
In lieu of my departure; we are looking for a suitable replacement to handle design duties for our
newsletter and act as a webmaster for the Post’s website. This person should be familiar with Graphic
Design along with the ability to use Adobe InDesign and maintain a website using a Content Management
System (WordPress).
The newsletter is distributed 6 times per year and will require updates each issue. We will provide the
newsletter template, along with associated assets (logos, fonts, etc.). The website receives changes as
directed by the Post 91 officers. Training is available and all login information will be provided.
If you are interested (or have any questions) please contact me at jimmasie@gmail.com, Maureen Bauhof
at 440-478-6387 (or maureenbauhof@gmail.com), or Commander Jeff Myers.
