Programme for international students
Faculty of Social Sciences
Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm
Contact: Prof. Dr. Horst Unbehaun (horst.unbehaun@th-nuernberg.de)
In order to support international students and to facilitate the selection of the classes
offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, we have developed a 30 ECTS programme in
English.
The programme will give students knowledge about the theory and practice of social work in
Germany and encourages them to relate this understanding to developments in their own
countries. The programme includes various classes taught in English, a 6 week placement in
a social work institution or service, and project work. It begins twice a year (October and
mid-March) and lasts for six months. It consists of five modules, designed to give
international students an understanding of social work as it is practiced in the Germany. In
order to offer international students a variety of courses, students are able to choose within
the particular modules. This enables students to enhance personal and professional
interests.
1.
Interdisciplinary module (4 ECTS)
Selected problems in social work
2.
Electives in general sciences (6 ECTS)
Students can choose 3 subjects (2ECTS each), e.g.
- Issues and methods in social work
- Story telling as method of social work
- Research workshop on qualitative social research
... and much more
or alternatively
3.
Cross sectional key competences (6 ECTS each module)
- International social work
- Cultural Diversity
4.
6-week internship (10 ECTS)
Students are able to undertake a work placement in a social work institution. The
institutions have (at least) one English speaking tutor who offers students support and
guidance throughout the internship. Further, a tutor from the university (usually a professor
of the department) will meet with the student to discuss and reflect on the placement and
on intercultural experience. He or she also provides help in case difficulties occur. Students
do not undertake the work experience full-time for six weeks, but rather once a week.
5.
Project work (10 ECTS)
Students subsequently choose a project or research work according to their own interests.
A tutor from the Faculty supervises this work to ensure consistent mentoring.
