Anti-Hazing Compliance
Marist College prohibits conduct by an individual, organization or group affiliated with the College that is in violation of the New
York State Law on Hazing, or any hazing activity which threatens a person’s rights or self-respect, which disrupts community life, or
which encourages the violation of civil, state or federal law, or Marist College Code of Student Conduct. Hazing is a demeaning and
dangerous practice that has no legitimate purpose. Marist College considers the following behaviors and activities to constitute
hazing that may lead to group and/or individual disciplinary action:
Hazing in any form, including emotional, physical, and psychological is prohibited. Chapters are to be hazing-free at all times. If a
member, alumni, or any student, faculty or administrative official has to ask if an event or activity qualifies as hazing, then it probably
does. Hazing is also illegal in almost every state and can result in incarceration and fines.
It is the responsibility of all student organizations to encourage an atmosphere of learning, social responsibility, and respect for human
dignity and to provide positive influence and constructive development for members and aspiring members.
Organizations are expected to utilize sound judgment to determine the abilities of individual students as they relate to organizational
activities and requirements. "Hazing" is an unproductive and hazardous custom that is incongruous with this responsibility and has no
place in our university life, either on or off campus.
Hazing activities are defined as any action taken or situation created by an active member, inactive member, alumnus member, or new
member, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule.
Such activities may include, but are not limited to the following:
















Use of alcohol or illegal drugs;
Paddling in any form;
Creation of excessive fatigue or physical exercise;
Sleep deprivation;
Conducting activities that do not allow adequate time for study;
Forcing, requiring or endorsing consumption of liquid or solid objects, edible or non-edible;
Physical or psychological shocks;
Endangerment or activities that have the potential to endanger a new member;
Quests, kidnapping treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or other such activities carried on outside or inside the confines
of the chapter facility;
Wearing or public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste;
Required carrying or wearing of any item not normally needed (e.g.: rocks, hospital bracelets, helmets, tattoos, etc.);
Personal servitude/running errands;
Engaging in public stunts and buffoonery;
Verbal harassment including yelling and screaming at new members/phrases that imply superior status;
Silence or not speaking to certain people;
Burning, branding, or tattooing any part of the body, or any other activity, whether voluntary or involuntary, which may
cause physical injury or endanger the life of the person being hazed.

Require new members to carry ideas or participate in house cleaning duties.


Nudity, morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and
Any activity that is not consistent with fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the University.
It should be noted that hazing is considered a criminal offense in the state of New York.
This definition extends to and prohibits the same activities both on campus and off campus, including activities taking place at or on
privately owned facilities and property.
Hazing is typically associated with membership selection and initiation into an organization. It is possible for hazing to occur before,
during, and after membership selection into an organization. Marist College will investigate all hazing allegations. Individuals and
organizations found in violation of the Marist College Hazing Policy will be sanctioned. Your National Office will be informed and if
needed the proper law enforcement agency may be notified. If you believe you or someone you know has been a victim of hazing,
contact the Office of Student Conduct, Assistant Dean of Students, or any other campus faculty or staff.
By signing this statement, I agree that I have read and understand the Marist College Anti-Hazing Policy. I agree to comply
with this policy, local and state laws, polices of my fraternal organization, and national governing council to which my
organization belongs.
