Art 504 PAINTING III, Spring 2014 TTH, 3:30-6:10 School of Art, Room 514 Eva Struble, Office 517B hours Wed 10-12am Eva.Struble@gmail.com GTA: Kurosh Yahyai: kuroshyahyai@gmail.com Pre-req: Art 404 twice ·Expected Learning Outcomes: -Implement tools and techniques of painting with a variety of media -Learn professionalism in your field through repeated written artists’ statements, become familiar with a wide variety of contemporary artists and their material and conceptual practices -Integrate and deepen knowledge of digital media in relation to painting including digital documentation of work and website basics, explore online multimedia platforms such as interactive museum sites in relation to museum field trips, and become familiar with online platforms through contributing to course documents -Compare and discuss paintings with frequent short slide presentations that provide a breadth of work on a given theme -Critique our own work, and write a short review of a local gallery or museum show depict a still life, self portrait, interior and exterior landscape, and the model through techniques learned -Solve problems of representation through a demonstrated understanding of color -Use links provided on Blackboard to review images from class, watch interviews with artists, and listen to audio segments of interest ·Grading 20 Use of tools and technique 30 Work performance in class –attentiveness, general attitude toward class:, energy and positive attitude about your work and others’ work Receptiveness, progress, productivity, timely completion, 10 Participation in discussion/critique 20 Work outside of class- students are expected to spend as much time working outside of class as in class. Most are available at the Blick student store -Book: “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger- can be found online or in the library -One piece of stiff foamboard/foamcore 20”x30” or larger -Pushpins for pin-up board - Itoya art portfolio, 8”x10” or larger -Surfaces for painting: gessoed wood panels or gessoed canvas surfaces are acceptable. No student grade canvas panels. -3 canvases or panels 16”x20” -1 canvas or panels 30”x40” or larger -2 more canvases or panels of your choice (larger than 18”x24”) -Acrylic, oil, gouache, or watercolor or other paint -A wide variety of brushes- bristle and sable or sable-like natural hair brushes -White cotton rags, baby oil (for cleaning brushes of oil paint), Gamsol (not turnpentine or paint thinner) for oil, empty containers (non-food) -Sharpie/tape to label jars · Attendance Being on time, and coming to every class is important to your performance throughout the semester. Absences lower your grade. If you have to miss a class, talk to me ahead of time, before or after class. If you are sick, I need a doctor’s note. Be in class for the full period from beginning to end. · Withdrawal After three absences, students will not receive a passing grade in this class. · Incompletes I do not give incompletes · Extra Credit You can receive extra credit for attending any opening or art exhibit (listed on this syllabus or otherwise) and writing a one-page response/review. You can also receive extra credit for a painting relating to Water: common experience, submitted by the submission due date in February to the School of Art exhibit, running March 14 –March 28, 2014, University Art Gallery. Cash award for Best of Show and two honorable mentions will also be offered. 1/23 In Class: Introduction, material and syllabus review, and daily sketchbook assignment. Names on storage racks.
