CLASS PARTICIPATION & ATTENDANCE Students are expected to come to class prepared and willing to participate in all classroom activities. A maximum of four (4) absences or tardiness are allowed without affecting your grade. Each further absence will lower your final grade by 5 points of your final grade percentage. It is your responsibility to contact the instructor of your absences. Be reminded that three instances of tardiness (15 minutes) will constitute one absence. 2 F. HOMEWORK & READINGS You will be given a regular homework to reinforce previous lessons discussed. As a general rule ‘no make-up work’ and ‘no late homework’ will be accepted, including quizzes. You are also expected to do cooperative-group activities in this class and be responsible for whatever was taken up in class during your absence. Attendance can significantly hamper your class participation as well as your pace of learning in this course. You will be given assigned short readings with comprehension questions and are due for submission (not emailed) on dates indicated. G. EXTRA CREDIT A maximum of two (2) extra credits are allowed. Please note that extra credits are “optional” and are, therefore, left to your discretion. Activities that apply to extra credits are subject to the instructor’s approval. For each extra credit, five (5) points will be added to the percentage score of your lowest quiz. H. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Movie Reflection Paper [Due: 12 March] You will have a chance to view a Filipino movie with English subtitle. This activity will allow you to hear dialogues spoken in Filipino and expose you to some Filipino cultural values as reflected in the movie. You are required to write a two-page in English, double-spaced reflection paper about the movie. Some points to consider in your reflection are: How does the movie relate to you as a Fil-Am or as a non Fil-Am with regards to the values and traditions the movie conveys? How are you able to gain a better understanding of the Filipino culture, traditions, and values? Are you able to relate to some of the characters or situations in the movie as someone with a distinct culture of your own? If you are a Filipino born and raised in the U.S., is this movie able to provide you with a better understanding of your Filipino heritage? How similar or different? 2. Culture Project Presentation & Oral Exams [Week 14 & 15] Your individual culture project requires research work. You will choose a Philippine Myth/Legend that you will develop into some kind of artistic “story book” with complete pictures/illustrations. Part of your task is to translate the Phil. Myth/Legend in Filipino. Also, the last page of your “story book” should include the answers to the following questions in Filipino: a). What’s the main idea of the myth/legend? b). What lessons can you learn from this myth/legend? c). What (Filipino) cultural values/insights can be gleaned from this myth/legend? 3 To assess your understanding, you will orally discuss your myth/legend with your instructor. You should be able to answer the questions posed by your instructor and discuss your ideas in the target language (Filipino). 3. Final Written Exam [Monday, 12 May 2014 - 8:00-10:00am - P-147] A Written Final Exam culminates the end of the semester. Selected chapters will be assigned for you to study. It is geared towards assessing how much you have learned in this class. I. WEIGHTED GRADING BREAKDOWN Your final grade will be based on the following: Movie Reflection Homework & Readings Quizzes Project Presentation & Oral Exam Final Written Exam Total: 10% 20% 20% 25% 25% 100% J.
