Anthropology Collection Assessment
Houston Cole Library
Submitted by Linda Louise Cain
May 2010
Introduction
Based on the guidelines provided by the OCLC/WLN Collection Assessment Service,
which provides a framework within which to evaluate a Library’s current holdings and
the level of activity which the collection is being developed, the Anthropology collection
is rated and overall 3bP, Intermediate or Instructional Support Level. The increase
since the last assessment can be attributed to the availability of, and access to journals
in the discipline.
Holdings
The Anthropology collection contains 3,495 titles and 129 e-book titles classified in
GN-GT. A complete list of e-book titles can be found in appendix III. This total reflects
an 11% increase in the collection since the last assessment. Further, patrons have
unmediated access to over nine million volumes through universal borrowing
agreements with other libraries. The number of titles for each subclass is listed below:

through the aggregator databases, e-book collections, appropriate websites,
documents, and e-journals accessible to the JSU community is available through the
Library’s e-resource management tool, Serials Solutions and e-journal index found on
the Library’s Homepage.
Subject specialist librarians also review and recommend World Wide Web sites for
inclusion in the catalog.

Supplemental Support
The Anthropology collection is supported by related subject collections: Geography,
Biology, Sociology, Archaeology, and General Works.
Summary
Total holdings, conspectus evaluations and quantitative and qualitative comparisons
indicate that the Anthropology collection is adequate to support courses for a minor in
Anthropology or a Geoarchaeology Concentration for the Geography major is in
Physical and Earth Sciences. This collection also supports courses for the minor in
Family and Consumer Sciences and Drama.
Strengths:
The Anthropology collection has developed significantly since the last assessment.
Expenditures for books and serials in Geography and Anthropology for the years 2004
-2009 is $96,166.06. The periodicals available electronically have shown a huge
increase. The quality of the periodicals has been verified by the high percentage (85%)
of titles held when compared to Magazines for Libraries.
Weaknesses:
The Audiovisual collection is very small but was weeded since the last assessment.
Recommendations:
The growth rate of the Anthropology collection should be enhanced to maintain
support for the minor in Anthropology. The book collection could be generally
increased. The periodical collection is substantial and should be maintained. The AV
holdings should be judiciously expanded.
